Rare Miami Powder Company Poster C. 1880's in original frame and glass remaining in very good to nea
in original frame and glass remaining in very good to near fine condition, framed 34 1/2" X 42 3/4". History of the Miami Powder Company: In 1843 brothers Alvin and Lorenzo Austin built a powder mill in Goes, Ohio. The mill was located near the city of Xenia. The Austin brothers and a third party known as Carlton built this mill. Not much is known of Carlton except that he sold off his shares of the company to J.W. King. The company was then named Austin and King Powder company. In 1855 the Austin brothers left the company. King and new shareholders took over, and the company was renamed The Miami Powder Company. Their offices were located in Xenia, Ohio along with a mill called Frontier Powder Mills. Some powder cans have been found that were simply labeled "Frontier Sporting Rifle Powder-Frontier Mills. There are actually Miami Powder Company cans and are usually found with stenciled labels. As the Civil War began, so did government powder contracts for the company. The production of rifle powder increased to 10,000 kegs a year. Business was very brisk. But, when the Civil War came to an end in 1865, so did the company's huge military contracts. However, it was able to stay alive with its production of powder for sporting and mining use. In 1872 Addison Faye and group of new investors gained control of the company. Forced out in 1877, King and his nephew left the business. One year later they formed the Kings Great Western Powder Company. This same company later became the Kings Powder Company. 1907-1925 the offices were in Chicago, Ill. This little known powder company now fallen into history but has left a name which collectors still keep very much alive. Whether it a can or in this case a poster, or any other piece that is connected to Miami Powder Company, one thing is certain, their items are very rare. Ref. period B&W photo. Potato Creek Johnny born John Perret in 1866 who became one of Historic Deadwood South Dakota's top three famous characters when he found what was considered one of the largest gold nuggets in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Potato Creek near Spearfish. The nugget weighed 7 3/4 ounces making Johnny an instant Deadwood legend. Deadwood business man W.E. Adams bought the nugget for $250 and placed it in the Adams Museum where it is located to this day. Johnny went on to become the face of tourism in South Dakota in the early days, instrumental in helping promote Deadwood as well as playing a large role in the Days of 76 parade. After his death in 1943 Potato Creek Johnny was buried at Mt. Moriah overlooking Deadwood close to Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Preacher Smith and other famous Deadwood Characters. The photo of Potato Creek Johnny wearing the hat which is marked Dunlap Supreme The Toggery Butte Montana, is in fine condition, the original hat band intact as well as matching trim to the brim.
