#355 Lot 379 Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau

French military officer (1725–1807) who made a substantial contribution to the American Revolution, including a leading role in the defeat of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Manuscript DS, signed “de Rochambeau,” one page, 7.75 x 7, March 17, 1760. Document reviewing the military career of Philippe Joseph de Beau and attesting that he has always been an admirable soldier but has been discharged due to his age and wounds. Signed at the conclusion by Rochambeau as Colonel of the Auvergne infantry regiment, and countersigned by three other officers. Several vertical folds, a couple passing through letters of signature, and some scattered light toning and creasing, otherwise fine condition.
