Markus Pierson 'AMERICAN COYOTE IN PARIS NO. 33'
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: American Coyote in Paris No. 33Medium: Photolitho on PaperOrientation: verticalImage Size: 4.75 x 9.25 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 14.5 inchesEdition Size: 195: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. * * While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. * * The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. * * Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. * * In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life's ups and downs. He has had nearly one hundred solo exhibitions in galleries across America, Australia and New Zealand, while also being featured at various prestigious international fairs including Art Miami, Artexpo New York, Sofa Chicago, Chicago Contemporary & Classic, and palmbeach3. Markus has amassed a collector base which includes Heads of State, major corporations and celebrities worldwide. * * Markus' wife and muse is artist, Sheryl Pierson. The two live and work in a converted loft in Kansas City, Missouri. * * "There's no doubt in my mind that my success has more to do with luck than talent, more to do with stubbornness than vision, more to do with ignorance than insight, but the fact remains that I pursued my dream and attained it against staggering odds. I say this now to anyone who will listen: even if I had failed, it would have been worth it. Better to face a brutal truth than to grow old wondering what might have been. " Markus Pierson *

At The Moulin Rouge 22x17 1/2 Limited Giclee
Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri de (1864-1901). Many immortal painters lived and worked in Paris during the late 19th century. They included Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec observed and captured in his art the Parisian nightlife of the period. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on Nov. 24, 1864, in Albi, France. He was an aristocrat, the son and heir of Comte Alphonse-Charles de Toulouse and last in line of a family that dated back a thousand years. Henri's father was rich, handsome, and eccentric. His mother was overly devoted to her only living child. Henri was weak and often sick. By the time he was 10 he had begun to draw and paint. At 12 young Toulouse-Lautrec broke his left leg and at 14 his right leg. The bones failed to heal properly, and his legs stopped growing. He reached young adulthood with a body trunk of normal size but with abnormally short legs. He was only 1.5 meters tall. Deprived of the kind of life that a normal body would have permitted, Toulouse-Lautrec lived wholly for his art. He stayed in the Montmartre section of Paris, the center of the cabaret entertainment and bohemian life that he loved to paint. Circuses, dance halls and nightclubs, racetracks--all these spectacles were set down on canvas or made into lithographs. Toulouse-Lautrec was very much a part of all this activity. He would sit at a crowded nightclub table, laughing and drinking, and at the same time he would make swift sketches. The next morning in his studio he would expand the sketches into bright-colored paintings. In order to become a part of the Montmartre life--as well as to protect himself against the crowd's ridicule of his appearance--Toulouse-Lautrec began to drink heavily. In the 1890s the drinking started to affect his health. He was confined to a sanatorium and to his mother's care at home, but he could not stay away from alcohol. Toulouse-Lautrec died on Sept. 9, 1901, at the family chateau of Malrome. Since then his paintings and posters--particularly the Moulin Rouge group--have been in great demand and bring high prices at auctions and art sales.

Woodland by Schofield Oil 24x18
Michael Schofield The landscapes of Michael Schofield are justly prized and celebrated for the wealth of their fine detail, for the radiancy of their colors, and for the unfailing consonance of their diverse visual parts which enables those elements to form a harmonious visual whole. And his landscapes are not at all the same; Schofield has the ability to summon up the memories and images of different times and places, from years before and from miles and miles away, and recombine them on canvas with entirely new results. Indeed, though he has a characteristic elegance of style, his serigraphs are as distinct from one another as are the various natural beauties that inspire them. Schofield was born in Florida 1947, but his family moved to California that same year. He began to paint and study watercolor in high school. Like most teenage boys, he was at first much more interested in sports than in fine art, but his art teacher at Oakland High School recognized that Michael had an exceptional talent, and for nearly two years he tutored the youth privately. After a stint in the military, Schofield went to art school in Nashville, Tennessee. During the summers he would journey to Woodstock, New York, in order to study with watercolorist John Pike, an esteemed member of the National Academy of Art and the American Watercolor Society. Schofield soon opened his own art studio, where he painted and taught for more than a decade. He returned to California in 1980 to set up a silk-screen printing studio in order to be able to create his own original serigraphs. He wanted to be involved in every step of the intricate and exacting process of serigraph, from fabricating the stencils to adding the final finishing touches of color. Having been a successful artist for many years, Schofield has his works in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Bank of America, the Library of Congress, the Xerox Corporation, Occidental, and Twentieth Century, Inc. Schofield believes that the primary aspiration of art is to communicate a shared perception of beauty from one human heart to another, from the artist to the viewer of his art: I choose to create more traditional landscapes because they involved imagery most people can relate to, imagery that evokes a memory and therefore a feeling. I painting landscapes because they speak to everyone. In sharing a place I have known, I know that others will see places they have known. In that way, I can communicate with others without using a single word
Harlequin Series by Krasnyansky 24x16 S/N
Anatole Krasnyansky, 1930 - Anatole Krasnyansky, now residing in California, was a prominent architect and watercolorist when he left the U.S.S.R. for the United States in 1975, where he found fertile ground for his aesthetic growth. His traditional cityscapes, much admired in Europe, have grown richer, freer and more expressive; and in recent years he has evolved a second, wholly new style with which to render the experience and ideas of his new life in the United States. With a Master's Degree in architecture and fine art, he is well versed in every aspect of the structure and design of the buildings he depicts. Since his arrival in the U.S., the artist has found important uses for his knowledge of architecture, design and his creative imagination, and he has realized his tremendous potential and achieved virtuosity in several different artistic areas. Working as a scenic artist in television, motion pictures and the theatre, he has designed sets calling for his specialized background. Always a lover of the baroque, he incorporated the strength and fluid grace of that style into his figural compositions, capturing the sense of motion with which a building makes a line flow from one area to another.

Markus Pierson 'COYOTE PORTRAIT OF DEGAS' Canvas
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Coyote Portrait of DegasMedium: Canvas SerigraphOrientation: verticalImage Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesEdition Size: 175: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Excerpts from his book, But I Digress, A Coyote's View of Art History * * EDGAR DEGAS * * Edgar Degas is my brother Pat's favorite, and since he's my older brother, I have to toe the line and say Edgar's a stud. Not that I wouldn't anyway. * * I know why he likes him. Pat loves motion. Nobody captured motion better than Degas. Many were the times I can recall him approaching his snot-nosed runt little brother's basement studio and saying, "God, that music you like is repulsive. Turn it down. What could you find appealing in it? How can you draw with your ears on fire? I can't stand it in here. Ooooh – you've got nice motion there." And then he'd leave to immerse himself again in the classical music that I found utterly lacking. No lyrics! Got to have lyrics. But I digress. * * Some folks say Edgar is an Impressionist, others say no. I say he dabbled, he flirted. Remember what Impressionism is. They're all about light and color; subjects don't matter. Well, Edgar put huge importance on light, even more on color, but more than anything he was nuts about subject and composition. * * Lordy, that boy is good. Degas was a huge fan of Ingres. Ingres told young Edgar to learn to draw, draw like the wind, and darned if he didn't do just that. Degas is a draftsman's draftsman, a painter's painter, and a pasteler's pasteler. (Pasteler? That can't be right.) He played to the strengths of each medium he worked in. A brilliant technician, but beyond that nobody can touch Edgar when it comes to capturing spontaneous movement and its particular effect on light and shadow. A stud. Man alive, could he draw from memory. You'd swear he was working from snapshots. Nope. Cameras only took still pictures back then. I guess he could have said, "Now hold it," but that would have caused the dancers to get miffed or worse, get a bunion. All he had was a sketchbook and a quick hand. Wow. To this day I can't figure out how he could concentrate in those ballet studios with all that classical music blaring in his ears. He probably just did a quick pencil study and then ran back to his basement studio to crank some Zeppelin. * * Every profession has its own particular horror. Singers fear throat cancer, balloonists fear vertigo, a sommelier fears sinusitis, a politician fears a moral compass, painters fear blindness. Well, Edgar went blind. Not completely, but still . . . yikes! How ironic that someone who created such an expansive feast for the eyes would, in the end, find himself starved for sight. * Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant.

Dora Marr by Picasso Giclee on Canvas S/N
Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso was born in South Spain in Malaga. Malaga is a scenic city on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. His father, Don José Ruiz Blasco and mother, Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez lived modestly. His father was a painter and naturally, Pablo was exposed to art and the creation of it, very early on in life. The first ten years of Pablo's life was spent in Málaga. The family was poor, and when two other children were born Lola (Dolorès) in 1884 and Concepción (Conchita) in 1887 it put pressure on Don to find a higher paying position. When Don José was offered a better-paid job, he accepted it immediately, and the Picassos moved to the provincial capital of La Corua, Galicia and and he studied art with his father at the Fine Arts at La Corua. In 1900 he moved to Barcelona. At that time Barcelona was home to many intellectuals and artists. Picasso headed into what now is referred to as the "blue period" (1901-1904), marked by the blue tonalities in his paintings as he shuffled back and forth from Paris to Barcelona. In 1905 Picasso moved to Paris and met George Braque. His style also took on a new look. Pinks and Grays were some recognizable color scheme of this period now known as the "rose period". In 1907 Picasso painted "Les Demoiselles d' Avignon". This is considered to be one his most important works not only of his life but in 20th century art. In 1909 just before his introduction to the U.S. Pablo began to develop his cubism style in several of his works. Picasso had his first exhibition in the U.S. at Photo - Section Gallery in New York (1911). Soon after this Picasso began to work in college and in 1914 he went to Rome to work as a designer. He worked with Sergey Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. In 1915 Picasso met his wife, Olga, who was then a dancer. Olga Koklova became the subject of several of his paintings. The next 10 years of his life was spent designing theater sets and painting in Cubism, Classical, and Surrealism. From 1929 to 1931 he worked on a large quantity of graphic illustrations and he pioneered wrought iron sculpture with Julio Gonzalez, a good friend of his. In 1935 his daughter Maria Therese was borne. She later became the model for one of my all time favorite paintings "Girl Before the Mirror". In this painting a girl sees herself imperfectly and through Picassos use of color and his use of the reflected image, one can gain a look into the emotion of the "Girl Before the Mirror." If you have not sat and looked at this painting, you might want to consider doing so.a true masterpiece. In 1937 the world was becoming entangled by Nazi attacks. Picasso responded with his great anti-war painting "Guernica," a very powerful and disturbing portrayal of man. Death became a major subject in most of his work from 1939 to 1945. Francois Gilot became Picasso's liason during the 1940's. She borne him two children and she also appeared in many of his works from that time period. Jacqueline Roque, whom he met in 1953 and married in 1961 was his last companions to be portrayed in his art. Most of his time in the 50's was spent in southern France. He unveiled "Head of a Woman" for Chicago 's Civic Center in 1967. Towards the end of his life Picasso created 347 engravings with themes of the circus, bullfights, and love. He died April 8th in 1973. Picasso was one of the few artists to be appreciated and celebrated during his lifetime. He loved life and celebrated the beauty of it and he made a good living doing what he loved. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art. The painting depicts five naked prostitutes in a brothel; two of them push aside curtains around the space where the other women strike seductive and erotic poses-but their figures are composed of flat, splintered planes rather than rounded volumes, their eyes are lopsided or staring or asymmetrical, and the two women at the right have threatening masks for heads. The space, too, which should recede, comes forward in jagged shards, like broken glass. In the still life at the bottom, a piece of melon slices the air like a scythe. The faces of the figures at the right are influenced by African masks, which Picasso assumed had functioned as magical protectors against dangerous spirits: this work, he said later, was his "first exorcism painting." A specific danger he had in mind was life-threatening sexual disease, a source of considerable anxiety in Paris at the time; earlier sketches for the painting more clearly link sexual pleasure to mortality. In its brutal treatment of the body and its clashes of color and style (other sources for this work include ancient Iberian statuary and the work of Paul Cézanne), Les Demoiselles d'Avignon marks a radical break from traditional composition and perspective. With Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso offends the Paris art scene in 1907. Showing his eight-foot-square canvas to a group of painters, patrons, and art critics at his studio, Picasso meets with almost unanimous shock, distaste, and outrage. The painter Matisse is angered by the work, which he considers a hoax, an attempt to paint the fourth dimension. "It was the ugliness of the faces that froze with horror the half-converted," the critic Salmon writes later. The painter Derain comments wryly, "One day we shall find Pablo has hanged himself behind his great canvas." In the months leading up to the painting's creation, Picasso struggles with the subject -- five women in a brothel. He creates more than 100 sketches and preliminary paintings, wrestling with the problem of depicting three-dimensional space in a two -dimensional picture plane. The original composition includes two men -- a patron surrounded by the women, and a medical student holding a skull, perhaps symbolizing that "the wages of sin are death." In the final composition, the patron is gone and the medical student -- who has been called a stand-in for the painter himself -- has become a fifth woman with a primitive mask, holding back the crimson curtain to reveal her "sisters." The painting is described as a battleground, with the remains of the battle left on the canvas. The Iberian women in the center of the canvas clash with the hideously masked creatures standing and squatting on the right. In creating Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Picasso turns his back on middle-class society and the traditional values of the time, opting for the sexual freedom depicted in a brothel. He also rejects popular current movements in painting by choosing line drawing rather than the color- and light-defined forms of Impressionism and the Fauves. The painter's private demons take shape in the figures on the canvas. Picasso later calls Les Demoiselles d'Avignon "my first exorcism painting." He likens the act of painting to that of creating fetishes, or weapons: "If we give spirits a form, we become independent." The originality of Picasso's vision and execution in Les Demoiselles d'Avignon help plant the seeds for cubism, the widely acclaimed and revolutionary art movement that he and painter Georges Braque develop in years to come. After its initial showing, the painting remains largely unseen for 39 years. It is shown at the Galerie d'Antin in Paris in 1916, then lies rolled up in Picasso's studio until it is bought in the early 1920s by Jacques Doucet, sight unseen. It is reproduced in the publication La Revolution Surrealiste in 1925, but remains relatively unknown until 1937, when it is shown at the Petit Palais in Paris. The Museum of Modern Art in New York buys it soon afterwards, and in later years it becomes a prized part of the collection.

The Color Purple Original Movie Production Sign
This sign was made during the original production of the motion picture The Color Purple. * It was displayed at the production studio, and also at the premier. The sign is all wood, and hand-painted, with the famous logo, and image. The size itself really lets it stand out, at 48 x 71 inches. It stands out even more with the addition of another separate panel on the main panel, where the image is. The silhouetted figure on the rocker appears in dark purple, with a deep yellow background. Actual purple lace frames the scene, adding a touch of depth and realism. This panel measures 40 x 40 inches. * The sign is in very good condition overall. There are 10 small holes around the near the edges where it was affixed to a wall. There is some paint wear, mostly on the yellow surface, and one spot of lace wear. These are common features on a promotional item, and they don't take away from the wonderful impression this sign makes. This is a unique piece of movie history. Of course, The Color Purple was more than just a movie. It is a great American story, and like this sign it will be cherished for generations to come.*** This is large and heavy sign. Please contact us for a shipping quote, or to schedule a pick-up in our suburban Chicago warehouse. *

Summer Meadow by Schofield Oil 16x20
Markus Pierson 'Portrait of a Blue Coyote' Serigraph
Artist: Markus Pierson Title: Portrait of a Blue Coyote Medium: Serigraph on Paper Image Size: 22.5" x 45" Edition: 325 Signed and Numbered on Paper Certificate of Authenticity included Biography * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. * While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. * The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. * Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. * In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. * Markus' wife and muse is artist, Sheryl Pierson. The two live and work in a converted loft in Kansas City, Missouri. * "There's no doubt in my mind that my success has more to do with luck than talent, more to do with stubbornness than vision, more to do with ignorance than insight, but the fact remains that I pursued my dream and attained it against staggering odds. I say this now to anyone who will listen: even if I had failed, it would have been worth it. Better to face a brutal truth than to grow old wondering what might have been. " Markus Pierson *
Mackenzie Thorpe 'Love Cat' Serigraph
Artist: Mackenzie Thorpe Title: Love Cat Medium: Serigraph on Paper Image: 30" x 27" Paper: 36.5" x 33" Edition: 395 Arabic Biography * Internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s, where his father worked as a laborer and his mother as an auxiliary nurse. Mackenzie acknowledges mixed emotions about this period in his life. He remembers the strong feeling of community spirit, the warmth and humor that flourished in the face of adversity, as well as the loneliness and isolation. * The need and compulsion to draw was obvious from an early age and remains with Mackenzie today. As a child, he would seek out whatever raw materials he could find, drawing on cigarette packs with stubs of pencils, or using eye-shadow and lipstick illicitly obtained from his mum's makeup bag. Struggling with dyslexia throughout his childhood, Mackenzie found confidence in painting and drawing. Unsurprisingly, he left school without formal qualifications, taking on a variety of manual, unskilled jobs while continuing to draw and paint. Mackenzie eventually got the courage to enter the local art college. His lack of education and a barely readable application did nothing to warrant support, but the strength and volume of work that Mackenzie presented, coupled with his enthusiasm and commitment, won him a place at the Middlesbrough College of Art and, subsequently, the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. * After leaving art school, he spent several years working with inner-city children in London before moving to North Yorkshire to set up a studio and gallery with his wife, Susan, and children, Owen and Chloe. Since then, he has become one today's most collected and sought-after artists. His works express an entire range of human emotion, from the special bond of love and friendship, to the importance of self-reflection and individual triumphs. His works are a tribute to the creativity within us all and are a vivid expression of hope and the human spirit. * Mackenzie's perspective on life is clear. He doesn't hide the fact that often life is a struggle, a dark tunnel which can seem endless. However, he passionately believes that our frail dreams are worth nurturing and that love and honesty will triumph over adversity. *

Pipe Smoker by Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso1881 - 1973Pablo Picasso is unquestionably the most famous artist of the 20th Century. In his artistic life, lasting more than 75 years he created tens of thousands of works, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, original lithographs, etchings, linoleum cuts and ceramics. No single artist has had a greater influence on Modern Art and has changed art more profoundly in the 20th Century. Picasso has been described as having lived several lifetimes artistically. He created Cubism (with George Braque) and continued thereafter to develop his art with a velocity that is comparable to the pace and dramatic change of the 20th Century.Born in Malaga on October 25, 1881, Picasso received his first drawing lessons from his father, a drawing teacher, at La Coruna in 1891. In 1895 the family moved to Barcelona, where young Pablo brilliantly passed the entry examination to the famous La Llonga art school completing in a single day, the one-month qualifying exam. His father was so overwhelmed by his son's abilities that he gave him own brushes, and proclaimed that he would never paint again. In 1897 he exhibited drawings in a cafe called Els Quatre Gats the artistic center of Barcelona. In 1899 he met Jaime Sabartes and did his first etching El Zurdo. The following year saw Picasso in Paris for the first time, where he created and exhibited drawings. In 1901 he made drawings in Madrid and Paris and he started to sign his works 'Picasso,' his mother's maiden name. In 1904 he settled definitively in Paris, where he rented a studio in the "Bateau Lavoir." This is the period when he created his famous "Blue Period" works, so called because of their monochromatic tonality, and somber content. In 1907, Picasso created the painting that would in essence create "modern art." "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" is considered the watershed painting of modern art. Artists from all over the world made pilgrimages to see the work themselves. It led to Picasso's collaboration with Braque (lasting into the 1920's), which created Cubism. The 1920's were important years in the development of Picasso's art and his fame. He designed theater sets and painted in cubist, neo-classical, and surreal modes. In 1937, the fascists horrified the world with the bombing of the civilian town of Guernica, Spain. Picasso was deeply affected by the carnage and responded by creating his other most notable masterpiece mural, "Guernica."Picasso became one of the most important original printmakers of all time. He was never content to use any media in its purely traditional way, and he revolutionized many of the graphic media he employed. In 1905 he engraved Les Saltimbanques. In 1906 Picasso did drypoints on celluloid and his first woodcuts. From 1909 to 1915 he produced Cubist prints, and from 1916 to 1920 he did neoclassic etchings. 1919 was the year of his first lithographs; in 1927 he did etchings for Balzac's Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu and etchings for Ovid's Metamorphoses in 1930. In 1933 he started work on a set of one hundred copperplates for Vollard (the Vollard Series). In 1934 he did Lysistrata and in 1935 the Minotauromachy. In 1937 engraved Franco's Dream and Lie (also in response to Guernica), the sugar aquatints for Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, and the portraits of Vollard that concluded the famous hundred plate series.Picasso moved to lithography in November 1945, producing his first color works in that medium at the famous Mourlot atelier. In 1948 he did Gongora and Reverdy's Le Chant des Morts. In 1949 Picasso created the lithograph entitled The Dove of Peace; in 1950 the illustrations for Cesaire's Corps Perdui; in 1952 the aquatints, Woman at the Window. From 1953 to 1957 came his aquatints, line engravings and lithographs (the Jacqueline series), and in 1958 his first color linocuts. In 1959 he did the Tauromachy series and linocuts. From 1960 to 1967, he did aquatints, etchings, drypoints and line engravings. In 1968, from March 16 to October 5, three weeks before his 87th birthday, he did three hundred and forty-seven etchings, line engravings, drypoints, mezzotints and aquatints, known as the "347 Series." Picasso died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France at the age of 91.

Having achieved a commanding position as a painter in the tumultuous New York art scene of the late 1950s, Johns began to work in lithography at Tatyana Grosman's Universal Limited Art Editions in 1960. The resulting prints demonstrated for the first time in this medium the vitality of the new American art. For Johns, printmaking has continued to be an important part of his total creative output-as it was for such other major modern artists as Munch and Picasso. There is little question that he has contributed more, qualitatively, than any living artist to the printed form of art. * Castelman, "Jasper Johns: A Print Retrospective," The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1986. *

Harvard Oil Original Oil 25.5 x 21 1/2
Benoît Havard is a young Professional, a sanctimonious painter who asserts a beautiful personality and a big fulfilment in his work. His oil painting is of a big sensualism, a fluid, quite in shadows and lights. Not amazing that he takes itself of love for the lands of Africa, Morocco in particular, of which he made one of his subjects of preference. He also likes the watercolor, which he deals in a quite personal way, with coolness, vitality and authenticity.More recently, he expresses himself in the acrylic, on big sizes, marine in particular, in more and more strong colors, underlined by black ink and heightened by brilliant filler.Always representational artist, his painting delivers a place more and more opened to more abstract declensions.
Forest Snow By Schofield Oil 24X18

Myrtle Beach Golf by King 20x24 S/N
Mark King describes his approach to painting as ninety percent preparation. â?oIt takes a great deal of time for meâ?¦ but once I begin, I work with great impetus, with immense bursts of energy. It is not until the last ten or fifteen minutes before completion that I am able to see where the painting is going and to catch the mood of the moment.â?Born in Bombay, India to British parents in 1931, Mark Kingâ?Ts childhood was one of exotic experience and privileged education. After graduating from La Martiniére College in Calcutta, the sixteen-year-old King sailed to England to attend Bournemouth College of Art. There he studied painting, sculpture, architecture and theatre design. Subsequently, he spent seven years as the resident scenic designer at the Oxford Playhouse Theatre. In 1961, he decided to concentrate on painting, and he moved to Paris, where he studied at the Ã?cole des Beaux-Arts and the Louvre. It was there that he developed his impressionistic style, influenced by the wealth of examples of European masters.

He was inducted into both the comic book industry's Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1996. * In early 1939, DC's success with the seminal superhero Superman in Action Comics prompted editors to scramble for more such heroes. In response, Bob Kane conceived "the Bat-Man". Kane said his influences for the character included actor Douglas Fairbanks' movie portrayal of the swashbuckler Zorro, Leonardo Da Vinci's diagram of the ornithopter, a flying machine with huge bat-like wings; and the 1930 film The Bat Whispers, based on Mary Rinehart's mystery novel The Circular Staircase. In 1943, Kane left the Batman comic books to focus on penciling the daily Batman newspaper comic strip. DC Comics artists ghosting the comic-book stories now included Jack Burnley and Win Mortimer, with Robinson moving up as penciler and Fred Ray contributing some covers. After the strip finished in 1946, Kane returned to the comic books but, unknown to DC, had hired his own personal ghosts, including Lew Schwartz: Lew Schwartz interview, Alter Ego #51 (Aug. 2005) and Sheldon Moldoff from 1953-1967 * Information retrieved from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Kane *

Mackenzie Thorpe 'We Are Family' Serigraph
Artist: Mackenzie ThorpeTitle: We Are FamilyMedium: Serigraph on PaperImage: 29.5" x 24"Edition: 395 ArabicBiography * Internationally renowned artist Mackenzie Thorpe was raised in the industrial town of Middlesbrough in the 1950s, where his father worked as a laborer and his mother as an auxiliary nurse. Unsurprisingly, he left school without formal qualifications, taking on a variety of manual, unskilled jobs while continuing to draw and paint.Mackenzie eventually got the courage to enter the local art college. *

Autumn Afternoon By Schofield Oil 16x20
Markus Pierson 'COYOTE PORTRAIT OF MAGRITTE' Canvas
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Coyote Portrait of MagritteMedium: Canvas SerigraphOrientation: verticalImage Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesEdition Size: 175: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Excerpts from his book, But I Digress, A Coyote's View of Art History * * RENE MAGRITTE * * My deadline for the book approaching like the Starship Enterprise approaches Klingon territory at full warp drive with fresh dylithium crystals, I sit at my writer's desk, hopped up on antihistamines, buried in art books, and Magritte's biographer tells me, by way of written word, "Anti-Painting is equivalent to anti-art, or at the very least, to a reintegration of industrial production and its sociological effects into artistic endeavor." What? Excuse me, what? The guy is nuts! I've read that sentence fifty times – it still evades me. I think the guy has no interest in informing his readers. He has no respect for words other than to use them as a way of sounding smarter and more enlightened than other authors. Which brings me to Magritte and his particular brand of Surrealism. * * Surrealism is the painted version of that sentence I read to you. It was done mostly by artists wishing not to inform, but instead to seem smarter and more enlightened than other artists. Dali is a perfect example. * * Pity the poor fool who would claim to fully understand Dali's work while Dali was within earshot. He wasn't amused by people thinking they were his equals. Now give the guy his due: he was a genius after all. But look at Magritte and what you see is a blue-collar, down to earth, nice guy, everyday Joe Surrealist. * * Magritte didn't claim to be a genius. Or a master. In fact, he didn't even claim to be a gifted painter. He didn't make impossible images, he made improbable ones. Unlike most Surrealist art, a great number of Magritte's paintings depict scenes which could actually happen, things which could actually be. * * I like a good, snappy wit. Magritte's work has wit all over it. When it isn't obvious in the painting, it's there in the title. He did a big painting of a pipe. The title? This Is Not a Pipe. He did a portrait of himself painting a bird. His reference? An egg. This guy must have been a world-class dinner guest, just a hoot to have around. Maybe not, though – artists can get testy. Most times artists get testy when they are out somewhere far from art supplies and they get a good idea. They wish they were working right that minute and since they can't, they fidget and mumble and sometimes their wife, Sheryl, has to ask them the same question five times and kick them in the shin under the table, which just makes them fuss all the more. But I digress. * * Magritte was a wickedly fast painter, a "one-a-dayer" as we in the trade like to say. They don't look near as good as a Dali close-up, but who cares. He was from Belgium, which as we all know is also the country that gave us five-time world champion motocross racer Roger DeCoster – the best ever. Magritte joined and un-joined the Communist Party (now there's a witty bunch) many times, dabbled in filmmaking, wrote some, blah, blah, blah. That's not important. Take a good hard look at Magritte's paintings and what you hear is a guy whispering, "Hey pal, anything can happen." Read that last sentence again – it's almost surreal. * Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant.

Markus Pierson 'COYOTE PORTRAIT OF RIVERA' Paper
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Coyote Portrait of RiveraMedium: Serigraph on PaperOrientation: verticalImage Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesPaper Size: 17 x 18 inchesEdition Size: 175: Hand-deckled edges, Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Excerpts from his book, But I Digress, A Coyote's View of Art History * * DIEGO RIVERA * * Don't get a vegetarian chef to run your steakhouse's kitchen, and don't hire an atheist to interpret your Bible, and don't hire a Communist to paint a mural about the joys of Capitalism. A certain Mr. Rockefeller skipped that third rule when he hired Diego Rivera to paint a mural in the foyer of Thirty Rock (30 Rockefeller Center, NYC). Uh oh. Many coats of gesso and a litany of cuss words later, the Rivera mural is gone, with a proper pro-industry image replacing it (which, incidentally, is an image I adore . . . it is the single coolest thing in all of Manhattan). Lump it, Diego. * * He wasn't handsome. His bulging eyes looked in two directions, he was obese, had bad skin, and his hair was a mess. No matter, the gals dug him, and he was a sex machine. Richard Roundtree's Shaft character is actually Diego Rivera with a car and a gun. Okay, I'm stretching, but I'm right on the mark when I say Diego Rivera was easily as socially successful as Paul Gauguin. Gauguin, as we know, caught syphilis; Diego Rivera had cancer of the, um, winkle. Some might see instruction in this information, others not. I'm not touching it. * * What a lovely painter. He knew his people, Mexicans toiling humbly, working quietly and diligently. He loved them, and that love comes through so eloquently in his canvases. He saw these workers as heroic, regardless of their task, saw the work they do carrying flowers or tooling machines just as important as the work of any law-making bureaucrat or corporate CEO. Almost makes me want to turn Marxist and I would, if not for currently having a job as the CEO of my own corporation. * * Diego was married to Frida Kahlo, whom I'll tell you about next. He put her in some of his murals, depicting her handing out guns and knives to the Revolutionaries. How sweet. Diego, unlike, say, those wimpy Impressionists, was not into nicey-nicey stuff. He would have just as soon pistol-whipped Renoir as look at him. Rivera wanted his art to tell a tale, to send a message, to cause a revolution, to unite the workers and overthrow the man! Fight the power! Lenin lives! Trotsky's a putz! Murals rule! Government for the muralist, by the muralist! A muralist in every pot! We have nothing to paint but paint itself! * * It's just not right that I make fun this way, but you know, paintings don't overthrow governments any more than dancers win fights. It only happens in the movies. That fact, however, does in no way alter the beauty, the importance, the power, or the artistic splendor of the paintings and murals of Diego Rivera. * Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant.

The strong desire to develop that vision is one of the reasons why we find Watanabe's mezzotints of the nude female form so compelling: * * * Title: "Plage" * 1992 * Mezzotint on paper * Numbered 38 from a limited edition of 75 * Signed in pencil in the margin LR * Sheet: 15.5 by 21 inches * Image: 7.5 by 11.5 inches * Very good condition; never mounted, matted or framed. Slight crease to top right edge; 1" long discoloration to far right margin. * Certificate of Authenticity provided by Midwest Estate Buyers * * Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming — most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce — but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white. * * "During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist. * * Mikio Watanabe (Japan, b. 1954) completed his studies in Tokyo in 1977 and settled in Paris, where he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier 17. Since 1981, Mikio Watanabe has focused on mezzotint and his works can be found in many public collections including Bibliotheque National in Paris, the Central Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Markus Pierson 'COYOTE PORTRAIT OF DALI' Canvas
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Coyote Portrait of DaliMedium: Canvas SerigraphOrientation: verticalImage Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesPaper Size: 10 x 11.5 inchesEdition Size: 175: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Excerpts from his book, But I Digress, A Coyote's View of Art History * * SALVADOR DALI * * Salvador Dali was one of the pioneers and the undisputed star of the art movement called Surrealism. It was supposed to be sort of a bridge between conscious and unconscious, between reality and dreaming. He's also the primary reason most people think I get ideas while dreaming when, in fact, I never do. I once had a dream back when I was a teenager and I still remember it: I was motocross racing (when I was young, I ate, slept, drank and dated racing motorcycles) and the bike I was riding was a Husqvarna 360 with a purple gas tank! Weird city! Everyone knows the Husqvarna 360 has a maroon gas tank! Purple? It's nuts! My point here is simple: if Dali's dreams looked like his paintings . . . Whoa! No more pickles after eleven o'clock! That's one wacky conductor he's got on his dream-weaver train. I mean, can't you see it? Dali and his wife in bed sleeping, and Dali jumps up and says, "Wow, I just had the strangest dream!" And his wife says, "Oh good. I've had my eye on this beautiful Chanel suit and now I can get it!" But I digress. Let's talk about his work. * * Salvador Dali was a masterful painter, a true technician. Not that you'd know if he weren't because, well, it's surreal and so it's supposed to look wrong. Still, there's an obvious genius to his paintings, in particular the really huge ones and the really tiny ones. Very cool. What I like best about it is the obvious effort he put in. Man, that is real work! Anybody who works that hard honors his canvases that way – you've got to take your hat off to him. As for the validity of Surrealism, I once saw a hypnotized guy act like a chicken without his knowledge, so I don't trust the subconscious – it's too tricky. How could you even really know when it wasn't bluffing? So no, I don't put much stock in Surrealism. World's weird enough when you're awake, that's what I think. But again, you've got to admire Dali's work ethic. And, as you've probably already noticed, nothing in the world of fine arts gets more respect from me than good, old-fashioned elbow grease. It's the primary flaw in art education today: they just don't put enough emphasis on the kind of flat-out effort you can see in a Dali canvas. And so these misled art students think they need only sneeze at a blank canvas to be considered a competent painter! It makes me nuts! But I digress. * Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant.
Forest Canopy By Schofield Oil 16x20

Original SpongeBob Production Cel & Background Houses
This original hand-painted cel and background is from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. The story takes place under the deep blue sea in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob resides. SpongeBob, who is a yellow, porous sponge, is your typical happy-go-lucky character, as he is always cheerful and enjoys making people laugh. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's neighbor who is a starfish, boasts knowing nothing and is often getting himself into ridiculous situations. Between the homes of these two lies the home of the miserable Squidward, a squid, who is known for being grouchy and playing tricks on SpongeBob and Patrick. Both SpongeBob and Squidward work at the Krusty Krab, a fast food business run by the greedy money-loving Mr. Krabs, a crab, the arch rival of the evil, possibly misunderstood, Plankton. Another neighbor, Sandy Cheeks, an athletic squirrel who normally wears an astronaut's space suit, was introduced in "Tea at the Treedome." She spends most of her time inventing and experimenting. This is an evening scene of some houses and a road. * * Overall Size of Background: 13 1/2" x 19 3/4" Overall size of cel: 10 1/2" x 16 1/2"Very good condition; has been stored rolled, needs to be flattened * Original Production Backgrounds are used in the making of the final version of animated productions. The background establishes the location and the overall good mood of the scene. Typically, a background layout artist creates a drawing to establish the content of the scene, placement of characters, perspective and camera angle. Based on this drawing, the background artist creates a preliminary painting to confirm all of the scenes details, then the final production background which is used in the filming of the scene. When these backgrounds are individually photographed behind the progression of production cels, and projected at a rapid succession, the images in the foreground appear to move, creating an animated scene. * This cel has the black house on it, and the rest is on the paper. The bottom of the sheet has peg holes, and the animator's notations. *

Kaoru Saito Sa Sanqua Mezzotint Fashion Lady Art Print
This mezzotint artwork portrays a woman with flowers. The flowers appear to be held in her hands, but also take on a purely abstract decorative quality, along with her face. Artist: Kaoru Saito Title: Sa Sanqua Date: 1987 Medium: Mezzotint Signed and numbered Edition of 93 Size: 15" x 18" Condition: Excellent Retail gallery price 1000 USD Certificate of Authenticity included * This is a lovely image, and a fine mezzotint. Kaoru Saito is basically self-taught in the mezzotint process, yet he is considered to be one of its most accomplished technicians. It is an extremely difficult, labor-intensive and rarely practiced print method, including scratching hundreds, if not thousands of passes across a metal plate until the entire surface has a rough, uniform texture. The plate would print solid black if it were now run through the press. A burnishing tool is then used to rub smooth the areas which will print from gray to white. Mezzotint rewards the skilled practitioner with subtle shading and incredible graphic detail. Images in this series that include color were printed with additional, aquatint plates. Saito, now in his 70s, was born and still lives in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. *

Alvar produced his first original lithographs for a one-man show at Galerie Drouant in 1963. Since a decisive solo exhibition in Paris in 1963, Alvar has exhibited regularly throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. For a comprehensive list of Alvar's museum and private exhibitions, please see the additional information provided.Alvar's hometown of Tiana hosts one of his permanent public installations. In September 2001, a commissioned mixed media mural by Alvar was unveiled. The mural reflects on the four seasons and is affixed to The Four Seasons Building, named in reference to Alvar's mural. In 2003, city officials in Montgat, Spain, commissioned Alvar to create another permanent public installation: an 18-foot sculpture titled "Mediterranea" dedicated to the city's personality and seaside character, which now stands in the newly opened Plaza de Mallorquines.Perhaps one of the most prestigious honors Alvar has received was in 2006 when Restaura, a Spanish real estate company that is dedicated to building restoration projects for cities, asked Alvar to create a sculpture to honor the famous Spanish cellist and composer Pablo Casals (1876 - 1973). In early 2008, the sculpture was placed on a street in the Boulogne Billancourt area of Paris that after a major renovation has also been renamed for Pablo Casals. In addition to the sculpture, Restaura also commissioned Alvar to create a large painting and lithograph suite honoring Pablo Casals. The lithograph is displayed in their headquarters as an honor to their fellow Spaniards Casals and Alvar. In 1993 a book devoted to the artist's paintings was published in Spain and the United States. In 2001, Alvar: Thirty Years of Lithography, a book chronicling the lithographic creations of Alvar was published. In 2005, Alvar in Color and Poetry, a book by Dr. Betty Jean Craige, Marjorie Agosin, and Alvar was published.

Beautiful mixed media art piece on extra thick arches paper. Measures 35½" x 24½". Hand signed and numbered by the artist. This is numbered from a limited edition of 750. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Born in the English West Midlands, Benfield studied at Stourbridge College of Art and then went on to do further study at Wrexham College of Art. After leaving the academic world, he set up his own studio near London and concentrated on drawing and painting figures. Within a few years, his work was collected throughout Europe and he reputation was firmly established. An award-winning illustrator, Benfield has a natural talent for depicting things as seen. His work is spontaneous and is reflected by his drawn lines and dashes of color. The figures dissolve in and out of their backgrounds and move across the surfaces of his paintings and graphic works. He paints rapidly and discards most of his paintings and drawings, keeping only those that he feels are perfected in their conception rather than overwork those he feels are not correct. In recent years, his work has begun to be exhibited in galleries in America as well as in Europe.

Markus Pierson 'LOVE AWAITS THE BRAVE' Canvas
Artist: Markus PiersonTitle: Love Awaits the BraveMedium: Canvas SerigraphOrientation: verticalImage Size: 21 x 52 inchesPaper Size: 21 x 52 inchesEdition Size: 195: Signed by the artist, individually numbered, accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the publisher.Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant.
Hillside Forest By Schofield 20x16 Oil

Rooftop Serenade 28x21 Signed
Robert Hoppe Glamorous dream visions are the central components of Robert Hoppe's artworks. In the tradition of movements such as Russian Constructivism and German Bauhaus, Hoppe stresses collaboration of the arts, and his work evolves from a variety of experiences. He is a painter, a draftsman and a sculptor, and he has created set designs for ballet companies and avant-garde dance troupes, including Alvin Ailey's tribute to Duke Ellington.Hoppe has received critical acclaim for sets and costumes designed for the Pennsylvania Ballet's homage to George Gershwin, "Rialto." Clive Barnes of the New York Times wrote, "The best thing about 'Rialto' is the way it looks - the truly Art Deco backdrop of the New York skyline and the neatly variegated costumes are a tribute to the designer Robert Hoppe's visual sensibility..." Hoppe attended the School of Visual Arts, New York City and the Polakov Studio of Scenic Design, New York City. He is a member of the noted theatrical guild United Scenic Artists. His awards include the prestigious Desi Award in Graphic Design, and an Emmy for scenic design. Extravaganzas, such as those produced by Radio City Music Hall, the Ice Follies, and early Hollywood musicals are inspiration for Hoppe's special flair for theatrical imagery. The gaiety and splendor of his blithe dancers and grandiose settings recall the vibrant era of Busby Berkeley and the Ziegfeld Follies. Enamored of the great architectural renderings of the 1920's and 1930's, Hoppe deftly blends urban starkness with post-modern romanticism. Graced with a patina of sophisticated elegance, his cityscapes emerge with the texture of magic.Working with gouache and acrylics, he favors a pallet of muted colors, and the dramatic resonance of chiaroscuro. Hoppe is an impeccible draftsman. Using an innovative range of perspectives, visual mystiques are created by the formal play between background and figures. The total illusion of light, movement and space draws the viewer into the action. Hoppe's celebrations of pageantry and grandeur reconfirm the timeless relevance of romantic fantasy.
