UMAYYAD: al-Walid I, 705-715, AR dirham (2.90g), Ramhurmuz, AH94, A-128, Klat-387, lovely About Uncirculated, R, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. Only AH90 and 93 are frequently seen, specially 90. All other dates are at least rare. One must be careful interpreting the number of specimens cited by Klat as an accurate indication of rarity. He cites more specimens for 94 than 93, yet according my own experience of more than 45 years, I would estimate that for every 94 I've encountered, I've seen at least 3 or 4 examples of 93. And AH90 is probably at least twice as common as 93. Quantity in auction sales must also be understood carefully. Wasit 93 is probably at least 50 times more common than Ramhurmuz 93, but unless one examines the group lots, Ramhurmuz 93 will appear at auction more frequently than Wasit 93!

UMAYYAD: Sulayman, 715-717, AR dirham (2.89g), Sabur, AH97, A-131, Klat-428, wonderful strike on unusually broad flan, choice Extremely Fine, R, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. Most dirhams of Sabur 97 bear the usually three circles around obverse, one around reverse, with a fourth outer circle on the obverse made of large pellets instead of the usually small dots. The normal 5 annulets appear on both sides, except that the obverse annulets are minuscule, barely noticeable in the narrow space between the 3rd and 4th circles. This broad planchet ensured that the entire 4th circle is completely visible.

Graffiti on Umayyad and early Abbasid dinars (until about AH220) should not be regarded as a defect but rather as an aspect of contemporary monetary tradition, ditto for silver dirhams.

UMAYYAD: Marwan II, 744-750, AR dirham (2.82g), Ifriqiya, AH128
UMAYYAD: Marwan II, 744-750, AR dirham (2.82g), Ifriqiya, AH128, A-142, Klat-110, eight-point star below the obverse field, choice Very Fine, RRR. After AH120, Umayyad dirhams of Ifriqiya are known dated 124, 125, and all years 128-132, all of them extremely rare. The last year that is reasonably common is AH118, with 119 very rare and 120 extremely rare. It is believed that taxation funding from North African ceased to reach the Umayyad centers, such as Damascus and Basra. As a result, the post-120 dates are only found in hoards from North African and Spain, whereas pre-119 dirhams are often found as frequently in eastern hoards as western hoards. The year 128 is the only Ifriqiya date that bears a star beneath the obverse field.

ABBASID: al-Saffah, 749-754, AV dinar (4.23g), NM, AH134, A-210, nice Extremely Fine, S, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. All Abbasid gold dinars lack a mint name until AH198, with most dinars still without mint name as late as AH212. Dinars cannot be assigned to a mint or region until AH170, after which most are assigned mainly to a mint in Egypt and another in Iraq, presumably in Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad). From AH215 onwards all Abbasid dinars bear the mint name, with very few exceptions.

Dirham al-Saffah struck at Damascus (Dimashq) retain the Umayyad style of the Damascus dirham, whereas all other mints of al-Saffah use the eastern standard, as on the Wasit dirhams of the late Umayyads.

ABBASID: al-Hadi, 785-786, AR dirham (2.83g), Qasr al-Salam, AH169, A-217.2, some very light porosity, otherwise lovely, bold Very Fine, RRR, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. Qasr al-Salam was a temporary location of the Baghdad mint under al-Mahdi, AH167-169, brought back to Madinat al-Salam before the death of al-Mahdi in AH169. Some dirhams of al-Mahdi dated 169 exist. His successor, al-Hadi, struck dirhams at Madinat al-Salam 169-170, probably never at Qasr al-Salam. This coin was probably struck at Madinat al-Salam, but with an obsolete obverse die left over from Qasr al-Salam. Or perhaps the engraver goofed, and cut Qasr instead of Madina. Typos happen!
