#1699 Lot 1759 Francis J. Herron
Union general (1837–1902). Commanded a militia company known as the "Governor's Grays," whose services he tendered to President elect Abraham Lincoln. For his extraordinary heroism at Pea Ridge, where he was wounded and captured, he was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers. At the close of the war he was appointed to negotiate treaties with the Indians. Rare wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Superb quality seated view in uniform with rank of major general, with his sword propped up against the backside of his chair. Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York, made from a photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. In fine condition, with light toning and rippling.
