1965 Special Mint Set SMS Original packaging including Mint letter
In 1964, just when the mint was removing 90% silver coins from circulation, and the US was having a coin shortage, the Mint announced that beginning in 1965, no Proof Sets, or Mint Sets would be produced, Instead they would be making a Special Mint Set. Special Mint Set coins were not proofs, and were not uncirculated, Mint State pieces. Dies for the coins were over polished, while the planchet themselves were not polished. The resulting SMS coins have a brilliant, proof like appearance, much nicer than the run-of-the-mill circulation coins. In 1965 these sets were released in the Traditional Mint Cellophane and White Envelope and in 1966 and 1967 they were packaged in hard, pale blue plastic holders. Note, the set contains a 40% Half Dollar. Estimated Value $20

Also 1899 was the 100th anniversary of Washington's death When examining a Lafayette Dollar evidence of wear first appears on Washington's cheekbone and on Lafayette's lower curls. On the reverse, check the highest points of the design—the boot, thigh and rear leg of the horse. Blast White, superior luster, very attractive Morgan. It is the always sought after 1878-p 7/8, VAM 33 with the wild doubled legs. Whenever you find the Doubled legs on the reverse it's like scratching a lottery ticket when you flip it over and look to see if the Cotton bolls are tripled. If they are you just made $10K-$20k. and your holding 1 of 70 known VAM 44s, but if they are not tripled, then you have the VAM 33, which is what this coin is. A Desirable and Interesting VAM. 1853 3c Silver Piece Grades Almost Uncirculated au58
A nice example of this scarce issue. The 3c silver was originally introduced when the postal rates were dropped from 5 cents to 3 cents. While there were circulating pennies and half pennies, copper did not circulate much in the south as they did not think much of copper and demanded silver or gold in their coinage. So the bill reducing the postal rates also called for the introduction of a 3 cent silver piece to facilitate postal payments. NGC's Price Guide lists au58 at $192. 1923-s Monroe Doctrine Centennial Grades Choice Uncirculated ms64
A great Example, with good hair on the Obverse. This coin generally shows little detail in the hair due to a weak strike, this example has detail in the hair. One may think that the reverse is the two continents of The western Hemisphere but upon closer examination you will see that they are two women bent into the general shapes of the two continents. When examining a Monroe Commemorative the cheeks of the two statesmen on the obverse and the figures that represent the two continents on the reverse are the highpoints and will show wear first.
