He becomes thirsty, drinks, drinks some more, and whammo – they make him a Love Slave. I, being a modest, brilliant man of science, will have no problem out-foxing her in this regard. Lump it, Diego. * * He wasn't handsome. His bulging eyes looked in two directions, he was obese, had bad skin, and his hair was a mess. No matter, the gals dug him, and he was a sex machine. Richard Roundtree's Shaft character is actually Diego Rivera with a car and a gun. Okay, I'm stretching, but I'm right on the mark when I say Diego Rivera was easily as socially successful as Paul Gauguin. Gauguin, as we know, caught syphilis; Diego Rivera had cancer of the, um, winkle. Some might see instruction in this information, others not. I'm not touching it. * * What a lovely painter. He knew his people, Mexicans toiling humbly, working quietly and diligently. He loved them, and that love comes through so eloquently in his canvases. He saw these workers as heroic, regardless of their task, saw the work they do carrying flowers or tooling machines just as important as the work of any law-making bureaucrat or corporate CEO. Almost makes me want to turn Marxist and I would, if not for currently having a job as the CEO of my own corporation. * * Diego was married to Frida Kahlo, whom I'll tell you about next. He put her in some of his murals, depicting her handing out guns and knives to the Revolutionaries. How sweet. Diego, unlike, say, those wimpy Impressionists, was not into nicey-nicey stuff. He would have just as soon pistol-whipped Renoir as look at him. Rivera wanted his art to tell a tale, to send a message, to cause a revolution, to unite the workers and overthrow the man! Fight the power! Lenin lives! Trotsky's a putz! Murals rule! Government for the muralist, by the muralist! A muralist in every pot! He once said that he loved the notion that paintings don't need words, that they stand on their own merits. Modern art critics get real prickly when they hear stuff like that. After all, they have limos to pay for and suites at the Chateau Marmont to rent – just like any other Joe. Why, if not for them, people might think my work is good and Jackson Pollock is a hack, and we can't have that. Many misconceptions about Vincent persist, despite the ungodly amount of literature generated about him and the voluminous stack of letters about his paintings he sent to his dear brother, Theo. Theo is responsible for much of Vincent's perseverance, much the way my brother, Pat, is responsible for mine. He liked my work when few did. What a gem of a guy. But I digress. * * Let's keep it simple. Vincent was Dutch, born in 1853, his complexion as pasty as mine pre-bologna sandwich (see Botticelli) and it stayed that way. More sensitive than a nitro-burning seismograph made of Balsa wood and feathers, Vincent made his way through his childhood like a naked shepherd at a porcupine farm – very cautiously. Uncertain about himself in every way and yet somehow arrogant, Vincent got a job at an art dealer's place, where he eventually pissed off everyone and they booted him. He then gave in to the call of the Lord and became a preacher. He went to minister to the most wretched, destitute folks he could find, but like a tennis player playing lesser talent, soon he found himself as wretched as they. He got booted from the Lord's work, too. * * In 1880 Vincent Van Gogh decided to become an artist, and until his death in 1890 at age thirty-seven, he created the most compelling, brilliant, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping body of work ever. He was utterly driven to paint, sometimes completing two canvases in a single day. Masterpieces. Holy mackerel. His life continued to be traumatic, however – he fell in love with his cousin, but was scorned, intimately involved himself with various brothel types, got in a nasty scrape with Gauguin one night and cut off part of his own ear. He ate paint chips loaded with toxins and poured turpentine on his pillow to sleep. He often stared directly into the sun for long periods of time. Let's say you took Henri Matisse's work, put it in a satchel and had a struggling, part-time soap opera actress carry it into the Guggenheim pretending to be its creator. They'd laugh her out of the building! You know they would! They'd say, "It's too flat, too unfocused, too scattered, too . . . zippy." But Henri? "Oh my yes, a man like this must be taken seriously. Why, just look at him. I bet his beard has more brain cells than my whole head. Why yes, of course I'll install his artwork in my museum. Never before has such an intellectual giant been so . . . 'childlike' in his approach. Pure genius. And that suit! I'm certain tweed has never before felt so fulfilled, so honored, as to be encircling his girth." * * Matisse was Fauve, which is French for "wild beast." Yes, his fur-covered body appearing yellow-orange in the moonlight, a blood-covered, four-inch fang extruding from his lips, his murderous rampage sent towns across France into sheer panic . . . no. No, no. Art critics have their own notions about what constitutes a wild beast, and they were simply referring to his bold use of color. Neat name though, huh? But I digress. * * Here's what makes Matisse's work cool. Matisse was not into foreground and background – he was into color. His paintings vibrate with color so much they almost make a humming sound, and his optimistic point of view about nature and beauty serve well as a soothing pool in an otherwise turbulent tide of art produced during the early 1900s. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. * * While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. Many immortal painters lived and worked in Paris during the late 19th century. They included Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec observed and captured in his art the Parisian nightlife of the period. * Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on Nov. 24, 1864, in Albi, France. He was an aristocrat, the son and heir of Comte Alphonse-Charles de Toulouse and last in line of a family that dated back a thousand years. Henri's father was rich, handsome, and eccentric. His mother was overly devoted to her only living child. Henri was weak and often sick. By the time he was 10 he had begun to draw and paint. * He stayed in the Montmartre section of Paris, the center of the cabaret entertainment and bohemian life that he loved to paint. Circuses, dance halls and nightclubs, racetracks--all these spectacles were set down on canvas or made into lithographs. * Toulouse-Lautrec was very much a part of all this activity. He would sit at a crowded nightclub table, laughing and drinking, and at the same time he would make swift sketches. The next morning in his studio he would expand the sketches into bright-colored paintings. * In order to become a part of the Montmartre life--as well as to protect himself against the crowd's ridicule of his appearance--Toulouse-Lautrec began to drink heavily. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. * While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. * The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. Many immortal painters lived and worked in Paris during the late 19th century. They included Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. Toulouse-Lautrec observed and captured in his art the Parisian nightlife of the period. * Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born on Nov. 24, 1864, in Albi, France. He was an aristocrat, the son and heir of Comte Alphonse-Charles de Toulouse and last in line of a family that dated back a thousand years. Henri's father was rich, handsome, and eccentric. His mother was overly devoted to her only living child. Henri was weak and often sick. By the time he was 10 he had begun to draw and paint. * He stayed in the Montmartre section of Paris, the center of the cabaret entertainment and bohemian life that he loved to paint. Circuses, dance halls and nightclubs, racetracks--all these spectacles were set down on canvas or made into lithographs. * Toulouse-Lautrec was very much a part of all this activity. He would sit at a crowded nightclub table, laughing and drinking, and at the same time he would make swift sketches. While there, I thought about the events that took place on the road outside the Inn's front door - of all the marching Confederate troops, their officers, and General Lee. That print was done for the 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and has since been reproduced and permanently installed in an outdoor display at the exact site by the Gettysburg National Military Park. * By looking north, I was able to show the Confederates coming from the left instead of the right, during Pickett's Charge. I also decided to come in tighter on the scene and not have as much of a panoramic effect as in my previous version. I dropped my eye level lower to give the painting a different look. By moving south on the line to the Angle where hand to hand combat took place and by showing the stone wall, I believe the scene is easily identifiable as Gettysburg to the knowledgeable collector. * Most of the flags shown in this painting are standard Confederate battle flags, with the 9th Virginia Infantry seen in the center and the 56th Virginia Infantry found in the background. To the right, is the regimental flag of the 72nd Pennsylvania and the state issue flag of the 71st Pennsylvania. The 72nd was a semi-zouave regiment, but had lost most of their distinctive uniform by this time. The only remnants were the low, white canvas gaiters containing four buckles on each side. These can be seen on two of the soldiers in the right background. The Cloverleaf and number 69 on the hat of the soldier fighting in the right foreground identifies him as a soldier of the 69th PA. * Perhaps the most difficult painting an artist can do is to try another version of a previously successful on and not have it look like he is copying himself. From there he began his studies and graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. * After graduation from the American Academy, he apprenticed for several years at Magee Inc. a top illustration studio. He continued his career as an illustrator working at another Jack O'Grady studios in Chicago. While working in illustration he became more engrossed in portrait painting. * By 1979, he decided to strike out on his own as a portrait painter. Many people took notice of his painting, and before long, he was approached by a consultant for the Knowles China Company. * Chambers had never heard of collector plates at that time, but he quickly became a design star, appearing on the cover of Plate World magazine and making appearances across the country. In 1991, I accepted a commission from the U.S. Army War College to paint Raise the Colors and Follow Me! It showed General Thomas Francis Meagher and the Irish Brigade charging the Sunken Road at Antietam. For this Irish Brigade picture, I selected a Fredericksburg scene. * * * The Federal army arrived on the north side of the Rappahannock River across from Fredericksburg on November 17, 1862. The men believed there would be no more fighting that year and began building winter quarters on November 29th and since I enjoy painting snow scenes , I knew the picture had to take place sometime after this date. I planned to feature the famous 69th New York but the regiment had no green flag during the battle of Fredericksburg. Tattered and torn from previous fighting, it had been returned to New York to be replaced. Happily, I found that the colors were not retired until December 2nd, so the distinctive and colorful flag would still be present in my painting. I contacted Dr. James I. Robertson, Jr. at Virginia Tech for weather conditions and learned there was a clearing and warning trend that day. The color guard and officers of the 69th arrived at the Brigade headquarters of General Meagher for the official return of the colors. Colonel Robert Nugent points out to General Meagher the spot where the long-awaited pontoons, which arrived on November 26th, have been placed. Other well known members of the 69th are Capt. John H. Donovan (on horseback to the left with the patch over his right eye) and Major James Cavenaugh (the officer on Donovan's immediate left). Capt. Dennis Sullivan is standing at the far right. The man immediately behind him is the Rev. William Corby, who was Chaplain of the 88th NY. * * * The green regimental flag still exists today, as do the ribbons. The tears and bullet holes are based on the actual flag. An interesting note is that it says 1st regiment on the flag and not the 69th because the 69th NY was the first regiment of the Irish Brigade. The white and red headquarters flag shows it to be the flag of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Corps. according to General Order 102 of the Army of the Potomac of 24th March 1862. The white marker with the gold 69th NYSV also still exists. * * * These tattered remnants of Irish valor, the regimental colors, were returned to New York and replaced in a formal ceremony with new flags. The brigade's carpenters built a large log hall in their winter encampment to hold the festivities which were scheduled for December 13th. General Burnside had other plans. The battle started that day, and the Irish Brigade made the deadly assault on Marye's Heights with green sprigs of boxwood in their hats in place of the missing flags. * Flag expert Howard Michael Madaus was of immeasurable help in my research. So was Ken Powers, the official historian of the 69th Regiment NY. Other historians who helped insure the accuracy of this painting were Frank O'Reilly of Fredericksburg National Military Park, Matt Kelly, Tom Duclose of the NY Military History Museum, Paul fowler, Steven Sylvia, and Rod Gragg. * --Mort Kunstler

Thank heavens for two things: 1) They were acrylic. 2) They were lousy. Gustav Klimt, a master of twentieth-century art, had cats. Dozens of cats, all of which had to "go." He made thousands of beautiful drawings. He laid them on the floor . . . with all the cats . . . * * Somewhere an art dealer is weeping . . . * * Let's not talk about his drawings anymore, shall we? Yes, fine, the paintings then. We are entering a glacial shift here now, new notions about art and how far you can tweak it are popping up like lost relatives at a millionaire's wake. Gustav was right there, melting the glacier with a gold-gilded blowtorch. He decided he didn't need to show the shape of a garment, or even show where the garment stops and the background starts. And so whenever he looked about and saw a sea of mangled noses, he packed a bag and did some landscapes. Smart guy. * * He died at age fifty-five, orphaning about 268 cats and leaving fatherless more than a few little boys and girls all around Vienna. By the time Georgia O'Keeffe grew up, the pirates were long gone, and so we will never know who had more willpower. What we do know is that no one who knew her could match her in this regard. * * Things went well for you at Georgia's ghost ranch as long as you wanted to do everything Georgia wanted to do at the precise millisecond she decided she wanted to do it and only for as long. Otherwise, watch that cactus thorn, buster, its needle goes in and stays in. * * But I ask: Who cares? Let's talk art. Georgia started out in Manhattan painting flowers and abstracts and the coolest New York cityscapes you ever saw. She's a young raven-haired beauty when she meets gallery owner/photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, who promptly boots his wife and starts clicking his quivering shutter about a billion times. The subject? Her naked body in all its splendor. Whoops, I stopped talking about her art. She painted flowers like my mom folds towels, with exacting precision and intense passion, painted them in extreme close-up views that seem like abstract masterpieces to some and female anatomy lessons to others. * * In 1929 she cruised past New Mexico and the land of the giant watermelon (the Sandia Mountain Range – believe it or not, that's what they're named for) drew her like a cash-starved Democrat Pol to a shifty Indonesian billionaire (oooh, how topical for now). She moved there for good after Stieglitz died, and she painted what she wanted, when she wanted, how she wanted till she died. * * She painted New Mexico, an enchanted land, at its most mystical. And it is mystical. Stand outside at midnight on the outskirts of Taos – something lingers in the air. Georgia took deep, gulping gasps of that air and held it in, then let it come out and fairly engulf her work. Someone who hasn't been there never quite gets this, and someone who has, grows an abiding love for her stuff. Add me to that list. * * I painted some bones floating in the air behind her in my portrait of her. Some ninny looked at it and asked me if that was a sexual innuendo. I mean, hey, are you nuts? Absolutely not. * Biography * * Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless "racer", Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. * * While a student, an encouraging art teacher swung wide the door to Markus' talent and profoundly moved him. However, the Grand Ledge art scene was somewhat lacking, leading Markus to take on a number of odd jobs before accidentally stumbling upon accounting as a means to making a living. After a near-fatal bout with Crohn's Disease in early 1985, he declared that the accountant was "dead" and in his place was a man pursuing his dream of becoming a successful artist. * * The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, "Coyote." He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as "Coyote," is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow - Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. Then he did something he'd never done before or since: Markus made a drawing of a song. * * Over the next six months Markus painted billboards by day for a living and drew his Coyotes into the night. To the wall above his desk he taped these words, "No one works this hard and this smart - and has it come to nothing." Within a year, he walked out of Artexpo in New York City with commitments from 110 art galleries who sought to represent his work. * * In the decades that followed, Pierson's work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life's ups and downs.
