The first series of sculptures manufactured by Chiparus were the series of the children.The mature style of Chiparus took shape beginning in the 1920s. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance. His work was influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb was excavated.He worked primarily with the Edmond Etling and Cie Foundry in Paris administrated by Julien Dreyfus. NIPPES over U.S.~ Daniel Nippes (1796 - 1848) was a major manufacturer and government contractor. Rear of the hammer and perpendicular to the plane of the barrel is stamped ~MILL over CREEK over PA over 1845~. 3 barrel bands. Angular bayonet underneath front of barrel. A coin from 1849 is recessed into the left side side of the stock just above the trigger with a small square nail. Steel butt plate stamped ~US~ on the upper tang. Steel ramrod with trumpet shaped end and swelled shank. CONDITION: Very Good. All original parts. Metal surfaces are smooth with sharp edges. Some moderate pitting shows on the rear of the barrel and nipple area. Butt stock shows mild gouges, pressure dents and scratches commensurate with the age of the rifle.

Mêne specialized in small bronze figures which explains why none of his works exist as public statuary. His work was a popular success with the bourgeois class and many editions of each sculpture were made, often to decorate an increasing number of private homes of the period. The quality of these works is high, comparable to Barye's. Mêne also seems to have enjoyed a longer period of success and celebrity than his contemporaries. He is considered to have been the lost-wax casting expert of his time, later surpassed only by Auguste Rodin.

Liege single shot .50 caliber smooth bore percussion carriage pistol with hand engraved hammer, lock and even screw heads as well as engraved trigger guard, which is german silver as is the but. The walnut stock is beautifully hand checkered and retains most of its original varnish. There is a small hairline crack from one mounting screw that could easily be repaired, but as is does not attract from the piece. The tiger striped damascus octagon barrel is fine and the striping is vivid. The ramrod is original to the 1830 Circa gun. The pistol has a very graceful shape and is in very good untouched condition. MWF1935

E. Whitney Civil War Musket 1833. This muzzle loader was produced in the U. S. by E. Whitney, and is stamped ~New Haven 1833~. The trigger and hammer work smoothly with two stops. The sling brackets, trigger guard, and butt plate are all present and intact, and the tamping rod is present. It also has the original mahogany stock. There is an ~L~ stamped just ahead of the sling bracket, as well as on the side. This may stand for an initial of the inspector of this firearm. From end to end, this musket measures approximately 50inches
