Handwritten school essay, signed at the top, “Truman Capote,” dated November 11, 1935, on an off-white 8 x 10.5 sheet of lined looseleaf paper. Headed at the top by Capote, “Ennglish [sic], Grade 6th.” Entitled “My School,” the essay reads, in full (with grammar and spelling retained): “The school which I go is Trinity School. The first thing we do in the morning is go to the chapel and have our daily service. In next we have English in which we read stories from our reader or do written work. After that we have history in wich we read of the modern ways of living and olden ways of living and draw graph of steel, coal, and pig iron. Next we have spelling of which we often have a spelling bee. Then next comes they time of joy. Gynaison! in wich we have a simply grand time. After that somes arithmetic, an then comes one of these next, Science, French, writing, Drawing or Manul training. I am in the 6th grade an my five instructors are, Mr Bartram, Mr Langford, Mr Putney, Mr Frlening, an, Mr Simpson.” A uniform shade of mild toning, two binder holes to left edge, two small tears to top border, and some small mounting remnants on reverse, otherwise fine condition. Certainly one of Capote’s earliest ‘works,’ from the 11-year-old author.
