#1707 Lot 1767 Adelbert Ames
Union general (1835–1933). Appointed colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry, he led his troops in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. On May 20, 1863, he was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers and later led a brigade in General O.O. Howard's 11th Corps at Gettysburg. Ames was the last survivor of the full rank generals on either side in the Civil War. Wet plate, albumen 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo, featuring a half-view of Ames in uniform with rank of brigadier general, signed on the reverse over a small affixed strip, “Brig. Genl. Ames.” Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York, from a photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery. In fine condition, with some light staining to the bottom of the mount.
