(22.9 x 33 cm) signed Provenance: Masters Gallery, Calgary; Antoine's Art Gallery, Montreal Lake St. Charles is frequently featured in the paintings of the artist. Krieghoff moved to Quebec City in 1853, and the following decade was a happy and productive time. Lake St. Charles, situated 13 km north of Quebec City, was a favourite hunting and fishing area, and was also well-frequented by families. Thus, it provided idyllic imagery to the artist, who loved to paint the local people engaged in their activities and the scenery. This painting depicts Major F. Robinson of the Scots Guard, in his distinctive white hat, canoeing on the lake. References: "Cornelius Krieghoff" (Hughes de Jouvancourt). Paintings of Lake St. Charles subject matter are reproduced pp. 92, 115 and 121. "Krieghoff" (J. Russell Harper). A reference to this location can be found on p. 113, with comparable examples illustrated pp. 115, 119 and 149.
