Original Oil Collage on Canvas ''The Secret Admirer of Utopia Parkway'' by Richard Merkin (1938-2009). Richard Merkin has sold at auction on ask Art 33 paintings, many with record prices. Richard Merkin, is an artist who often produced artwork to accompany articles in The New Yorker magazine. The magazine displayed a full-page copy of one of Merkin's exhibit pieces being shown at the Wickiser Gallery in the city. "The Secret Admirer of Utopia Parkway" is a homage to Joseph Cornell by Merking, and not only contains a drawing of Cornell in the lower right corner, but is also filled with images related to Cornell's works: vaudeville, the store-front window, alphabet letters and blocks, part of a show poster, and featuring a partly dressed woman who could represent many of the women who attracted Cornell's attention. Mr. Merkin’s pet obsessions covered all manner of ephemera and exotica, from Fiestaware and Big Little Books to baseball players from the Negro and Cuban leagues. He was particularly keen on vintage pornography, an enthusiasm he shared in two books. “Velvet Eden” (1979), written with Bruce McCall, showcased his collection of early amateur pornography, and “Tijuana Bibles” (1997), written with the photojournalist Bob Adelman, paid tribute to the sexually explicit comics that Americans bought across the Mexican border from the 1930s to the 1950s."
