American novelist (1875–1950) best known for his popular series of novels based on feral-child-turned-jungle hero Tarzan. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, February 13, 1939. Letter to an admirer in San Diego. In full: “In reply to your letter of February 9, I am sorry to say that your copy of Tarzan of the Apes is not a first edition copy, but one of the popular reprint editions published by A. L. Burt & Company.” In very good condition, with a few small separations along intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, with a horizontal fold directly under signature, scattered toning, a bit heavier along folds, and small area of paper loss along one fold.
