(Fleischer Studios, 1930) Extremely rare background layout from the first appearance of Betty Boop, Dizzy Dishes. The layout is paired with a rare trimmed drawing of Fritz the Dog, the co-star of the Koko the Clown Out of the Inkwell series of silent shorts from the 1920s. Two very rare pieces from Fleischer Studios. The drawing of Fritz the Dog has been trimmed to image and placed on the slightly trimmed 7 in. x 8 ½ in. background layout. Fritz measures 2 in. x 1 ½ in.

(Fleischer Studios, 1930s) Original production drawing of Koko The Clown from an early 1930s Fleischer Studios Short. Accomplished in graphite on untrimmed 8 ¼ in. x 11 in. animation paper. The drawing features Koko, as he is about to jump back into the inkwell following Bimbo (whose shoes are visible above Koko’s right hand). Koko was Fleischer’s first cartoon star and original drawings are extremely rare. Koko’s image size is 4 in. x 3 ½ in.

(Fleischer Studios, 1934) A very early original production drawing of Popeye from Sock-a-Bye Baby. Accomplished in graphite on untrimmed 8 ½ in. x 11 in. animation paper. A small one-inch area of paper missing from one edge, but does not affect the image. Popeye first appeared in an animated short in 1933. This drawing is from his sixth animated short. Early drawings such as this one are extremely rare. Total image size is 6 in. x 4 in.

(Fleischer Studios, 1934) Rare set of 2 original production cels, both with original background paintings from Max Fleischer’s 1934 short film, Poor Cinderella. The first of these two amazing cel setups features Betty Boop dancing with the prince at the ball. In the second piece, the Royal Valet is signaling midnight with a handheld gong. Poor Cinderella was Fleischer Studios’ first color film, and the only appearance of Betty Boop in color during the Fleischer era. The two hand-painted backgrounds show amazing detail not usually seen until much later in the development of animation. These two pieces represent the only two cels and background setups known to exist from this film. Betty Boop made her first appearance in Dizzy Dishes (1930), and continued starring in shorts through 1939. This short was made using the two-strip Cinecolor process because the Disney Studio had exclusive rights to Technicolor at this time. Betty’s hair was colored red to take advantage of this process. Each piece is beautifully matted with mat openings of 7 ¼ in. x 9 in.

(Famous Studios/Fleischer Studios, 1943) Original concept pastel drawing for the Fleischer Studios Superman episode, “The Mummy Strikes.” Although 13 episodes of this series were produced, artwork is extremely rare. The piece is matted and framed with a mat opening of 9 in. x 15 in. Frame measures 16 in. x 22 in.

(Paramount/Famous Studios, 1948) Original layout drawing by animator Bill Tytla for the Little Audrey animated shorts produced by Paramount between 1947 and 1949. Paramount had great success with a series of shorts based on Marjorie Henderson Buell’s “Little Lulu,” but, after a licensing dispute, the studio did not renew its license and created their own version, Little Audrey. The character went on to have considerable success in comic book form. This model drawing from the estate of Bill Tytla is accomplished in graphite and red pencil on untrimmed 8 ¼ in. x 11 in. animation paper. Total image size is 4 in. x 4 ½ in.

The cel was slightly trimmed to 8 in. x 11 in. and placed on an airbrushed background as prepared for sale by the Studio. The cel is still in the original hand-lettered mat with Lantz Certificate on the reverse. Hand-signed by Lantz at a later date on the bottom left of the mat.

(Walter Lantz/Universal Studios, 1960s) Original production cel of Chilly Willy and another character from a 1960s production. The untrimmed 10 ½ in. x 12 ½ in. cel of Chilly Willy is placed with a trimmed 10 ½ in. x 11 ½ in. cel and background from a Lantz Production. The cel of the Caveman is hand-signed by Walter Lantz.

(Universal Cartoon Studios, 1999-2002) Original production cel of Woody Woodpecker and another character from The New Woody Woodpecker Show. The untrimmed 10 ½ in. x 12 ½ in. cel has been placed on a hand-painted production background. Total image size of the two characters is 7 ½ in. x 9 in.

(UPA Studios, 1949) Rare original cels of Mr. Magoo and a Bear from Ragtime Bear. This 1949 short was the first appearance of Mr. Magoo, and features an early design of the character (voiced by Jim Backus). The untrimmed cels measure 10 ½ in. x 12 ½ in. and have been placed on a color copy background. The cel of Magoo has a UPA Pictures copyright label that was applied at a later date. Magoo measures 3 ½ in. x 2 ½ in.

(Warner Bros. Studios, 1955) Considered one of the greatest and most popular cartoon shorts ever made, Chuck Jones’ One Froggy Evening was the only appearance of Michigan J. Frog during the classic period of Warner Bros. animation. This hand-inked and hand-painted production model cel is one of only two known to exist. The cel was trimmed down to 3 ¼ in. x 4. ¼ in. at some point and placed in a small frame. There is paint chipping throughout, but because of the rarity of the item the owner decided not to restore the piece. The cel is still attached to its pink paper background as it was prepared. An extremely rare piece of animation art.

He later worked on Bambi and Pinocchio, as well as several shorts including the groundbreaking The Old Mill. This painting depicting Red Riding Hood and the Wolf measures 11 in. x 11 ½ in. and is signed in the lower left corner.

“Mickey Mouse and his Pals” gumball machine. This coin-operated vendor was manufactured in 1938-39 and is all original, including the fantastic decal that runs around the entire glass containment globe. The machine measures 15 in. tall. This is considered a “3 way vendor” made to dispense gumballs, candy or nuts. The decal is intact with minimal scratching on the bottom edge. The decal depicts Disney graphics of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald, Pluto and many other familiar cartoon friends. The machine has a green porcelain/enamel body with the original silver metal chute lid embossed with the Hamilton manufacturer’s mark. Original rubber feet on the metal base are intact. The mechanics of the machine are all present but untested. The machine comes with its original key. In excellent condition.

Vintage 1939 original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs figure play set. All seven dwarf figures are painted, solid rubber castings, approx. 5 in. tall. The Snow White figure is hollow with articulated arms and head and approx. 9 in. tall. These figures come in their original box. A liner inside features cutouts fitting the backs of each dwarf and Snow White. The name of each character is printed next to their respective space. The illustrated box lid depicts Snow White singing to her little friends outside of their cabin. The lid itself shows signs of age and some splitting. There is a tape swatch that goes from the bottom side of the box and travels just 2 in. onto the cover. The figures are manufactured by Seiberling Latex Products Co. in Akron, Ohio. The Dwarf figures are in Excellent condition, while Snow White shows signs of deterioration and misshaping from age. A rare complete box and set in any condition.

(Walt Disney Productions, 1938/1940s) Two vintage lamps with original shades. The first lamp features a resin figure of Dopey and is dated 1938. The lampshade features a scene from the film with Snow White and some animals. The lamp is in excellent shape and has the original electrical cord attached. The second Lamp features an American Pottery Lamp Base (manufactured in the late 1940s) with what appears to be a 1950s lamp shade.

Complete 1930s Mickey Mouse cereal spoons on store display card. These spoons were awarded as premiums for buying 1 package each of Post’s Bran Flakes and Grape Nuts Flakes. The store card is in excellent condition and the 12 silver-plated kid’s cereal spoons have Mickey Mouse’s image cast on the handle end. Spoons remain mint in original plastic wrap. A fantastic vintage example of Disney promotional branding.

A late 1938 Mickey Mouse Ingersoll wristwatch by Ingersoll/Waterbury. This is a “5-notch style” wristwatch with a chrome-finish casing. Mickey hands point out the time. This watch’s minute hand is present but detached inside the bezel. Black leather buckled wrist strap is worn but remains supple. Overall, the watch could stand cleaning and some refurbishment. Comes in original blue cardboard box with a graphic of Mickey Mouse and the “W.D. ENT” copyright. Insert panel that holds watch is in good condition. Box lid shows some splitting and wear. Bottom has been rubbed and with some water damage on edges.

A colorfully presented Milton Bradley board game based on the Walt Disney motion picture Pinocchio. The board resembles a Monopoly-type track and is a fairly traditional “race to the end” game using game pieces and a spinner to determine progress of each of 4 players. This is a complete game and all contents—spinner, game pieces, cards, cardboard gold pieces, game board and playing instructions—are in mint condition. Even the cardboard inserts (featuring Pinocchio) that house the game pieces are beautiful. The box top depicts images of Pinocchio and his protector Jiminy Cricket with vignettes of movie adventures gracing the box sides. Box has some chipping and corner splits, but overall, in excellent condition.

1950s Marx mechanical Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck hand car with spring-wound motor and built in wind up key. Mickey and Donald crank the 5 in. long handcar around a colorful, whimsically illustrated 13 in. x 21 ½ in. lithographed tin track base, which includes a 3-D tunnel, plastic semaphore and crossing gate. The tin base bears illustrations of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and his nephews, and Pluto. The accompanying box is complete but with the end flaps cleanly torn off (retained and included). The condition of the box components and surfaces is very good. Cartoon character art remains clean and bright.

(Walt Disney 1950s) Rare collection of nine (9) autographs relating to The Mickey Mouse Club, including Walt Disney, Mouseketeers Annette, Sharon, Darlene, Bobby, Lonnie, and Jimmie Dodd. Also included are autographs of Clarence Nash (voice of Donald Duck) and Cliff Edwards (voice of Jiminy Cricket), both of whom made frequent appearances on the show.

(1940s-50s) Lot of 8 Disneyland Park light-up cereal boxes (including Snow White and the Magic Castle), a Pep cereal point of purchase display premium sample box with Donald Duck ring offer, a Fantasia photo album, Mickey Mouse Club promo display standees (4), two 1940s Bran Flakes boxes with Mickey and Donald on them, and an original promo ad for the Donald duck “Living Toy” ring.

This Tyco HO gauge set No. T-6626 Walt Disney’s Santa Fe and Disneyland R.R. scale model HO electric train set comes in its original box, and inner boxes. The set consists of: (1) T223D: 1995 1890 “Ten Wheeler” Santa Fe & Disneyland “Lighted” engine car, (2) T523D:398 1890 passenger “Clerestory Roof” cars, (1) T524D:398 1890 Combine Car “Clerestory Roof” car, (1) T322C:329 1860 water car, T323E: 349 S.F.&D. horse car. Cars in excellent condition and internal boxing in Good condition with some wear from age and handling. Box top shows side and corner splitting and tape remnants. Box top exhibits some chipping and wrinkling but illustration of the train and the Disneyland train station remains clean and bright. Electronics untested.

Disneyland “It’s A Small World” vinyl lunchbox with thermos. This lunchbox is unused and in mint condition. Store price tag is still affixed to front. Playful artwork represents the beloved Disneyland attraction with caricatures of some of the colorful multi-national children featured in the ride. The thermos is virtually pristine.

Walt Disney’s “Frontierland” Bow & Arrow set comes in a 38 in. x 3½ in. brown cardboard box with red, yellow and black printing depicting Western images of a cowboy, American Indian, Teepee, and rifle and tomahawk. The box features two cutout windows that reveal the contents: an approx. 38 in. wooden bow with red, white and blue paper handgrip with twisted brown and white bowstring. Includes three approx. 19 in. wooden, feathered suction cup arrows. One folded bulls-eye paper target. The cardboard box exhibits some minor crushing and edge separation. The play set is manufactured by Withington in West Minot, Maine and is displayed in a museum quality, 44 in. x 9 ½ in. x 2 in. fabric-lined, black shadowbox frame. Overall, in Excellent condition.

Extremely rare original concept drawing by Marc Davis for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction at Disneyland featuring two comely women being “purchased” by a pirate. Accomplished in pen and ink and watercolor wash on illustration paper. The drawing is framed with a mat opening of 13 in. x 15 ½ in. Overall frame size is 20 in. x 22 in.

Silk Screened Mary Blair Concept on Board That originally hung in the Guest Rooms at the contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World. The artwork was based on the mural located in the Lobby. These prints were removed during a recent renovation of the guest rooms. Measuring 20 in. x 17 in.

This life-sized statue was sold in the “Disney Gallery” at Disneyland and at the “Art of Disney” store in Disneyworld. This hollow, wooden carved figure stands a full 59 in. tall including a rolling 32 ½ in. round base. The figure is posed welcoming, hand extended in greeting. The shoes, pants buttons and face have been left unpainted but varnished to show the grain of the natural wood. Pants, body, nose, eyes, ears and mouth are all painted in vivid colors. This was ultimately a limited edition of 100 pieces, although this particular figure is marked at the left foot heel as being made “04/10” and “A/P” (artist’s proof). An impressively large Mickey Mouse display piece for the Disney collector and fan. Special shipping arrangements will apply.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad was one of the best of the Disney post-war animated compilations. Released in 1949, it combined the stories of those “two fabulous characters” Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and, from The Wind in the Willows and J. Thaddeus Toad. A few years later, as Walt Disney looked to his animated fantasies as themes for Fantasyland, the unhinged and adventurous Mr. Toad must have seemed a natural for one of the “dark,” or indoor rides. As Basil Rathbone noted in the film’s narration, Toad as “a disturbing factor, a reckless adventurer, having a positive mania for fads while never counting the cost”… characteristics which lent themselves to an exciting, fanciful ride at Disneyland. Within Walt Disney’s new theme park experiment, Fantasyland was the area most familiar to visitors in 1955, while the themes of the other lands were more general and their attractions required some introduction. Once the guests ventured up Main Street and crossed the castle drawbridge, their attention was drawn to Disneyland’s original three dark rides, Peter Pan, Snow White and Mr. Toad. The Toad ride was first considered as a form of rollercoaster, with the cars following a downhill track towards obstacles (such as parked cars), which would move out of the way at the last minute. Disney ultimately decided that the ride would not be appropriate for small children and the elderly, and it was toned down. Disney art director Bill Martin designed the ride to carry the original themes of the film. “Viewing the film was part of the design process,” he later recalled. “I made the track layout to start with, but we went through storyboards galore. Since the point was to convert Walt’s cartoon films to rides in Fantasyland, those dark rides were developed from the original 4 x 8 storyboards and concept sketches made for the animated films.” The most art-intensive of the three original dark rides was Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. It was designed to last 1 minute and 38 seconds, a pace to accommodate nearly 700 people an hour. There were a total of twelve original Toad cars, with nine on line (entering Toad Hall every eleven seconds) and three held in reserve. These cars were the same ones in use for over forty years. The original cars were named individually as Mr. Toad, MacBadger, Mole and Ratty, with two each of Toady, Cyril, Winky and Weasel. Arrow Development built them with two hundred pounds of fiberglass and sheet metal, and was some of the first equipment delivered for the new park. When Disneyland decided to change the original two-seater cars to four-seater cars (which they were then using at Disneyworld in Orlando), the late Leon Janzen, who along with his brother Jack wrote the Disneyland fanzine E-Ticket, inquired about purchasing one of the old cars. The original designer of the Disneyland ride cars, Bob Gurr, reserved the number 3 and 4 cars for himself and the Janzens. After acquiring them from the park, he took the cars back to his shop and cleaned them, polishing the chrome and sealing it against future oxidation. He also installed a pivot wheel under the front part of each car for ease of movement around his shop. Bob then transferred ownership of Ratty, the #3 car, to Leon and Jack. Offered here is this original #3 car, the red and black carriage named “Ratty,” which is emblazoned in red letters on the front. As mentioned above, the car has undergone some minor restoration – cleaning, primarily, with the fabrication of a few new parts to replace those that were worn or broken. Other than a few minor scrapes and two bulges in the red vinyl fabric of the seat (all of which can easily be repaired), the car is in exceptional condition. This car comes with a copy of the original “Disneyland Resort Material Clearance” receipt dated June 18, 1997 listing the #3 and #4 cars, noting the sale has been approved by Earnie Baily and Marty Sklar at Walt Disney Imagineering. Just beneath, a handwritten note documents the transfer of #3 Ratty to Jack and Leon Janzen, which has been signed by Bob Gurr. In addition, the car is accompanied with a signed letter of provenance from Leon Janzen’s wife, discussing the history of the car and how it came into her husband’s possession. This may be the only opportunity a collector may ever have to acquire such an important part of vintage Disneyland—an actual full-size car used on one of its most popular attractions, ridden and enjoyed by thousands. More than just a fantastic original artifact, this car from Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride represents the pleasant return of a warm childhood memory—a memory shared by countless numbers of children since the 1950s.

The head has zipper closure at the back and measures approx. 10 ½ in. tall. Accompanied by an animatronics pirate right hand, with armature still present, measuring approx. 12 ½ in. in length. Both head and hand are made of vinyl and contain remnants of makeup and paint. There is a small repair under the chin of the head. Overall, both items in very good condition.

(Walt Disney, 1953) Rare original document drafted by Walt Disney and artist Herb Ryman to give words and images to Walt's idea of a family fun attraction. This complete document in a folder is one of 3 supposedly produced personally by Disney and Ryman for Walt to take to New York to find a partner to invest $5 million to finance the building of Disneyland. He left these 3 documents with 3 bankers in New York and left without an investor. This document was discovered at an estate sale on Long Island in New York in the early 1980s and has been in the same owner's hands since 1984 (collectibles expert and appraiser Gary Sohmers) who has extensively researched it, to determine its rarity and importance. It has been viewed by Dave Smith of the Walt Disney Archives and deemed authentic. The document includes: an outer 9" x 12" folder with tabs to hold pages featuring what appears to be rub on lettering "DISNEYLAND". Inside the folder are 9 typed pages describing Walt's planned park with descriptions of the different "lands,” including some that never came to fruition such as "Lilliputian Land" and "Happy Holiday Land." The first Map inside the front cover is a large 24" x 36" stat, hand colored by Herb Ryman in colored pencils featuring a birds-eye view of the proposed park. The second Map is a 12" x 18" stat of an architectural rendering of the proposed park showing an advanced stage of planning for the acreage that was purchased in Anaheim. The typed pages include quotes from Walt that have been referenced about the proposed park ever since. One page features only "Walt Disney - sometime - in 1955 will present to the people of the world - and children of all ages - a new experience in entertainment. In these pages is proffered a glimpse into this great adventure - a preview of what the visitor will experience – Disneyland." This is an extremely rare document in the history of Walt Disney and has never been reproduced in whole or in part. Although several sources on the Internet reference the document in research and company history, this is the only copy known to still exist.

The hand is also made of foam latex and measures approx. 7 in. in length. Both items show signs of use and age. Overall, still in good condition.

(WED 1955) Extremely rare 19 in. long plaster prototype maquette for the Bruce Bushman designed “Phantom Boats” attraction. Originally called “Tomorrowland Boats,” the attraction opened on July 20th, 1955 in the lagoon that would eventually be home to the Submarine Voyage. About a month later, the boats were redesigned with tail fins and renamed the “Phantom Boats.” The boats were a mechanical nightmare and by the end of 1955 the attraction was closed—the first Disneyland attraction to close at the park. The maquette is missing its fins, but still retains the look and feel of the original design.

(c. 1930s) Extremely rare Walt Disney sketch of Mickey Mouse with autograph. Boldly drawn in black ink in a 3 ½ in. x 5 ½ in. autograph card. Walt Disney seldom drew his own characters, and sketches such as this one are extremely rare.

Original one-page autograph and Dedication by Walt Disney that hung in his house in Squaw Valley. Disney was named the Chairman of Pageantry for the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, and helped craft the plans for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. In Addition Walt and his team were heavily involved in the planning of other aspects of the Squaw Valley Olympics. The site for the Games was so remote that it was the first Olympics ever to lodge athletes in an Olympic Village. Disney and his friends like Art Linkletter made sure there was a constant stream of entertainment and entertainers on hand to stage nightly productions for the athletes. Disney’s artists also contributed, with John Hench designing a series of snow sculptures for the venue and even the Olympic torch itself. Disney had a chalet built at Squaw Valley for his frequent visits and stays at the Olympics. When he vacated the chalet for the final time, he left this note, which hung framed in the chalet until now. Inscribed on 9 in. x 7 ½ in. paper—“To The Picturesque House In Squaw Valley With Pleasant Memories—Walt Disney”—a very rare and unique autograph. Photo of the Chalet included.

(Diane Disney Miller, The Story of Walt Disney, 1956, First Edition, New York, Henry Holt and Company) Signed by Walt Disney on the half title, “Best wishes, Walt Disney.” It is also signed on the front and rear endpapers and flyleaves in ink and felt tip by 38 members of Disney’s staff. Included is a who’s who of the great Disney artists, animators and directors. Four of the “Nine Old Men,” Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnson, Marc Davis and Ward Kimball, as well as Ken Anderson (art director for Snow White), Claude Coats, Grim Natwick, Eyvind Earle, Bob Jones, Carl Barks, Ray Bradbury (designer of several Disney projects for the 1964 World’s Fair), Bill Justice, Harry Tytle, Virginia Davis, and many more. The book, by Disney’s daughter, was the only full-length biography of Walt published during his lifetime. This is the only copy we have ever seen that was signed by any animators at all, much less 38 of them! A true rarity and an enduring record of the giants of the animation genre.

Barks began his career at Disney in 1935 as an “in-betweener.” He eventually became the artist behind the Donald Duck series of comic books and is credited with creating Scrooge McDuck.

This Universal (Burke & James) 35mm Model A hand-crank motion picture camera (serial number 2388) measures approx. 11 ¼ in. x 12 in. x 4 ¾ in. and is built with a black wooden housing with heavy gauge aluminum hinged doors on both sides featuring an engine turned finish. The left door exhibits "Arabian Nights Cartoons Rudy-Max-Hugh” hand-painted in black. The three fledgling animators, Rudolf Ising, Carmen “Max” Maxwell and Hugh Harman worked at Walt Disney’s first animation company, Laugh-O-Gram Films, Inc. based in Kansas City. Laugh-O-Gram was started by Disney in 1922 and produced a series of fairy tale cartoons including Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, Cinderella and, in the spring of 1923, the Alice’s Wonderland series which combined live action and animation. With money raised from stock, the company purchased equipment including a used Universal camera. During the declining months the company’s Universal camera was used by Walt Disney and Red Lyon to shoot news for Pathé and Universal newsreels. The company faced mounting debt and enlisted new investors and loans. Fred Schmeltz, who owned a hardware store, secured his loans with a chattel mortgage and on paper became the owner of all the company’s equipment. In 1923 Disney used $40 to move to California. Bankruptcy proceedings for Laugh-O-Gram were instituted in October 1923. In the meantime, Ising, Maxwell and Harman, still smitten by the animation bug, decided to see whether they could succeed where Laugh-O-Gram had failed. According to authors Russell Merritt and J.B. Kaufman in their 1992 book entitled Walt in Wonderland: The Silent Films of Walt Disney, “Fred Schmeltz was now the legal owner of the Laugh-O-Gram equipment, and Harman, Ising and Maxwell approached him early in the fall of 1923 and arranged to buy some of it. Armed with the Universal camera and its stand, two animating booths, and miscellaneous other equipment from the failed company, they tentatively launched a studio of their own under the name ‘Arabian Nights.’ Unfortunately, Arabian Nights Cartoons did not fare any better than Laugh-O-Gram, and in late 1924 Disney invited Harman and Ising to California to join him once again. Copies of the original Laugh-O-Gram bankruptcy documents obtained through the National Archives and Records Administration are included with the lot. Among the numerous pages, is a listing of assets purchased from Laugh-O-Gram by Rudolph Ising, Hugh Harman and Carman G. [“Max”] Maxwell: “…two animating booths, one punch, one camera and stand, one re-wind table, one copy-o-graph, one inking table, one steel cabinet, two chairs…” The camera is in working order and was discovered missing the hand crank and front metal panel which have been faithfully recreated. This Universal camera remains as the first professional movie camera owned by Walt Disney to produce animation. The fact that it was also used by Rudy Ising, Hugh Harman and Max Maxwell is an added bonus since they later formed the core team at Warner Bros. animation studio. Worthy of inclusion in the finest animation collections, the importance of this camera cannot be overstated.

Originally obtained from the Les Clark Collection, this drawing is one of the only layouts known to exist and one of only a handful of drawings to feature both Mickey and Pete. The movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, premiered on December 21, 1937 at the Cathay Circle Theater in Hollywood; at the end of the showing, the audience, packed with celebrities, rose to its feet and cheered. Bringing it to the screen had not been easy. It began in 1934, when Disney assembled a group of animators and took them through his ideas about how to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs into a movie. From 1934 on, nearly 750 artists were employed at one time or another on the film, including many of the best and brightest who ever worked in the genre. Walt originally intended to spend up to half a million dollars on the project. In the end, he spent more than $1.5 million. Although the studio had had some success with a variety of animated short subjects, spending at this rate quickly caused Walt to run out of money, and he and Roy Disney had to leave their former bankers and get continued financing from the Bank of America, whom Disney courted constantly as the overruns piled up. Fortunately for Disney, the premier of the movie received virtually unanimous rave reviews, and it became an instant hit. Nevertheless, $1.5 million was a lot of money to make up, especially when children were being admitted to the showings for ten cents each. Disney had recently changed distribution companies, signing up with RKO. In addition to domestic distribution of the picture, RKO had a significant presence in Europe, and Walt was eager to take advantage of this additional market. RKO Radio Pictures held its first International Sales Convention on September 5th and 6th, 1938, at the Hotel George V in Paris. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the featured film at the meeting. There were 24 distributors (dubbed The European Foreign Legion) from across Europe invited to the Convention. These distributors were shown the movie and the promotional materials at a two-day business meeting which featured lunches sponsored by Disney, and in the weeks following the Convention, the distributors and RKO worked out individual distribution contracts. As part of his promotion for the affair, Disney had copies of the Disney book, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, published by Harper and Brothers in 1937, brought to the Disney studios where he and 51 of the principal creators of the film signed copies to be given as gifts to the prospective distributors. Disney signed boldly at the bottom of the title page and instructed the animators to sign on the title page and on the front flyleaf. We have examined the three copies known to exist from this group (the other two currently in private collections), and each signature is placed in the same location on each copy, indicating that the signing was carefully orchestrated. The group of signers is a remarkable collection. It contains 51 of the 64 people officially credited on the movie, and includes six of the nine men later referred to by Disney as the "nine old men". These six are Les Clark, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Lawson, Woolie Reitherman and Frank Thomas. In addition, it includes character designers Albert Hurter and Joe Grant, art directors Charles Phillippi, Terrell Stapp, McLaren Stewart, Harold Miles, Gustav Tenggren, Ken Anderson, Kendall O'Connor, and Hazel Sewell and supervising animators Ham Luske and Vladimir Tytla as well as a continuing who’s who of Disney animators. Included with the book is the original letter written by the European RKO representative welcoming one of the attendees. This man, Otto Sonnenfeld, was the RKO distributor for Czechoslovakia, and he was Jewish. When he returned to Nazi-dominated Czechoslovakia, the distribution contract he secured for Snow White allowed him to leave his homeland and gain entry to British-controlled Palestine with a document known as a capitalist certificate, recognizing him as the RKO Pictures distributor for Palestine. In later years, Mr. Sonnenfeld and his wife credited the RKO convention and the success of Snow White with saving their lives. It is believed that most of these special copies of the book that went to Paris never left Europe and were destroyed during the war. Also included with the book are the business agenda for the convention and the menu for the Disney-sponsored dinner following the meetings. In all, the book and the attendant materials make up a fascinating and truly rare piece of Disney history. Because of its provenance and its importance in the Disney story, it is not an exaggeration to say that this is the most significant Disney book available to the collector.

Gustaf Tenggren and Ferdinand Horvath were responsible for the unique visual style of the film, with a style borrowed from the atmospheric works for Arthur Rackham and John Bauer. The cel image is trimmed to 20 in. x 11 ¼ in. and the overall size of the setup is 27 in. x 11 ½ in. An incredible artifact from the production of this classic Disney feature film.

(Walt Disney Studios, 1939) This original background painting was created during the production of the 1939 Donald Duck short, The Beach Picnic for the opening scene of the short. However, it does not appear in the film. A decision was apparently made during production to open with Donald manipulating an animated beach umbrella. The artwork is on a trimmed background sheet measuring 8 ½ in. x 11 in.

In 1939, the Disney Studio created an animated short for the Nabisco Company to be shown at the 1939 World’s Fair. Titled Mickey’s Surprise Party, it was the first animated production to feature the “revised” modern version of Mickey Mouse that we know today. Mickey’s features were rounded a bit, but most importantly, he was given new eyes and pupils with white around them to help show more emotion. An extremely rare set-up featuring untrimmed 10 in. x 12 in. cels and background. Mickey’s image size is 4 in. x 5 in.

(Walt Disney Studios, 1940) Considered one of the finest feature-length animated films ever made, Pinocchio was heavily influenced by the art of Gustaf Tenggren and used rich, detailed watercolor backgrounds by masterful artists such as Claude Coats. The best of these backgrounds were the ones that depicted the interior of Geppetto’s cottage. The background offered here is one of the finest in the film, and appears when Jiminy Cricket hops up to Geppetto’s cottage and looks inside the window. It is the first view of the inside of Geppetto’s home, and had to convey the sense of warmth and wonder of what lay within. The oversize background measures 15 ½ in. x 20 in. with an image area of 14 ¼ in. x 18 ½ in. Although the background stands alone, a previous owner has added incredible production cels of Geppetto, Figaro and Pinocchio. Total image size of the cels is 8 in. x 7 ¾ in. One of the most important and finely crafted backgrounds in the feature.

Phillips. In one of the illustrations the wolf is in disguise and hiding in the forest. The second piece in the set depicts the wolf dressed as the grandmother and surprising Little Red Riding Hood. Accomplished in pencil ink and watercolor on illustration paper. Includes a copy of the article and magazine.

Protective paper coversheet is signed off by Walt Disney (signed "Walt") and includes the production number 2733, production title and camera instructions. The image measures 8 ½ in. x 11 in. Overall dimensions are 10 in. x 12 in.

(Walt Disney Studios, 1945) During World War II, the artists at the Disney Studios created more than 1200 military insignias for American troops. Most or the artwork survives in vintage patches, etc., but the original artwork is considered very rare and very collectible. This gouache on 9 ½ in. x 7 ½ in. illustration board insignia was produced for the 52nd Harbor Craft Crew based in San Francisco, California. As rare as the original insignia is, the accompanying paperwork is even harder to find. Included with the Insignia is a letter dated October 1944, acknowledging the request for the insignia (and warning that there are 300 requests in front of this one), The original letter that accompanied the insignia (on studio “Three Caballeros Stationary”), The Studio Licensing Agreement granting the right to reproduce the insignia (for the sum of $1 and signed by Gunther Lessing), and the thank you letter from the commander of the unit. Together, an amazing collection of Disney wartime memorabilia.

In the episode, Sullivan chronicles the history of the Disney Studios up to that point as the company celebrated Mickey Mouse’s 25th birthday and the release of Peter Pan. Special filmed segments take place at the Burbank Studio. Sullivan is shown driving up to the front security kiosk and in his narrative immediately launches into a three-minute commercial for the 1953 Lincoln. He then has an encounter with a Donald Duck doll and discusses the new Peter Pan movie. Cels of Donald Duck, Peter Pan, and Tinkerbell have been trimmed to image and applied to the photo. (Walt Disney Studios, 1955) Rare original production cels of Lady and Tramp as well as the table, the breadsticks, candle and the plate of spaghetti from the “Bella Notte” sequence of Lady and the Tramp. This particular piece was assembled and released by the studio as a signature piece for the opening of Disneyland in 1955, and specifically for the opening of Disney’s Art Corner; the store in Disneyland that was an outlet for Disney animation art. The original painted background is unique among Art Corner animation art pieces, which have at most, printed backgrounds on thin paper or no background at all. A long-time Disney employee, who later helped open the Art Corner, was given the privilege of purchasing this piece and was the source for this historically important, quite rare, and most iconic Disney image.
