^#1595 ^Lot 1653 John Buford

Union general (1826–1863). In the Second Bull Run campaign, Buford was so badly wounded that he was reported dead. During the Antietam campaign, he acted as chief of cavalry of the Army of the Potomac under McClellan, and at Fredericksburg under Burnside. On July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, it was Buford's troopers that fired the first shots of the battle. Buford was stricken with typhoid fever during the Rappahannock campaign and died in Washington on December 16, 1863. His commission of major general was presented to him on his deathbed. Scarce wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Superb quality half-view in uniform with rank of brigadier general. Backmark: E. & H.T.
