Due to this, the "ghostly" memory of his lost sibling was to haunt him for the rest of his life. Dali took on a unique and conspicuous personality. He felt as though he was forced to live both as himself and his dead brother, which caused him to have a particular obsession with decay and petrification. In 1922 Dali was accepted into a special school for painting, sculpture, and engraving known as the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid. He exhibits his paintings in a student art show at the Dalmau gallery in Barcelona. A year later, Dali was suspended from the academy for criticizing his lecturers and inciting a student rebellion. At the age of 18, Dali had become a member of the young elite, an emerging group of intellectuals. In 1923, Dali first started to experiment with cubism. He became a leader of an avant-garde group of young Spanish intellectuals. He has his first one man show in the same year at the Dalmau Gallery.In 1926 Dali takes his first trip to Brussels and Paris where he visits Picasso and Miro. He also has his second one man show at the Dalamu Gallery and is expelled from the San Fernando Academy due to his refusal to take the oral exams. He felt that he knew more than his examiners on the subject of Raphael. Far from discouraged, Dali was determined to be one of the greatest painters of all time. In 1928 Dali does theater designs for Mariana Pineda and he works regularly with the journal, L'Aime de les Arts. Miro visits Dali and encourages him to establish himself in Paris. Shortly after, Dali takes his second trip to Paris and Miro introduces him to the Dadaists and Surrealists groups.In 1929 he meets his future wife, Gala Eluard in Cadaques. This same year he has his first one man show in Paris at Goeman's Gallery. Dali embraced the ideas of surrealism but in a way unique to him. By moving south on the line to the Angle where hand to hand combat took place and by showing the stone wall, I believe the scene is easily identifiable as Gettysburg to the knowledgeable collector. * Most of the flags shown in this painting are standard Confederate battle flags, with the 9th Virginia Infantry seen in the center and the 56th Virginia Infantry found in the background. To the right, is the regimental flag of the 72nd Pennsylvania and the state issue flag of the 71st Pennsylvania. The 72nd was a semi-zouave regiment, but had lost most of their distinctive uniform by this time. The only remnants were the low, white canvas gaiters containing four buckles on each side. These can be seen on two of the soldiers in the right background. Soon after, his family moved to New York City, and in 1927 Moskowitz became the pupil of Henry Wickey at the Art Students League, having finally resolved his conflict between a passion for drawing and a desire to follow the rabbinical profession of his forefathers. Between 1935 and 1938, he traveled to Israel and to Europe where he studied the works of the old masters, an interest derived from his first teacher and one that eventually led to his active collaboration in 1954 on the four-volume series, "Great Drawings of All Time." * In 1939, Moskowitz made his first trip to Mexico, and stayed for six months. In 1943 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship and moved to New Mexico, where he remained for seven years drawing the Indians and becoming an active member of the Taos-Sante Fe artists group. His book, "Patterns and Ceremonials of the Indians of the Southwest," appeared in 1949. Since 1962, Moskowitz has divided his time between Paris and New York. Toulouse-Lautrec observed and captured in his art the Parisian nightlife of the period. * Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on Nov. 24, 1864, in Albi, France. He was an aristocrat, the son and heir of Comte Alphonse-Charles de Toulouse and last in line of a family that dated back a thousand years. Henri's father was rich, handsome, and eccentric. His mother was overly devoted to her only living child. Henri was weak and often sick. A giant by almost every measurement, the B-36 was a unique aircraft for its time. With a design laid out in the midst of the war years, the B-36 was an engineering and manufacturing marvel when compared to the typical WWII bomber. At 163 feet the B-36 fuselage was a long a a B-29 and B-17 placed nose to tail and the 230 foot wing span was more than twice that of the B-24. the tip of the rudder was 46 feet 10 inches off the ground, almost the length of the B-25. With six P&W R4360 piston engines and four GE J-47 jet engines, the mammoth bomber could fly at more than 43,000 feet with a top speed of 418 mph. With fuel weapons and a crew of 16 men, the maximum weight of the bomber reached 410,000 pounds. Typical of the rapid pace of technological developments of the time the B-36 Peacemaker had a relatively short operational life, with the last model being retired in early 1959. Of the 325 B-36's that were built only four examples exist today. This is a L/E print of 1000 copies and is signed by the artist and personally autographed by the pilot, Retired Convair Test Pilot Beryl Erickson. In probably the most critical test of the as yet untried Space Shuttle, the orbiter "Enterprise" is released from its highly modified 747 carrier aircraft for its approach and landing test in actual flight configuration. Without the streamlined tailcone used on previous test flights there would be increased buffeting on the 747 shuttle carrier and the descent profile fo the orbiter would be much steeper. At 20,300 feet shuuttle pilot Joe Engle released the orbiter from the carrier and NASA 747 pilot Fitz Fulton banked the Jumbo steeply away from the orbiter. Previous tests with the tailcone installed had required 5 1/2 minuts for the orbitor to reach their Edwards runway but today that descent took only 2 minutes and 34 seconds. This is an L/E of 850 prints and is personally signed by artist and autographed by Shuttle pilot Major General Joe H. Engle and Shuttle Carrier Command pilot Fitzhugh L. "Fitz" Fulton. This is an image of famed Imperial Japanese Navy fighter ace Saburo Sakai in one of several Mitsubishi A6M2 Type 21 Zeroes he flew early in the War while in the Tainan Fighter Group. Although credited with over 60 aerial victories, Japan S most famous fighter ace Ensign Saburo Sakai, IJN took greatest pride in never losing a wingman. Completing flight training in 1937, he saw combat in China, the Philippines, and the Southwest Pacific. On 7 August 1942, he was wounded by SBD fire and barely made it back to base. He recovered to train other Japanese pilots and to fight again at Iwo Jima and over Tokyo. Here Sakai is depicted in one of the many Mitsubishi Type Zero carrier fighters, it's markings representative of those if the Tainan Kokutai during much of 1942. On March 9, 1916 Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa and 500 of his Villistas attacked the border town of Columbus, New Mexico. the United States responded by immediately dispatching U.S. Army forces under the command of General John J. "Blackjack" Pershing to avenge the border penetration and capture the bandit Villa. Pershing deployed eight Curtiss JN-2s of the First Aero Squadron for use as scouts in the mountainous Mexican territory to which Villa and his men had fled. This is a L/E print of 750 and is personally signed by the artist. It has never been mounted and is in perfect condition. In 1991, I accepted a commission from the U.S. Army War College to paint Raise the Colors and Follow Me! It showed General Thomas Francis Meagher and the Irish Brigade charging the Sunken Road at Antietam. For this Irish Brigade picture, I selected a Fredericksburg scene. * * * The Federal army arrived on the north side of the Rappahannock River across from Fredericksburg on November 17, 1862. The men believed there would be no more fighting that year and began building winter quarters on November 29th and since I enjoy painting snow scenes , I knew the picture had to take place sometime after this date. I planned to feature the famous 69th New York but the regiment had no green flag during the battle of Fredericksburg. Tattered and torn from previous fighting, it had been returned to New York to be replaced. Happily, I found that the colors were not retired until December 2nd, so the distinctive and colorful flag would still be present in my painting. I contacted Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. at Virginia Tech for weather conditions and learned there was a clearing and warning trend that day. The color guard and officers of the 69th arrived at the Brigade headquarters of General Meagher for the official return of the colors. Colonel Robert Nugent points out to General Meagher the spot where the long-awaited pontoons, which arrived on November 26th, have been placed. Other well known members of the 69th are Capt. John H. Donovan (on horseback to the left with the patch over his right eye) and Major James Cavenaugh (the officer on Donovan's immediate left). Capt. Dennis Sullivan is standing at the far right. The man immediately behind him is the Rev. William Corby, who was Chaplain of the 88th NY. * * * The green regimental flag still exists today, as do the ribbons. The tears and bullet holes are based on the actual flag. An interesting note is that it says 1st regiment on the flag and not the 69th because the 69th NY was the first regiment of the Irish Brigade. The white and red headquarters flag shows it to be the flag of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. according to General Order 102 of the Army of the Potomac of 24th March 1862. The white marker with the gold 69th NYSV also still exists. * * * These tattered remnants of Irish valor, the regimental colors, were returned to New York and replaced in a formal ceremony with new flags. The brigade's carpenters built a large log hall in their winter encampment to hold the festivities which were scheduled for December 13th. General Burnside had other plans. The battle started that day, and the Irish Brigade made the deadly assault on Marye's Heights with green sprigs of boxwood in their hats in place of the missing flags. * Flag expert Howard Michael Madaus was of immeasurable help in my research. So was Ken Powers, the official historian of the 69th Regiment NY. Other historians who helped insure the accuracy of this painting were Frank O'Reilly of Fredericksburg National Military Park, Matt Kelly, Tom Duclose of the NY Military History Museum, Paul fowler, Steven Sylvia, and Rod Gragg. * --Mort Kunstler

Making landfall after a long patrol, the No. 6 boat of VP-91 heads home to Southern Cross Airfield, Barking Sands, Kauai, Territory of Hawaii, in May 1942. This sign was made during the original production of the motion picture The Color Purple. * It was displayed at the production studio, and also at the premier. The sign is all wood, and hand-painted, with the famous logo, and image. The size itself really lets it stand out, at 48 x 71 inches. It stands out even more with the addition of another separate panel on the main panel, where the image is. The silhouetted figure on the rocker appears in dark purple, with a deep yellow background. Actual purple lace frames the scene, adding a touch of depth and realism. This panel measures 40 x 40 inches. * The sign is in very good condition overall. There are 10 small holes around the near the edges where it was affixed to a wall. There is some paint wear, mostly on the yellow surface, and one spot of lace wear. These are common features on a promotional item, and they don't take away from the wonderful impression this sign makes. This is a unique piece of movie history. By Late 1944 there were 23 RAF squadrons operating Typhoons from bases on the continent and the aircraft played a major role in defeating the German army in the west by roaming the skies over the enemy. This print shows the fire power of the Typhoon as Squadron Leader Marten T.S. Rumbold leads his renegades in an attack on an enemy vehicle Repair Depot in Doetinchem, Holland, on March 19, 1945. This L/E of 1000 is personally signed by the artist and comes with a COA that is suitable for framing. This print has never been mounted and is in perfect condition. The image measures 20" x 15".

In the following year he held exhibitions at the Haifa Municipal Museum, the Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem, the Artist's House in Haifa, and Jerusalem, the Chermerinsky Gallery in Tel Aviv, and other places. In 1962 he began to teach drawing at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. In 1925 a group of London "men about town" formed a Reserve Squadron of light bombers flying from Hendon. Nine years later the unit was re-quipped with fighters. Known as the "Weekend Warriors" the pilots trained in their spare time. As war approached, the unit mobilized into Fighter command, RAF, fighting with equal distinction alongside their regular comrades. First Lt. Carl H. Fritsche levels his fuel-laden Consolidated B-24 Liberator, nicknamed "The Crusader," between cloud decks over a valley in the Himalaya Mountains between India and China. Unable to climb above the high mountain peaks because of their heavy loads, the B-24 crews relied on the skills of their navigators to guide them through the valleys and more often than not, through terrible weather (Over the HUMP.) Fritsche and his crew made 48 successful Hump flights carrying vital fuel supplies for General Claire Chennault's aircraft. Fritsche's Squadron, the 492nd Bomb Squadron of the 10th USAAF, was temporarily assigned to Chennault's 14th USAAF in China during the period of August and September 1944. * The print measures 33.25" x 16.5" and the paper trims out at 36" x 20.5".
