Elaborately Engraved 19th Century Belgian Flintlock Side-by-Side Shotgun, with Finely Carved Stock, #NVSN, approx. .64 cal., 39-3/8" barrels. The first 11.25" up from the breech are deeply relief engraved, ending with tribal masks. Each frizzen, hammer, and lock with considerable coverage in similar floral scroll engraving and are unsigned. Magnificently hand carved stock depicts various scroll work and designs, with a bearded face in the underside of the buttstock. The lifelike representation displays glass eyes and sharp features. Stock also features finely ornate, engraved brass hardware; including a pineapple with finial, scroll and floral themes. There are two blank silver escutcheon plates and side clip fastener. Brass buttplate with scroll work on the tang and light border engraving. Wooden ramrod was painted black. Brass bead front sight is set back 2.25" from the muzzles. Action with double triggers. Mfg'd in the 19th century, likely in Liege, Belgium for export. Shotgun is in fine condition. Metal surfaces are gray, with intermittent spots of mild darkened pitting along the barrel, as well as a few areas of brown patina; typical mild pitting and darkening around the frizzen and hammers. Engraving and wood carvings are crisp. Stock is in fine condition; smooth sections show expected moderate dents and scratches; brass shows light toning from age. Action is tight and functions well. Springfield Armory U.S. Model 1807 Flintlock Carbine (aka Indian Carbine), #NVSN, .54 cal., 33.5" barrel, metal is "in the white", walnut half-stock, small blade front sight, and a "V"-groove cut in the tang for a rear sight. Springfield made 1,202 carbines for gifts to Indians, but only a few hundred were gifted. The remaining carbines were converted to percussion in the mid-1800's and then reconverted back to flint by collectors. Barrel is marked "P (eagle) V", with "US" on top. Wooden ramrod appears to be correct, with the worm on the bottom. Lockplate is marked "U S/(eagle)/SPRINGFIELD", with "1809". The "U S" was partially obliterated during the conversions. Brass furniture was cleaned in the past and now has a nice appearance. Barrel was cleaned to white, leaving scattered spots of patina. Stock is in very good condition, showing moderate wear, but has a 2" crack at the left front. Brass buttplate is dated 1810 on the tang. Flintlock system works properly. Smooth bore shows light rust. Johnson U.S. M1817 Common Flintlock Musket, #NVSN, .54 cal., 36" barrel, brown finish, walnut stock, bead front sight, and fixed "U"-notch rear sight. Barrel is marked "LS/P/US" on top. The touch hole appears original. Lockplate is marked "U.S./(Eagle)/R.& J.D. JOHNSON" with "1825/MIDDn CONN." behind the hammer. Condition is good overall, lockplate is white with some staining. Three barrel bands, trigger guard, and buttplate are dull brown, with light rust. Barrel is a plum colored with some areas of light rust. Stock is in very good condition, with light scattered handling marks, and circled cartouche on the left, with "JJE" stamped behind the trigger plate. Ramrod appears to be new made. Action works properly, but the flint hammer is loose on the tumbler. Bore has seven-groove rifling and is in good condition, with visible light surface rust. Est.: $1,000-$1,600. (Antique)
