#1055 Lot 1094 Robert J. Flaherty
Revered as the father of the film documentary (Nanook of the North, 1922). Upon his death, poet E.E. Cummings referred to him as “a god among men,” and Orson Welles put him in the same company as Thoreau and Walt Whitman. ALS signed “Robert Flaherty,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 6.5, December 14, 1949. In a letter from Silvermine, Norwalk Connecticut, Flaherty writes to John Greenough, President of the American Geographic Society, New York, in full: “It is with very great regret that I have to tell you of my inability to carry out the lecture date of Dec. the 23rd. Upon receipt of your first letter asking me to alter the date I went ahead with other arrangements which I am exceedingly sorry to say cannot now will change. I do hope you will not be seriously inconvenienced.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold.
