Once considered the U. S. Army’s greatest “Indian fighter” after successes against the Apache, Crook participated in Grant’s Nov. 3., 1875, “secret meeting” that launched the Great Sioux War. Scarce wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Bust view in uniform with rank of brigadier general. Backmark: Cadwallader & Tappen's Gallery of Art, Front St., over the Bank, Marietta, Ohio. Light toning, surface marks, one of which lightly grazes the facial area, and a pencil notation on the reverse, otherwise fine condition.
