A strong glass reveals a faint diagonal hairline scratch through star 3 and a couple small planchet voids on the chin and jawline, as struck. Nicely struck E-MDS. Faded mint color shows through in protected areas of the obverse while the reverse is a darker shade of chocolate brown mottled with lighter brown. The surfaces are quite attractive with satiny mint luster covering even the highest points of the design. The obverse is solidly in the gem category, but the uneven toning on the reverse keeps that side from a similar lofty rating. The only mark is a small spot of darker steel toning in the field off the tip of the chin. LDS with all the die cracks listed by Wright clearly present, including the bisecting crack on the reverse passing from F-A to NI. Called MS65 and finest known in the Bland census. Close to gem except for a reddish chocolate spot at the top of star 12, a microscopic speck of carbon resting against the forehead, a barely visible scuff over the 8 in the date, and a tiny speck of fine carbon nestled against the leaf below the E in UNITED. Late die state with the "Finger Mouse" break on top of the head fully developed. The slightly rough depression in the field below star 5 is fully developed as well, a result of uneven die wear. A good identifying mark is a small spot of darker bluish steel toning between the 8 and second 1 in the date. E-MDS. The dentils are complete around both sides and the bottom of the C in CENT is clear. An outstanding example of this very scarce variety. 1820 N-15 R2 Small Date MS64. Highly lustrous mint red mellowing to steel brown showing at least 40% of the red on the obverse and 75% on the reverse. Sharply struck and very attractive, nearly a gem cent. The only marks are a small spot of darker toning at the dentils above star 4, another inside the 0 in the date, and another over the E in ONE. None of these spots contains carbon or verdigris. MDS. Very fine die rust covers the devices on both sides and there is minor crumbling inside the N's in ONE CENT. In addition there is sharp, clear doubling along the right edge of the ear (caused by die bounce). This piece was called "nearly MS70" by Ted Naftzger when he owned it and Bill Noyes has graded it MS68 and finest known, his photo #56018. Sharply struck E-MDS showing a rim cud break from star 4.5 to star 5 and a smaller one above star 6. A premium example of a date that is extremely difficult to find in high grade. The only marks, and they are not at all significant, are a pair of small spots of darker toning right of the date, another nestled against the left side of star 7, and a splash of chocolate toning at F-A. Sharply struck showing full radial lines in all the stars. A choice cent, very close to MS64. MDS with a die crack from the curl at star 13 down to the dentils just right of the date and a rim cud break at star 11 extending halfway up to star 10. The repunching on the 5 remains sharp. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas with only a hint of rub on the highest points of the devices. Essentially void of defects. A very tiny nick over the left top of the T in CENT may help identify this piece in the future. M-LDS. 1830 N-2 R2 Large Letters Reverse MS65. Lustrous chocolate and light bluish steel brown with faded mint color showing in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and the obverse is a perfect gem offering fabulous eye appeal. The reverse is not quite as attractive thanks to a minor splash of darker toning inside the wreath and another at the dentils over the first S in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS with a die line connecting the tip of the wreath ribbon to the base of the U in UNITED. Minor doubling shows on the browlock (caused by die bounce). Late die state with a small rim cud that extends just inside the dentils at star 11. The obverse is very slightly misaligned to K-1 while the reverse is well centered on the planchet. No defects, but the slightly uneven toning on the obverse distracts from an otherwise beautiful cent. M-LDS. The die cracks are clear, the stars are drawing to the rims, and the reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Called MS60 by Noyes, his photo #28828. 1834 N-2 R1 Small 8, Large Stars, Medium Letters MS62. Lustrous medium brown and chocolate with faint peeps of faded mint color on the obverse and 5% of the mellowed red remaining on the reverse. There is a subtle swipe of darker toning at TATES and a very light scuff in the field between stars 11 & 12. Otherwise this cent is choice. M-LDS. The small spikes up from the dentils under the date present in earlier die states are now gone. In addition, die chatter created sharp triple profiles on the tip of the nose and the lips. A fine radial die crack has formed connecting the midpoint of the earlier crack from star 11 to star 12 to the dentils. 1835 N-8 R1 Head of 1836 MS62. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 15% of the bright original mint red remaining, mostly on the right side of the obverse. No contact marks, but there are traces of an old fingerprint on the right side of the obverse where the mint red dominates. In addition there is a very shallow planchet flake or void at the dentils under star 12 and a spot of reddish brown toning at the dentils above star 5. Otherwise this piece is quite nice, and if the mint red color turned to steel brown thus blending away the fingerprints I suspect this piece would qualify for choice. M-LDS. The bisecting die crack up through the 1 in the date extends through the portrait and emerges weakly into the field below star 8. Estimated Value $1,000-UP. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet extending to the highest points of the design. The only marks are a few delicate puffs of darker olive and steel toning on the obverse, including one in the field above the right edge of star 2 and another on the neck near the curl, plus a planchet flake on the rim over the right edge of the M in AMERICA. LDS. The dies are worn and the tiny lump on the base of T in CENT is nearly gone. Clear doubling caused by die bounce shows along the back edge of the ear. Comes with an old provenance. 1836 N-1 R1+. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Lustrous light golden brown and reddish tan with steel brown toning on the highpoints. The toning is a bit uneven and has a look that suggests it may have been dipped decades ago. However, the luster remains attractive and the "look" is nice enough to draw a 64RB grade from PCGS. The notable marks are a swipe of darker toning at UN in UNITED and a small one on the right top of the N in ONE, and both of these darker stains contain a faint dusting of carbon. LDS with all the die cracks described by Newcomb and Wright, including the final one through the dentils at star 10 through that star and the portrait and star 2 and the dentils. Nicely struck except on the hair curl at star 13, which is flat. Here is where the EAC census graders part ways. Bland says this cent is MS65 and tied for CC#1. 1837 N-3 R3 Plain Hair Cord, Medium Letters MS65. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel brown on the highpoints, about two-thirds of the faded mint color remaining. Very attractive with nearly flawless surfaces. The only marks, and they are barely visible and certainly do not catch the eye, are a tiny planchet chip on the lower edge of the tip of the chin, a small spot of darker toning at the dentils over star 5, and a tiny tick on the left end of the right top of the N in ONE. MDS. The fields are covered with very fine radial die flowlines but the irregular die scratch from the left end of the line under CENT is still clear. 1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord, Head of 1838 MS63+. Highly lustrous light chocolate and bluish steel brown with faded mint color showing in the protected areas on both sides. Flawless except for very faint traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the portrait. LDS with rim cud breaks from star 11 down to the bottom of star 13. In addition, there is a curious collection of die scratches at the dentils from star 3 to star 4 with a much smaller patch of similar marks left of star 2 and at the dentil tips over AM. At first glance you would swear these were scratches added after minting, but all the latest state examples show the same marks, so they have to be in the die. All the die cracks previously described are stronger and there is an additional horizontal crack passing through the lump on the bust. These dies are really cracked up. The only defects, and they are hardly worthy of mention, are a thin nick hidden in the dentils at star 5 and a small spot of darker toning just right of the hair bun. MDS. The doubling always seen on the left side of the wreath (from a real doubled die, not die bounce) is clear. The strike is slightly uneven, also as usual, due to non-parallel die faces causing the upper stars to be relatively flat while the lower ones are strong. Corresponding weakness shows along the bottom of the reverse while the upper part of that side is strongly impressed. A good candidate for CC#1 honors (or at least a tie). 1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 (or inverted 9) AU50. Glossy light chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the obverse highpoints. Subtle overtones of bluish steel are found in the recesses of the hair curls and at star 5. Frosty mint luster covers the protected areas on both sides and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. There is just a light touch of wear on the highest points of the design. A thin diagonal nick just right of the nostril, a couple more over the E's in ONE CENT, and a collection of microscopic planchet flakes (as struck) around the end of the wreath stem are the notable marks. MDS with a clear die crack from the dentils over star 3 to the nose and eye fading out when it exits the right corner of the eye. Called AU50 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#2, his photo #28678. One of the other CC#2 examples in the census lists is impounded in the ANS Museum. The field of top pieces is quite limited, and the pressure to obtain one is great. Only a single mint state example is known, and it may not be available for decades. 1839 N-3 R1 Head of 1838 MS64. Choice lustrous steel and chocolate brown with generous traces of mint color remaining on the obverse and nearly half the bright mint red remaining on the reverse. Outstanding eye appeal with the look of a flawless gem. The only marks are a very faint spot of slightly darker toning in the field off the chin, two tiny specks of darker toning between the T & E in STATES, and a microscopic tick on the line under N in CENT. MDS displaying fine radial die flowlines in the fields on both sides and the start of a depression in the field (from die erosion) between star 1 and the throat. 1839 N-4 R1 Silly Head MS65. Lustrous mix of bright mint red and frosty steel brown, nearly half the original mint color remaining on both sides. A spot of reddish brown carbon in the dentils over star 10 is the only defect worthy of consideration. Sharply struck MDS with radial lines in all the stars. The short dash at the dentil tips between the 3 & 9 is gone and the one right of the 9 is weak. A wonderful example of the "Silly Head" type, one of the very best of the type regardless of the die variety. Called MS66 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21476. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost that is unbroken. Would rate gem status if not for faint traces of an old fingerprint in the center of the reverse. Sharply struck E-MDS. The only defects, and they are trivial, are traces of slightly darker toning near the dentils left of star 5, right of star 8, and under star 11, plus a tiny spot of dark toning inside the bottom of the E in UNITED and another one at the right top of the C in CENT. Nicely struck E-MDS. The small spur to the left from the bottom of the 8 and the die lines to the left from star 7 are clear. The always-present bisecting obverse die crack is light. The best identifying marks are a tiny vertical nick hidden in the hair at the top of the ear, a light nick at the bottom of the front edge of the neck, and a shallow planchet flake under the right foot of the 1 in the date (as struck). Very fine die polishing lines cover the obverse fields and those fields are slightly reflective adding to the eye appeal. A beautiful example of a common variety, perfect for a date or type set. In fact it is a challenge to find any identifying marks at all on this attractive cent. The only ones I can find, and it take a good glass to see them, are a microscopic planchet chip on the cheek left of the earlobe and another on the rim above the left edge of the E in STATES, both as struck. 1851/81 N-3 R1 51 Over Inverted 18 MS60+. Frosty chocolate and steel with traces of reddish tan faded down from mint color in the protected areas on both sides. The only marks are a couple tiny wisps of darker toning at stars 8-10 and a spot of dark toning in the dentils left of the date. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The repunching on the date is bold and the obverse fields are covered with sharp die lines left behind when a mint worker attempted to efface the incorrectly placed date. This is a great example of the 51 over inverted 18 variety (or 51 over 81 as it is often called), because the early die state allows the error to be seen easily. In fact the repunching is bold enough on this piece to show a part of the inverted 5 inside the bottom of the correctly positioned 8, thereby indicating that the entire date was inverted, then corrected, not just the 18. No notable signs of contact and excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only marks are a spot of darker toning on the right side of star 9 and another smaller one on the left top of the E in STATES. 1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55 MS63. Choice frosty light olive and bluish steel with generous traces of faded mint color remaining on the reverse. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint luster and offer outstanding eye appeal for the grade. The only marks are a shallow planchet void on the rim at star 12 and a tiny nick on the rim under star 13. EDS, die state b. Star #6 is very faint thanks to a die clog in that area (the so-called 12-Star die state). Minor clogging is starting to show on the bust tip and star 1 as that area of the die is accumulating debris as well. 1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5 MS64. Lustrous bright mint red fading to light steel brown on the devices, nearly three-fourths of the original red remaining, mostly on the reverse. An eye-catching cent with just a few minor defects. These include a small diagonal nick on the cheek right of the upper lip, a couple microscopic ticks on the throat, and traces of an old fingerprint at star 10. Otherwise this cent is a gem. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines over UN are weak but remain partially visible and the fields are beginning to display radial die flowlines. In addition there is a very shallow low spot (caused by debris, especially grease, on the die) at NT in CENT reaching up to the E in ONE. Tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. 1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-13 Rarity-6 Fair-2. Glossy light steel gray. No roughness or marks, just heavily worn. Most of the Pine Tree remains visible while everything else on the obverse is gone. On the reverse the 652 is weak but easily readable and the II in XII can be made out. Nothing else remains. Excessive wear and apparent heavy clipping are typical for this very rare variety. The weight of this piece is 41.7 grains, which is quite low for a shilling of the day, but it is consistent with the weight of the finer Noe-13 example offered in the Ford collection (39.2 grains, Stack's 10/18/05:105). 1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny Nelson-4 Rarity-3 AU55. Attractive glossy light chocolate brown with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the obverse. Mint luster covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. Just a hint of friction on the highpoints from mint state. Clearly one of the finest known of this "Older Head" variety. A straight-edge planchet clip affects the dentils above the head and the opposing area at the bottom of the 1 in the date. Weight 108.2 grains. Estimated Value $650-UP. 1787 Connecticut Miller 16.4-n Rarity-6+. NGC graded VF-30. Steel brown and light chocolate. No verdigris. The planchet is decent but not perfect as there are numerous microscopic planchet striation flakes on both sides. The only contact marks are some extremely faint hairlines on the portrait. Struck slightly off center to K-12 leaving the bottom of the date off the planchet. The legends are easily readable while the date is more challenging but still readable. LDS with a strong radial die crack passing between ON to the back of the head and a small cud break connecting the tops of those two letters. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. An important example of this very rare variety. Better than the examples in the Taylor (B&M 3/26/87) and Tanenbaum (Stack's/Bowers 1/24/12) sales, missing in Ford (Stack's 5/10/05), and comparable to the Perkins (Stack's 1/12/2000) example which was from the early state of these dies. 1788 Connecticut Miller 10-C Rarity-5 F15. Sharpness VF30 but there is microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas and a dull rim pinch at the bottom of the obverse. In addition there are some light scratches mostly hidden in the patina on the obverse. Partially glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with greenish olive toning in protected areas. Struck over a 1785 Nova Constellatio copper with bold undertype visible on both sides. Weight 114.9 grains. Estimated Value $80-UP.

The only defects are microscopic planchet chips or flakes that cover the planchet, as struck. Nicely centered and well struck showing a strong date and legends. Later die state with a strong die crack passing diagonally across the shield. The Outlined Shield feature is noted on the NGC label. Estimated Value $500-UP.

1785 Vermont Landscape Ryder-2 Rarity-2 "VERMONTS" variety. SEGS graded EF-40. Rather glossy light to medium chocolate brown. The planchet is mostly smooth, certainly better than normal for the variety, but there are a couple tiny fissures at DECIMA. The only significant marks are several dull rim dents along the lower right quadrant of the obverse and along the opposing rim area on the reverse. Early die state, prior to any die cracks. Struck slightly off center to K-5 leaving the lower half of the date off the planchet. Our grade is F15 sharpness net F12. The attribution is noted on the SEGS label. Estimated Value $400-UP.

1786 Vermont Landscape Ryder-6 Rarity-2 "VERMONTENSIUM" variety VF20. Ten points sharper but there is some very fine roughness on the reverse, mostly at DECIMA into the sunrays below, plus a couple tiny pits between the 1 & 7 in the date. Otherwise this planchet is quite nice for a Vermont Landscape. Frosty steel brown and chocolate with hints of reddish chocolate toning in some of the protected areas. Struck slightly off center to K-10 leaving parts of the legend off the planchet (which is typical for the issue) and there is a tiny curved planchet clip at ON in VERMONTENSIUM. The date is bold and the legends that made it onto the planchet are strong. EDS, before the die crack at the date. Weight 128.0 grains. Estimated Value $600-UP.

1786 Vermont Landscape Ryder-6 Rarity-2 "VERMONTENSIUM" variety. SEGS graded EF-40. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye, but a strong glass reveals faint roughness under the dark patina. No planchet flaws, which is quite unusual, and the details are strong except in the central part of the reverse due to swelling in that area. The only marks are a few faint hairline scratches on the right side of the reverse, all well hidden in the natural patina. The obverse is nicely centered with complete legends all around while the reverse is off slightly to K-12 leaving the upper half of QUARTA off the planchet. EDS, prior to the obverse die crack. 1786 Vermont Landscape Ryder-8 Rarity-4- "VERMONTENSIUM" variety F15. Five points sharper but there is some shallow corrosion with greenish verdigris at ST in STELLA. The remainder of the planchet is quite decent, especially for the variety, displaying only trivial roughness and planchet flakes in a few areas. The date is bold and the legends are complete except for a few letters on the reverse that are affected by swelling. Mostly glossy medium chocolate brown fading to darker chocolate in some of the protected areas. The repunching on the 1 in the date is obvious. Weight 125.2 grains. Estimated Value $400-UP.

1786 Vermont Ryder-9 Rarity-3 the "Baby Head" variety VG10. Sharpness VF20 but the planchet is covered with fine to moderate roughness. No verdigris or contact marks, but there are some of the usual planchet imperfections that plague this variety. The most-significant of these is a fissure from the top of the head down to the throat. The obverse is well centered on the planchet but the reverse is off a bit to K-4 leaving the bottom of the date off the planchet. The remainder of the date is rather strong. Slightly glossy chocolate brown. An acceptable if imperfect example of this very popular "Baby Head" variety, but a perfect one may not exist. Weight 109.4 grains. Estimated Value $200-UP.

1788 Vermont Ryder-16 Rarity-1 VF25. The obverse is a very attractive glossy light chocolate brown while the reverse is a darker shade of chocolate and olive with lighter brown toning on the highpoints. The obverse is nearly choice and offers excellent eye appeal for the grade. The only defect on that side is a planchet void in the center, as struck. The reverse is decent but the fields and protected areas are dusted with extremely fine crud that hides any gloss in those areas. A minor planchet clip affects the dentils over ER in VERMON and the opposing ones at ND in INDE. The date is clear and the legends are bold. Weight 115.3 grains. Estimated Value $300-UP.

1788 Vermont Ryder-21 Rarity-5 G6. Rather glossy dark olive and steel. The surfaces are decent, especially for this grade, but there is extremely faint roughness under the glossy patina. LDS with severe die failure on the reverse and a cud break off the bust tip. The upper half of the 178 remain visible but the second 8 is faint, and the legends are easily readable. 1788 Vermont Ryder-25 Rarity-2+ F15. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate fading to darker olive brown in protected areas. Decent surfaces and eye appeal for the grade. 1787 Nova Eborac Breen-986 Figure Seated Left VG10. Double Struck. Sharpness EF45 or better but dull and covered with uniform fine to moderate granularity. Most likely lost in soil after little if any circulation. No marks or verdigris. Dark steel and olive. Boldly double struck. The first strike was about 4 millimeters off center to K-1 and the second was fairly well centered on the planchet. Clear evidence of the first strike shows on both sides with the lower part of EBORA above the centered EBOR and strong remnants of the shield visible to the right and slightly below the second shield. Too bad about the surfaces because this would have been a great error strike. Weight 108.9 grains. Estimated Value $150-UP.

1783 Washington Unity Cent Breen-1188 EF40. Sharpness very close to mint state but the obverse is covered with microscopic granularity. No verdigris or contact marks. The reverse is covered with pre-striking file adjustment marks that are always present to some degree on this type. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty chocolate and dark steel brown. 1783 Washington Draped Bust Cent without Button in Copper Breen-1191 AU55. Lustrous steel and chocolate brown with a splash of lighter reddish brown toning in the center of the reverse. Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. Weight 114.3 grains. Estimated Value $600-UP.

1783 Washington Draped Bust Cent without Button Restrike in Copper Breen-1193 PCGS graded Proof-64+ Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive mix of light golden brown and silvery steel brown. A choice piece, very close to gem. The only marks are a small, faint swipe of slightly darker chocolate brown toning low on the neck and a small spot of dark toning in the field at the end of the hair ribbon. Very sharply struck. The fields are closer to frosty than reflective. These restrikes were produced by W. J. Taylor in London circa 1860, and they come with a center-grained edge that can be viewed in the special PCGS holder. PCGS population 1 with 46 finer. Estimated Value $800-UP.

1791 Washington Cent. Large eagle. PCGS graded AU-50 (PCGS # 702) . Estimated Value $850 - 900.

1793/2 Washington Ship Halfpenny with Lettered Edge Breen-1225 NGC graded AU details, improperly cleaned. Cleaned and retoned glossy steel and chocolate with traces of very faded reddish steel toning in some of the protected areas on both sides. The only mark is a thin planchet lamination slanting through the top of Washington's head to the rim at each end. This pre-striking planchet flaw is the only mark on an otherwise attractive piece. Early die state showing traces of the 3 over 2 overdate feature and only minor swelling on the reverse. Estimated Value $200-UP.

(1815-20) Washington Double Head Cent Breen-1204. PCGS graded EF-45. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown. Smooth and mark-free except for a few rim nicks on both sides, the strongest of these right of Washington's shoulder on the "CENT" side. Estimated Value $200-UP.

1796 Castorland Demi Ecu Medal, Restrike with Reeded Edge in Copper, Breen-1063. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown CAC Approved. A beautiful restrike from the original dies. Glossy light olive brown. Sharply struck, and there is evidence of having been struck at least 3 times with multiple outlines in the dentils and on some of the legends. No spots or stains, and the only marks are two barely visible scratches in the dentils above the A in AMERICANA. The bulge and die crack through the S in PARENS is clear. Estimated Value $150-UP.

Sharply struck and choice except for a splash of very fine corrosion on the E in AMERICANA. One of only 45 examples struck in brass circa 1861 by Alfred S. Robinson of Hartford, Connecticut. 1787 Fugio Cent Newman 3-D Rarity-3 Club Rays Type VF25. Sharpness EF40 but covered with uniform extremely fine granularity. No verdigris, and the only mark is a shallow planchet void on the outer edge of ring number 9 on the reverse. Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate. An attractive example in spite of the imperfect surfaces. Nicely struck slightly off center to K-12. 1787 Fugio Cent Newman 16-N Rarity-3 NGC graded Fine Details, environmental damage. A STATES UNITED type. Slightly glossy two-tone dark chocolate brown and olive with light chocolate brown toning covering the devices. The contrast accents the designs and adds to the eye appeal, which is decent for the grade. No marks or planchet defects, but there is extremely fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. Later die state, Newman state c, with strong die cracks on the reverse. The date and legends are complete and easily readable except for weakness on a couple letters of STATES. 1793 C-4 R3 Liberty Cap ANACS graded VF details, corroded. Sharpness near VF30 but covered with uniform moderate corrosion. 1797 C-2 R3 VG10. Sharpness near VF30 but the rim has been filed all the way around, apparently to remove or minimize several rim nicks. In addition there is a small dent on the nose and a larger one in the field to the right near the dentils causing a barely perceptible bend in the planchet. A speck of verdigris shows over the M in AMERICA but the remainder of the planchet is free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. The date and legends are bold. 1829 C-1 R1 MS63. Highly lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with tiny puffs of darker olive brown toning on the right side of the obverse and hints of light bluish steel overtone in some of the protected areas. Great eye appeal. MDS. Estimated Value $500-UP.

1835 C-1 R1. NGC graded EF-40. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty bluish steel and chocolate with traces of golden tan in protected areas. No roughness or notable marks, only light wear. MDS, Manley state 2.0. Our grade is net VF25. Estimated Value $60-UP. Provenance: Ex Superior 1/30/84:46.

1837 Half Cent Hard Times Token, Low-49 Rulau HT-73 R2 AU50. Choice frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Just a few trivial marks from flawless. A couple small spots of darker toning near the dentils above the eagle are the only notable defects. These tokens are the only half-cent denominated pieces struck as part of the so-called Hard Times Token series. They were not issued by the Federal government, but they are often collected as part of the Federal half cent series and are included in the "Redbook." Estimated Value $150-UP. 1856 C-1 R2 AU55. A sharply struck mint state example that was dipped and has retoned lustrous golden brown and light chocolate with underlying golden tan peeking through in protected areas. There is a splash of darker olive brown toning between stars 3 & 4 and a smaller one on the nostril. MDS, Manley state 2.0. The remainder of the date is weak but easily readable and the legends are complete except for the U in UNITED, which is faint. No verdigris, and the only signs of contact are a few small, light rim bruises on both sides. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with slightly lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. 1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA VG7. Several points sharper but covered with moderate granularity and fine roughness under a rather glossy patina of chocolate brown mixed with some reddish chocolate tones, mostly on the reverse. 1793 S-3 R3- Chain AMERICA G5. The details suggest a slightly higher grade, especially on the obverse, but the right side of the reverse is covered with tiny planchet voids (as struck) that weaken STATES. The date, LIBERTY, and portrait are complete and easily readable. The legends and devices on the reverse are weaker but remain readable except for the first S in STATES, which is gone thanks to the tiny voids. Glossy steel and dark chocolate brown. There is a spot of very fine corrosion on the I in LIBERTY, a short mark on the jaw, and a few light rim bruises on both sides. Not perfect but overall rather nice for a Chain Cent at this grade level. MDS with clear die clashmarks on the obverse. Holmes #1797. Estimated Value $4,000-UP. 1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent ANACS graded VF details, corroded with rim damage. Sharpness VF25 but lightly corroded on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Traces of shallow reddish verdigris can be found in protected areas on the reverse, but it take a good glass to find any. Numerous very small pits are scattered over the obverse, mostly on the upper half. The only notable contact mark is a rim dent at UN in UNITED, but this is hard to see in the slab. The date and legends are complete and strong. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter chocolate toning on the devices. Possibly lightly cleaned and retoned. Looks better than it might sound, but it is far from perfect. Our grade is net VG8. Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent G5. Several points sharper but covered with fine roughness on all but the highpoints, which are mostly smooth. No verdigris or notable marks. 1793 S-6 R3 Wreath Cent NGC graded Fine details, corrosion. Sharpness VG10 overall, better on the reverse, but moderate roughness covers all but the highpoints on both sides. No verdigris or contact marks. Slightly glossy steel brown and chocolate blending to olive brown in protected areas. The date is mostly invisible due to the roughness but LIBERTY is readable and the legends on the reverse are clear. Our grade is net G4. Estimated Value $800-UP.

1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap G6. Glossy dark chocolate brown. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals extremely faint roughness under the glossy patina in the fields and protected areas on both sides. No verdigris, and the only marks are some faint, very old hairline scratches in the obverse fields and a short vertical scratch on the upper half of the neck, plus a very light rim bruise at TA in STATES. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for weakness on ONE CENT. A very nice Liberty Cap 1793 cent for the grade in spite of the minor imperfections. Holmes #3545. 1793 S-13 R4- Liberty Cap AG3. Sharpness at least VG7 but covered with light to moderate corrosion on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Traces of powdery light green verdigris show in protected areas on the left side of the reverse, and there are a few old, very dull scratches hidden in the toning on the upper two-thirds of the reverse. The toning is a mixture of chocolate brown, light greenish olive, and darker reddish chocolate brown. The smooth highpoints on both sides display some natural gloss. 1793 Gallery Mint Replica of a Liberty Cap Cent, Double Struck, MS67. Lustrous bright mint red. Virtually flawless. Double struck. The initial strike was properly centered while the second was 60% off center to K-11. Both dates are strong. The word "COPY" is stamped into the top of the wreath of the first strike. 1794 S-26 R2 NGC graded Fine details, tooled. Glossy chocolate fading to darker olive brown in protected areas. The surfaces are uneven in the fields and protected areas but smooth on the highpoints. No verdigris, and the only significant marks are some old scratches hidden in the patina on the upper part of the obverse and a rim bruise at the second A in AMERICA. The date and legends are easily readable except for LIBERTY and the denominator, which are faint. E-MDS. 1794 S-65 R1 G4. A couple points sharper, especially on the obverse, but there is a punchmark in the field under the cap and a few rim nicks on the obverse. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the color is a very attractive glossy light chocolate brown with olive toning in protected areas. The date is bold. LDS with swelling and die cracks on the reverse. Estimated Value $150-UP.

1795 S-73 R5- Lettered Edge Fair-2. Blundered Edge Lettering. A couple points sharper but there are two deep punchmarks in the field before the portrait and two more in the field under the cap. In addition there are traces of very fine roughness on the reverse and some hairline scratches hidden in the patina on both sides. Rather glossy olive brown with lighter chocolate covering the legends and devices. The date is strong and at least two-thirds of the reverse legends can be made out. LDS, Breen state IV. 1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 AG3. Sharpness G6 but there is a large and rather deep dent or series of closely-spaced dents on the reverse at F-A extending down to the E in ONE. These dents were strong enough to create a bulge at the opposing area above the tip of the bust. There are a few additional contact marks on both sides but they are not significant at this grade level. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth as fine roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. The date is complete except for the bottom of the 7, and the overdate remains visible. The legends are easily readable except for the first A in AMERICA, which was obliterated by the strong marks in that area. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning covering the highpoints. This cent comes with an important story. It was attributed by Dick Punchard as the extremely rare 1799 NC-1 die variety shortly after he purchased it for $40 as an unattributed 1799 cent in Sarasota, Florida, on 2/17/1977. This attribution was confirmed by Del Bland who graded it G5 net AG3 and he included the listing in his census of known examples contained in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Large Cents 1793-1814. Likewise, Bill Noyes confirmed this as an NC-1 and listed it in his census as VG7 net Fair-2, his photo #25536. In their defense, the usual attribution point for the NC-1 variety was completely obliterated by the damage. Nonetheless, the coin was accepted as an NC-1 and sold to Dan Holmes by Dick Punchard for $6500 on 10/25/1991. Several years later Bob Grellman examined the coin while preparing lot descriptions for the eventual sale of Dan's primary collection (see our 4 Holmes sales of 2009 and 2010) and concluded the cent was the more-common S-188 variety. This placed Dan in the unenviable position of needing to fill the very difficult NC-1 hole in his collection. Fortunately the finest known example became available in the Wes Rasmussen sale in January 2005, and Dan was able to acquire it to fill the hole. Comes with the original Punchard collection envelope annotated by Dan Holmes plus an attribution and grading card prepared by Del Bland on 6/22/92 confirming this as the NC-1 die variety graded G5 net AG3. 1800 S-211 R3 NGC graded VG details, corrosion. Off Center. Sharpness F12 but covered with uniform moderate granularity. No notable marks or verdigris. The date and legends are bold. Dark steel brown with a couple small patches of reddish brown on the reverse. MDS, Breen state IV. Struck 5% off center to K-2 leaving the tops of ERTY and ICA off the planchet. Not especially attractive but a neat error with sharp details. Our grade is net G4. The Off Center Mint Error feature is noted on the NGC label. Estimated Value $100-UP. 1802 S-239 R3 G6. Very slightly sharper but lightly cleaned and retoned bluish steel and light olive brown with lighter brown and chocolate toning on highpoints. No notable marks or verdigris, but the surfaces do show extremely fine roughness in the fields and protected areas. LDS, Breen state V early. The date and legends are clear. Estimated Value $50-UP.

1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath with Doubled Fraction Bar VF25. Five points sharper but there are traces of microscopic roughness in protected areas on the reverse. No verdigris, and the only notable contact marks are a very light hairline scratch above and another below CEN in CENT. A very shallow low spot (caused by debris, most likely grease, on the die) extends from the drapery at the base of the neck to the field before the lips with a couple similar low spots under AME on the reverse. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with traces of lighter brown toning around the wreath, possibly from a very old cleaning. The obverse offers excellent eye appeal. Terminal die state, Breen state V, with strong cud breaks at TY and to the right. The Stemless Wreath and Doubled Fraction Bar features are obvious. Noyes photo # ANS1217. This is a nice cent and it comes with an important story. This is one of the pieces "switched-in" by Dr. Sheldon when he exchanged coins with the Clapp-ANS collection decades ago. The original Clapp-ANS cent that was taken by Dr. Sheldon was recently returned to the ANS, and the ANS graciously exchanged it for this piece (ANS inventory number 0000.4.103). It comes with a letter from the Deputy Director of the ANS, Andrew Meadows, documenting the exchange and releasing their claim to its title. So here is an opportunity to obtain a nice example of a popular die variety that was part of the infamous "Clapp-ANS-Sheldon exchange." Estimated Value $500-UP. The highpoints are a rather glossy light brown while the protected areas are dark olive. The date and legends are complete and bold. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. Like so many of the Holmes cents, this one comes with a "story." The highpoints of this cent are toned a distinctly lighter shade for a reason. Dan carried this cent in his pocket for most of 2004, and he would show it to people he met so they could see a 200-year-old US cent. 1804 S-266c R2 NGC graded AG details, environmental damage and cleaned. Sharpness near G4 but microscopic granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides. No marks or verdigris. Retoned a slightly glossy dark steel with slightly lighter steel brown toning on some of the obverse highpoints. LDS, Breen state IV, with cud breaks at RTY and MERIC. The strike is uneven, as usual for the late state, leaving the left edge of the reverse very weak while the right side is strong. The date is weak but complete and easily readable. 1804 Restrike NGC graded Unc details, environmental damage. Frosty reddish brown and chocolate mixed with swipes of darker olive and steel toning on both sides. There are no marks, traces of verdigris, or other "environmental damage" unless unattractive toning can be classified as such. Just the slightest touch of friction on the highpoints from mint state. Late die state with strong die cracks on the obverse and extensive die rust lumps on both sides. Our grade is net AU50. Estimated Value $400-UP. Provenance: Ex Superior 6/3/85:68.

1805 S-267 R1 F15. Ten points sharper but there are a few contact marks on otherwise smooth, attractive surfaces. Extremely rare late die state with an internal cud break connecting stars 3-5, and the section outside the cud is sunken slightly as a retained cud break. In the terminal state, the internal cud is fully raised under star 5 while that area is only partially raised on this example. 1835 N-8 R1 Head of 1836 EF45. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. A beautiful cent, essentially flawless. Looks mint state. 1835 N-12 R4 Head of 1834 F12. Slightly sharper but the toning is a bit blotchy, especially on the obverse. No roughness or significant marks. 1835 N-13 R4 Head of 1834 VF35. Ten points sharper but cleaned and retoned a rather blotchy mix of light chocolate brown and dark steel. No marks other than a few very tiny rim nicks over the first A in AMERICA. MDS with an arc of clashmarks from impressed dentils above ONE but before the narrow rim cuds at D-S and ST. The obverse fields are smooth and rather reflective while the reverse is frosty from having been used in no less than three earlier die marriages (1835 N-18 and N-12 and 1831 N-2). I suspect this cent would benefit from a proper recoloring to eliminate the uneven toning and improve the eye appeal. It may be high enough in the condition census to warrant such an effort. 1836 N-5 R3 EF40. Upset Reverse. The obverse is glossy chocolate and olive brown while the reverse is a lighter shade of frosty light steel brown with hints lighter toning faded down from mint color in a few places. There are some extremely faint contact marks hidden in the glossy toning in the obverse fields but the reverse is choice and looks closer to AU50. LDS. The fine die cracks on the reverse are clear and the reverse is upset oriented head-to-head rather than the usual head-to-foot. Holmes #0855. Estimated Value $150-UP. 1837 N-9 R1 Beaded Hair Cord MS60+. Frosty light chocolate and steel with hints of bluish steel overtone. Peeps of faded mint red show on both sides. Sharply struck and quite attractive, close to choice. The only notable defect is a tiny rim nick at the U in UNITED. M-LDS with several die cracks on the obverse and tiny but clearly defined rim cud breaks above star 4 and right of star 11. A very nice cent. In addition there are traces of fine verdigris or crud caked into many of the protected areas, especially on the reverse. Perhaps a bath is warranted since the crud appears to be soft. Glossy chocolate brown with slightly lighter steel brown highpoints. MDS, die state b, with a strong, clearly defined rim cud from star 7 to star 8. 1850 N-11 R3 EF45. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate. Smooth and attractive. The only mark is a spot of darker toning in the field under the hair bun. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a late. 1850 N-12 R1 MS65. Lustrous mint red just starting to mellow to light steel brown on the highest points, about 90% of the mint color remaining. No notable marks or other defects. A small spot of steel toning at the dentil tips between the tip of the wreath ribbon and the adjacent U is a good identifying mark. M-LDS, die state b early. The point from the left side of the C in CENT is short but remains visible and the tiny lump on the rim over the right edge of the D in UNITED is present. A beautiful, totally original cent. 1855 N-4 R1 Upright 55. PCGS graded MS-64 Red CAC Approved. Bright original mint red with highly lustrous surfaces, at least 90% of the original red color remaining. The only breaks in the bright red color are a subtle swipe of steel brown toning on the cheek and hints of similar light steel toning on the highest points of the wreath. The best identifying marks are a tiny tick on the upper edge of the ear and a microscopic speck of dark steel toning near the dentils over the left edge of the O in OF. Nicely struck EDS, die state a, prior to any die cracks or rim cud breaks on the reverse. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. Estimated Value $800-UP.

1855 N-4 R1 Upright 55. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Slightly lustrous light steel brown and chocolate with underlying faded mint color bleeding through in the fields and protected areas. Possibly dipped long ago and retoned. No spots or other defects. Nicely struck EDS, die state a (the usual hoard die state). Our grade is MS60. Estimated Value $200-UP.

1856 N-22 R5 Italic 5 VF20. Very slightly sharper with a very light scratch from the chin to the bottom of star 4. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive with only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. Glossy light olive and steel brown with subtle overtones of light bluish steel and sea green. Pair of NGC graded Cents, 1843 & 1853. Includes 1843 N-15 R3 NGC graded AU55 and 1853 N-6 R1 NGC graded EF45. The first is frosty steel and dark chocolate, EF45 sharpness net EF40 for extremely faint roughness. The second was cleaned and retoned frosty bluish steel and olive with some reddish brown on the reverse and frosty tan in protected areas, EF40 sharpness net VF30. Group of 8 Postcards from Walter Breen postmarked in 1959. Each card is addressed to an acquaintance in Beverly Hills, California. The cards are typed and signed by Walter, and the postmarks range from late 1958 to September 1959. On them he discusses a variety of topics, including his new book on US Half Cents, tips on cleaning and storing coins, and dishing the dirt on a few prominent coin dealers of the day.
