Due to this, the "ghostly" memory of his lost sibling was to haunt him for the rest of his life. Dali took on a unique and conspicuous personality. He felt as though he was forced to live both as himself and his dead brother, which caused him to have a particular obsession with decay and petrification. In 1922 Dali was accepted into a special school for painting, sculpture, and engraving known as the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. He exhibits his paintings in a student art show at the Dalmau gallery in Barcelona. A year later, Dali was suspended from the academy for criticizing his lecturers and inciting a student rebellion. Due to this, the "ghostly" memory of his lost sibling was to haunt him for the rest of his life. Dali took on a unique and conspicuous personality. He felt as though he was forced to live both as himself and his dead brother, which caused him to have a particular obsession with decay and petrification. In 1922 Dali was accepted into a special school for painting, sculpture, and engraving known as the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. He exhibits his paintings in a student art show at the Dalmau gallery in Barcelona. A year later, Dali was suspended from the academy for criticizing his lecturers and inciting a student rebellion. Erté (birth name birth name Romain de Tirtoff), the famed fashion and stage designer, was born in 1892 to a wealthy family in St. Petersburg , Russia. Erte is considered by many as the epitomy of flamboyance and longevity in twentieth century art and design. Erté, even as a child, did not wish to follow his father's footsteps into the military, who was an Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy. Erté showed great talent for design, creating his first costume at the age of 5 and then moved to Paris in 1912 at the age of 18. In Paris he worked beside Parisian designer Paul Poiret as a fashion illustrator and learned the art of couture and discovering how clothes could affect the look of a woman's body. As a young man in the 1920's Erte was hired by the magazine Harper's Bazaar where his flamboyant fashion designs of elaborately plumed hats and long, flowing dresses captured and paralleled the current interest in the emerging design aesthetic of the Art Deco period. He worked at Harper's Bazaar for a full 22 years, and created over 200 magazine covers for the publication in his own Erte distinctive style. While working for the magazine he was hired to design costumes and stage sets for the girls of the famous Folies-Bergère and at the New York City George White's Scandals Club. Erte also worked in the 1920s and 30s on film costume design at the MGM Studios in Hollywood as well as theatre and opera productions. The extravagence of Erté's designs slowed in cultural popularity with the beginning of World War two, and even after the war most people had more practical wants and basic needs. His mother was overly devoted to her only living child. Henri was weak and often sick. Due to this, the "ghostly" memory of his lost sibling was to haunt him for the rest of his life. Dali took on a unique and conspicuous personality. He felt as though he was forced to live both as himself and his dead brother, which caused him to have a particular obsession with decay and petrification. In 1922 Dali was accepted into a special school for painting, sculpture, and engraving known as the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. He exhibits his paintings in a student art show at the Dalmau gallery in Barcelona. A year later, Dali was suspended from the academy for criticizing his lecturers and inciting a student rebellion. At the age of 18, Dali had become a member of the young elite, an emerging group of intellectuals. In 1923, Dali first started to experiment with cubism. He became a leader of an avant-garde group of young Spanish intellectuals. He has his first one man show in the same year at the Dalmau Gallery.In 1926 Dali takes his first trip to Brussels and Paris where he visits Picasso and Miro. He also has his second one man show at the Dalamu Gallery and is expelled from the San Fernando Academy due to his refusal to take the oral exams. The family remained there until 1927, and young Moskowitz received his first education in Prague's schools. Soon after, his family moved to New York City, and in 1927 Moskowitz became the pupil of Henry Wickey at the Art Students League, having finally resolved his conflict between a passion for drawing and a desire to follow the rabbinical profession of his forefathers. Between 1935 and 1938, he traveled to Israel and to Europe where he studied the works of the old masters, an interest derived from his first teacher and one that eventually led to his active collaboration in 1954 on the four-volume series, "Great Drawings of All Time." * In 1939, Moskowitz made his first trip to Mexico, and stayed for six months. In 1943 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and moved to New Mexico, where he remained for seven years drawing the Indians and becoming an active member of the Taos-Sante Fe artists group. His book, "Patterns and Ceremonials of the Indians of the Southwest," appeared in 1949. Since 1962, Moskowitz has divided his time between Paris and New York. He is a superb draughtsman in the old tradition, drawing with a quick, nervous, but incisive line that is extremely lively and full of movement. His subject matter takes its shape from the life that he sees around him-natural forms, the human figure, landscapes, and people at their daily tasks. *
