#304 Lot 322 Supreme Court: George Sutherland
TLS signed “Geo. Sutherland,” one page, 6 x 8, Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D. C. letterhead, October 20, 1933. In a letter to California governor, Goodwin “Jess” Knight, Judge Sutherland writes, in part: “I should be most glad to write the letter which you request, but our court is constantly called upon to review decisions in which states and state officers are vitally interested, and we have concluded that we cannot with propriety make requests of these officers for appointments, or make endorsements in the nature of requests. I have no doubt of the entire fitness of your son for the appointment, and I entirely agree with what you say in respect of the family stock…I should be glad to do anything I could for you, and I am sure you will understand that I do not withhold the requested letter for any personal reasons. I very much hope your son will succeed.” In fine condition, with light toning, and a light spot of rubbing slightly affecting the first letter of the signature. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
