#1002 Lot 1040 Charlie Chaplin

Haunting vintage glossy 8 x 10 United Artists promotional photo for Limelight, signed in fountain pen, “Hello! Charles Chaplin.” In fine condition, with a couple of trivial surface creases and impressions. After Chaplin left for the London premiere of Limelight in 1952, J. Edgar Hoover persuaded the Immigration and Naturalization Services to deny Chaplin’s readmittance to the US under grounds of suspicion for “un-American activities.” Incensed, Chaplin made no attempts to return, disgusted by the accusations and media frenzy created by the FBI and yellow press. He did not return to the states until 1972, when he would receive an Honorary Oscar.
