A Hittite / Egyptian Stone Bull's Head - ex Christie's
Hittite, but found in Egypt (reputedly in Mit Rahinah near Memphis), dating to the Late 2nd millennium B.C. This is a magnificent head of a bull, made of black stone, rendered in a slightly stylized way with short, tapering horns, long ears, large oval eyes with multiple ridges above them and a slightly open mouth, displaying the teeth. The back of the head is flat but from the composition it is clear that the animal had a massive and strong neck. Of note, one of the main gods in the Hittite pantheon was the weather and storm god Teshub. The bull, always a symbol of strength and fertility himself and also being associated with roar and thunder and with the storm, was the sacred animal of the storm god. Sometimes there were two bulls, carrying the god or pulling his chariot as he travelled across the mountains. These bulls, called Sheri and Hurri, were not only considered divine, but received offerings themselves. It is known that statues of bulls, standing on altars or pedestals, were worshipped. Custom mount. Head itself measures 3-1/2"L (9 cm) x just under 3"W (7.5 cm) x 3-1/2"H (9 cm); with base 7-1/2"H (19 cm), intact with only some minimal damage to the underside neck, just above the base. The representation of a broad collar called an Usekh (also called an Aegis, originally a Greek term for "shield") surmounted with the head of a deity functioned as a protective symbol. An Egyptian Faience Djed Pillar Amulet
Dating to Egypt's Third Intermediate Period, approximately 1070-712 B.C. Of typical simple form with pale blue glaze, with exquisite and crisp detailing. The djed pillar amulet was one of the most common of all those placed on the mummy, and can perhaps be understood as the backbone of Osiris, or that of the deceased associated with him. The Egyptians recognized the importance of the spine and saw it as a symbol that kept Osiris, the resurrected god, intact and able to function. Spell 151e of the Book of the Dead refers to the djed-pillar amulet as “the magical protection of Osiris,” and spell 155 was recited over this amulet as it was placed on the throat of a mummy. As a hieroglyph, the djed-pillar denotes the more abstract concepts of stability, endurance, and rejuvenation. A number of them could be strung around the lower torso, or placed singly on the upper chest or around the neck. Much larger than most at 2-1/2"H, intact/excellent condition. Hollow-cast Very finely rendered lady with hair drawn up into a bun behind her head and wearing chiton and himation which she grasps at hip. She is holding a mirror in her left hand. 'Tanagras' are named after the site in Boeotia, central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. The ladies are normally depicted in casual poses and their clothes, which usually consist of a thinner undergarment, the chiton, worn beneath a thicker cloak or himation, are typically pulled and twisted in pleasing patterns which emphasize the form of the figure beneath. Most Tanagra figures are mould made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure even distribution of heat in the firing. After firing, the figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally 'modelers of girls.' 7"H (18 cm), head re-attached, restoration to right arm and minor repair to left side (drape hanging below hand) . A Greek Hellenistic Megarian Bowl - Scarce!
Greece, ca. 2nd century BC. Of fine red clay, mold-made and brown-glazed, the base centered by a rosette, a frieze above depicting garland among which are interspersed dancing goats (certainly a reference to Pan/Satyrs) and large amphorae, above which a continuous band of grape vines compliments the scene. Most of the external surface is covered with relief decoration, including radiating palms and wine cups (kantharoi). Megarian ware was the Greek forerunner to the Roman 'Samian' ware, which was also known as Terra sigillata. During the Hellenistic period (3rd to 1st cent. BC), vessels of chased metals were greatly sought after and potters of the time tried to imitate the form and decoration. The usual decoration would be naturalistic motifs, such as palmettes and rosettes, but sometimes wine cups, animals, cherubs and human figures were also depicted. The usual form of Megarian ware is the small hemispherical bowl with a red, brown or black slip but such bowls are becoming increasingly scarce on the antiquities market. 3-3/8"D x 2-3/8"H, intact/generally excellent, save minor spauling of brown slip around some of the relief decoration.

C. Junius C.F. AR Silver Denarius
A lovely and early Roman Republic Coin! C. Junius C.f. AR Denarius. 149 BC. Helmeted head of Roma r., X behind / The Dioscuri galloping r.; CúIVNIúCúF below, ROMA in exergue. Babelon Junia 1. Sydenham 392. Crawford 210/1. 3.70 g, 18mm. Of note -- The Dioscuri Castor and Pollux were accorded a special place in the Roman collective consciousness and were honored on the city?s coinage for their legendary assistance to the Romans against the Latins and Tarquinius Superbus, the former King of Rome. It was said that during the Battle of Lake Regillus (circa 496 BC) Castor and Pollux were seen at the height of the battle, armed and mounted, fighting at the head of the legions, and that afterwards had carried news of the victory to Rome with far greater alacrity than was possible for any ordinary man. The well at which they had alighted to water their horses was pointed out, and it was on this spot that Aulus Postumius Albinus, dictator for that year and commander of the Roman army, built his avowed temple to the Dioscuri. A great festival was kept to their honor on the Ides of Quintilis, supposed to be the anniversary of the battle, and on that day sumptuous sacrifices were offered to them at the public expense. One spot on the margin of Lake Regillus was regarded throughout many ages with superstitious awe; a mark resembling in shape a horse?s hoof, was discernible in the volcanic rock, and this mark was believed to have been made by one of the celestial chargers. A Roman Oil Lamp w/ Female Gladiator
Rome, ca. 1st Century AD. While the vast majority of Roman gladiators were men, women combatants did exist, often with the same degree of fame afforded their male counterparts. This lamp represents these rare female warriors. Light-tan clay lamp with reddish-brown slip; sunken central discus depicting female helmeted gladiator, carrying shield and mace; incuse concentric banding surrounding; undecorated downward sloping shoulder; voluted channel with rounded nozzle. Maker's name 'L.M.ADIEC' incuse on reverse. According to Tacitus, some noblewomen and senators entered the arena to fight in the amphitheatre games of 63 CE. Dio Cassius reports that in 66 CE, Ethiopian women were introduced into the arena at the munus offered in Pozzuoli (or Puteoli) by Emperor Nero in honor of King Tiridates I of Armenia. Juvenal mentions a female gladiator named "Mevia", who hunted boars in the arena "with spear in hand and breasts exposed". In the Satyricon, Petronius mentions a munus organized by a man named Titus who presented a woman fighting on a cart. During the reign of Emperor Domitian, a munus organized in 89 CE featured female gladiators. In Halicarnassus, a marble relief dated to the 2nd century CE depicts two female combatants bearing the fictional names "Amazon" and "Achillia"; the match ended in a draw. In Ostia, a 2nd century epigraph praises a member of the local elite for being the first to "arm women" in the history of the city's games. The evidence so far indicates that female gladiators fought in accordance with the same regulations adhered to by male gladiators. Also, it was only possible for a woman to fight in a gladiatorial game if she was able to access any form of professional training. Specific to this example, this very fine Roman Oil Lamp from a major workshop depicting a gladiator in combat; however, this style of gladiator is outside the realm of any known ?male? depiction. The subject clearly wears what we would classify as a very flowing skirt with a style that is ?off the shoulder? holding a shield in one hand and type of mace or axe in the other. There can only be one conclusion ? that this does indeed represent the very rare, but well-documented female gladiator. 4"L, intact/excellent condition. Custom stand. Provenance: Ex-Hornbeam Collection.

Although varying greatly in size and shape, the common characteristic of Byzantine bread stamps was the emphasis in drawing fracture lines that indicated to the priest where to cut the loaf. These lines become even more important on Eucharistic stamps that marked the consecrated bread for communion. A Huge 10" Colima Female Figure, Pre-Columbian Mexico
A huge female figure from the ancient Colima, Mexico region, circa 200 B.C. – 200 A.D. This impressive example measures 10" tall (item alone, un-mounted) by 6 1/4" wide, and about 11 1/4" tall mounted on the custom display stand. The figure is that of a standing female with some nicely detailed features. She wears two bracelets on each arm, probably representing the carved shell bracelets known from archaeological contexts, as well as large ear spools and a necklace with pendant. One of her best features is her interesting hair-style and/or hair ornamentation, which looks stylistically similar to an Asian top-knot with elaborate styling on the sides- detailed features such as this are very important in documenting hairstyles and adornment practices among the ancient inhabitants of this region. She is portrayed as having a very exaggerated genital region, which from the side view swells out in a slightly enlarged fashion, with anatomical detail- this is likely symbolically indicative of fertility in general, and/or may even imply early stages of pregnancy since her belly is slightly swollen. Re-glued breaks to both legs with no restoration, as visible in the photos. Minor loss at the feet, and minor chips, abrasions and loss overall. Heavy mineral deposits remain on the surface, attesting to the age and authenticity of this piece. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection, collected pre-1970. This figure depicts an elegant looking, nude female with arms extended outward and downward, possibly in a gesture that once had meaning to the ancient inhabitants of the region. Her features are carefully and finely rendered. She is shown wearing an interesting hairstyle and head dressing, with a long ponytail or tassel extending down her back. She also wears a necklace with a single circular pendant, and what is typically interpreted as ritual scarification / beautification on both shoulders. Intact and in excellent original condition. Otherwise, only minor abrasions, weathering and wear, with heavy mineral and sediment deposits remaining. Provenance: Former Lynn Langdon collection, USA. Collected pre-1970. A Large Pre-Columbian Maya Incised Tripod Vessel w/ Adorno
A fine orangeware Pre-Columbian Maya vessel, circa 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. This vessel is quite large, measuring 8 1/4" tall by about 8" wide, and displays very impressively. The large cylindrical body sits atop three slab type feet, each with carved knot or Mat patterns, or Pop glyphs- such designs typically signify elite status of the owner. The front features a very prominent monkey head adorno, shown wearing large ear spools. This likely represents a howler monkey, based on the rendering. There are also two large incised panels on the left and right exterior, which appear to depict what is possibly a frontal view of Tlaloc or Chac. An alternative interpretation might be that these incised panels depict twin, smoking incensarios. In remarkable condition overall, especially for a vessel of this size, which would typically be prone to significant damage over centuries of burial. The rim of this vessel has a slender restored area measuring about 6" long, tapering to about 2" deep at the deepest part. This area is visible in the photos (looking at the front of the vase, it is on the left top side of the rim), but is quite well done. Otherwise, the vessel is intact and in excellent original condition, with a few minor stable stress lines. One of the slab tripod feet was broken and was simply re-glued into place with no restoration there. There are obvious traces of mineral deposits and root marks inside and out. Provenance: Former Arkansas, USA private collection. This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.

A Large Pre-Columbian Maya Plate, Seated Figure on Bench
A large Maya polychrome tripod plate, circa 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. Museum deaccession. This example measures about 12" across, and includes acrylic display stand, as shown. It features white, yellow, brown, orange and red pigments to depict a finely rendered individual seated upon a bench, who is either receiving or inspecting pottery goods, perhaps for purchase or as gifts/tribute. The fact that the individual is shown seated upon the bench is significant, and implies not only elite status, but also power and authority in Maya iconography- often indicative of a ruler. This important individual is also shown wearing fine clothing and adornments, and body paint/pigment. Bands of glyphs are featured near different items at four separate places in the scene, perhaps serving as descriptive or naming labels for the different items shown. The inner rim of the plate features geometric designs including step-frets. It sits upon three tripod legs and even has decorative banded patterns on the back/underside. This plate was broken in ancient times and has been re-glued from large fragments (best seen from the back), with very little loss in the breaklines. Minor fill has been used where small gaps may have existed in the breaklines. The breaklines do not interfere with the figural portion of the scene in a distracting way. Minor pigment loss, erosion, chipping and abrasions overall. The plate displays impressively as-is, retaining it's archaeological integrity, or it may be professionally restored, if desired. All areas of the figure and the scene retain enough of the original line so that it could easily by touched up by a competent restorer to revitalize the scene, if so desired. Provenance: Ex Arte Primitivo. Museum de-accession, former Pine Crest School Museum collection, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA. This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.
Pre-Columbian
A Pre-Columbian Maya Polychrome Vase, Basket Pattern, Glyphs
A Maya polychrome vase, circa 600 A.D. - 900 A.D. This example measures approximately 6 1/2" tall by about 5" wide. It exhibits polychrome pigments of orange, red, black and white, and features a basket weave pattern surrounding three circular cartouches (or portals) containing serpent-like heads- perhaps representing vision serpents. There is also a band of glyphs around the outer rim displaying what appears to be the Primary Standard Sequence (P.S.S.). These are readable, decipherable glyphs. Maya polychrome vases depicting such basket weave designs are not seen often. In original, unrestored condition with a stabilized stress line extending downward from the rim about 4" on one side, with an adjacent small rim shard (about 1" in size) re-glued into place. Glue has been worked into the stress crack to stabilize it against further spreading. There are also multiple, stable stress lines on the very base of the vessel, one of which extends up from the bottom edge about an inch high up the side. This vessel displays the wear and weathering indicative of Classic Period Maya vessels with ample root marks and mineral deposits attesting to the age and authenticity of the piece. There are minor chips, abrasions, weathering and wear overall, with some pigment loss, especially near the bottom and to areas of white pigment (which are particularly vulnerable to erosion). Provenance: Former private Florida, USA collection. Before that, ex Arte Primitivo. This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.

A Fine Maya / Mayan Peten Bowl
From ancient Mexico, Mayan, Peten region, ca. 500 to 800 AD. Extremely fine and rare polychrome pottery bowl depicting the three failed attempts to create human beings - as published in the Maya Popol Vuh. ]From the Introduction of Dennis Tedlock’s translation of the Popol Vuh: "For the gods, the idea of human beings is as old as that of the earth itself, but they fail in their first three attempts (all in Part One of the present translation) to transform this idea into a living reality. What they want is beings who will walk, work, and talk in an articulate and measured way, visiting shrines, giving offerings, and calling upon their makers by name, all according to the rhythms of a calendar. What they get instead, on the first try, is beings who have no arms to work with and can only squawk (the bird with beak), chatter, and howl, (the monkey – hind legs and tail) and whose descendants are the animals of today. On the second try they make a being they make a being of mud (the brown back of the composite creature) , but this one is unable to walk or turn its head or even keep its shape being solitary, it cannot reproduce itself, and in the end it dissolves in nothing. Before making a third try, the gods decide, in the course of a further dialogue, to seek the counsel of... The question the younger gods put to them here is whether human beings should be made out of wood (the front legs)...” 6-1/4"D x,4"H small pressure crack, else intact and excellent. A Pre-Columbian Huari / Wari Ritual Watering Vessel
A relatively rare type of vessel known as a Paccha (ritual watering device/vessel) from the ancient Huari (also spelled Wari) culture of Pre-Columbian Peru, circa 650 A.D. – 800 A.D. This fine example measures approximately 4 1/2” tall by about 4” wide (item alone, at widest points), and includes the acrylic display ring, as shown. This vessel displays decorative and symbolic motifs associated with Huari/Wari style, rendered in brown/black and white pigment against a burnt orange colored slip. The bulbous body features a smaller top portion that resembles the shape of a small bowl, while an open, tapering spout emerges at an angle at the bottom of one side. Such objects are believed to have been used as ritual watering devices, into which liquids were poured and allowed to slowly seep out into the ground through the bottom spout. It is typically assumed that water may have been ritually offered is such vessels, but chemical analyses on some examples have revealed traces of maize beer (Chicha), instead of water. If water was the offered substance, such offerings were likely an effort to ensure rain and/or successful crop growth. If Chicha or Maize beer was offered rather than water (as some examples suggest), the offering may have been considered the completion of a full cycle; the finished product of Maize crops being returned as an offering to a newly prepared field to ensure a successful crop and thus sustained future Chicha production. Alternatively, ritual use of these vessels may have had a broader purpose related to the concept fertility in general. One could interpret a suggestion of fertility in general, in that the vessel itself symbolically embodies and exhibits both “male” and “female” aspects, through the representation of the protruding spout at the bottom (male) and opening at the top (female), respectively. Intact, with only minor, small chipping and abrasions to the rim and spout. Otherwise, minor wear and weathering overall, expected on an authentic, ancient example. Some light mineral and sediment deposits remain on the original burnished surface. Provenance: Former Indiana, USA collection. This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.

Pre-Columbian, Tairona, ca. 500 – 1000 AD. A hollow-molded terracotta statuette depicting a standing male figure; he wears an elaborate headdress with a central disc and an equally elaborate costume with belts, arm bands and sashes, all of which are decorated with geometric patterns. His costume probably indicates that he is a cacique or chieftain. With his left hand he holds a musical instrument to his mouth - an ocarina. Most interestingly, the whole statuette itself functions as an ocarina! The top of the head has a small blow hole, and several holes on the body of the figure, when covered or uncovered with the finger tips, allow to lower and raise the pitch. A fantastic whistle that still plays after all those years! 7-1/2”H (19cm), in excellent condition; some encrustation and surface wear; a minuscule chip to the back of the headdress. There is a very thin line on one of the arms, only visible under magnification. An old inventory number written under one of the feet. A Jalisco Figure Vessel, Pre-Columbian West Mexico
A rare and desirable type of vessel incorporating a distinct figural type, from the ancient Jalisco region of Pre-Columbian West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 300 A.D. This piece is sizable, and measures approximately 9" tall X 7 1/2" wide X 6 1/2" deep. This represents a well-known, but rarely seen type of Jalisco figure/vessel, often described as depicting a "mourner". These are very distinct from other Jalisco renderings of individuals, in that the figure is always shown with their tongue protruding, and often the head has a ring-like shape on top. They typically have long, stringy arms, and are shown slumped over looking very despondent and lethargic. While this may depict a mourning figure, as some suggest, it may instead depict an individual with some kind of distinct illness or abnormality, since the features are very symptom-like and are so consistent for the type. The vessel is incorporated into the human form so masterfully on this example that it is easy to take for granted. But paying attention to the detailed volume of the body, and the way it seamlessly gives way to the vessel/container, it is a remarkable example of ancient art. This is one of those pieces that when the light hits it right, it captivates and really stands out amongst other things, drawing the viewer in for a closer look- it is compelling and exudes (and solicits) a great deal of emotion. Otherwise, the figure exhibits puffy eyes, and a long, slender nose. This piece is in excellent original condition overall. The vessel is intact, save for some old relatively sloppy repair/restoration at parts of the rim (visible in the photos), and a stable stress line along the bottom. Other than that, the entire rest of the body is original and intact, with mineral deposits, root marks, and sediment deposits remaining overall. This piece would benefit from a little restoration/clean-up to the old rim repairs, or could be left as-is. Felt strips have been applied to slightly pad the bottom for display (could be easily removed, if desired). Provenance: Former Rafael Moses collection, Colorado, USA, collected pre-1970.

Mexican Ex-Voto “Dedicated to St. Nicolas de Bari” 1921
Mexico, dated 1921. Oil on tin. A very unusual ex-voto dedicated to a rare saint, San Nicolas de Bari (saved 3 children from drowning in a pickle barrel). Tells the story of Nicolas Gomes who recovered from an internal illness and is the namesake for St Nicholas/Santa Claus. His fame is based on 2 main accomplishments. The first is the "P G" pickle barrel incident and the second "R" version has him purchasing young foundling girls off the street to so they'll not grow up to be sold into prostitution. After giving them a good Christian education, he made sure they married right and gave many bright sparkling gifts at their weddings. The gift giving connects him with his "Father Christmas" identity. Lovely painting, in very good condition. 10” x 7”.

Mexican Ex-Voto “Girl washed away by river” 1881
Mexico, dated 1881. Oil on tin. A dramatic and early ex-voto, wonderfully detailed. Tells the story of A. Figueroa, who fell into the river and was carried by the current but was saved with the help of Saint Anthony. Dated 1881, this is an early ex-voto by a painter whose works we’ve seen dated into the early 20th century. One feature of this painter was the distinctive flourish he used at the bottom ofthe inscriptions. Painted on a recycled metal can with “Devoe • Patents June 28..” stamped in the metal. 7-3/4” x 10-1/2” This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. Tin Retablo Santo Painting, San Francisco de Paula Fundadory Confesor
Mexico, dated “Agosto 20 de 1896.” Oil on metal. With an inscription reading "San Francisco de Paula Fundadory confesor" this delightful painting is published in Saints and Sinners. Curious how it was used to practice penmanship. Houses and people in background resemble those depicted in de Leon's legendary ex-votos. If one travels to his hometown of Totatiche, Jalisco, one can still see these distinctive simple geometric adobe structures. 10” x 7”, excellent condition.

South American “2 Sided Retablo” mid-1880s
Peru/Bolivia, mid-1800’s. Oil on metal. On one side of this intriguing early South American tin painting we see an Andean Virgin Mary holding the Christ child. On the other side, and probably meant to signify backing or being backed by her, whichever your point of view, are 3 boys whose right hands are raised in benediction. The first is dressed in the uniform of an early 19th general and bears a strong resemblance to a young Simon Bolivar or Jose San Martin, the great liberating heroes of the struggle for South American independence from Spain. The preadolescent general stands next to depictions of the Child of Prague and a Christ Child who each hold a globe surmounted by a cross in their left hand, symbols of global Christian evangelization. The symbolism connecting the union of church and fight for South American liberation is unmistakable. The painting is in an early 20th c. wood frame. There is some old paint loss but the condition is overall good and stable with no restoration. 10-3/”4 x 8-½”. This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.

Metal Retablo Santo Ex-Voto Painting, 19th Century
Mexico, ca. 19th century. Oil on metal. The subtle rendering of skin tones demonstrate the mastery of this unidentified, regional painter who, inappropriately and unfortunately, is labeled "anonymous Mexican School." Resulting from a serious lack of scholarship over 95% of Mexican tin retablo paintings are currently simply labeled anonymous but a growing interest in identifying these 19th century tin retablo painters has emerged. Apropos of: I own or know the whereabouts of over 12 signed retablos by as many different artists; this painter, incidentally, is among them. How handsomely is the skill and technique with which it's painted; in manner and style it's a junior echo of the mastery of Italian 15th century "Quatrocento." Note how interesting are the several layers of paint on the skull that give it an oddly realistic "appearance like fractured bone." Condition: considerable old damage and repaint, visible in photos but now completely stable. 14” x 10”.
