#1601 Lot 1659 Benjamin Butler
American military officer, lawyer, and politician (1818–1893) whose strict administration of New Orleans following the Union occupation in 1862 made him one of the most controversial figures of the Civil War. His mismanagement as a general ultimately led to his resignation in 1865, which was followed by a long career in Congress. Partly-printed DS, signed “Benj. F. Butler,” one page, 11.5 x 8.5, March 23, 1891. Engraved certificate for three shares of stock in the Georgia-Alabama Investment and Development Co. issued to George W. Patterson, signed at the bottom by Butler as president. Several vertical folds, expected stamps, and mild toning and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
