Confederate general (1833–1903). Promoted to brigadier general on Nov. 29, 1862, he fought at the battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, in 1863 at Marye's Heights during the Chancellorsville campaign, was a brigade commander during the Gettysburg campaign.
