The story is A young Mexican/Americans Great Grandfather reportedly shot this carbine at Pancho Villa when he crossed the border into New Mexico. The rear sight wasremoved and a Lyman tang sight added during use (after granddad missed). The same family said they used it a lot but couldn't hit anything with it so they kept it in the barn until a friend said it might bring $1500 ormore at our auction. The butt stock show classic western repairs, and traces of blue in patina with some rust. A neat Winchester carbine used by "the family who couldn't shoot straight".

Classic Cape Gun 12 ga/.54 approx SN:1491Signed J Hayton on locks, illegible inscription on barrels, right barrel is 12 ga smoothbore, left barrel is rifled, gun measures 46 1/2" overall, barrel group is 30". The barrel shows a wide reinforced ribwith 5-leaf rear sights and graduations all the way to the front sight which is a Marked South African feature as they paid militia men for such sighted arms. The gun is #1491 on the trigger guard, the metal surfaces aregood with light to moderate scattered erosion and pitting. The stocks are fair with some losses and dings, mars, refinishing over the losses which are not slightly. The ramrod is an old replacement. he actions are good andworking. A favorite of the early African settlers, especially South Africa and Rhodesia.
