Lot 537 Pre-War Sauer & Sohn Drilling

This is the oldest firearms manufacturing firm in Germany. Founded in 1751 in Suhl, the company has produced high quality handguns and long guns. This drilling features a front bead tipped blade sight and hinged rear sight on the matte rib marked "C. TURATH, HOFBUCHSENMACHER, DESSAU". Dolls head extension. Each barrel is marked "FLUSS-STAHL" and "J.P.SAUER & SOHN, SUHL". 16 gauge shotgun and 9.3x72R mm rifle, 2-1/2 inch chambers, choked extra full/modified, with an extractor. There is a sling swivel mounted on the lower barrel. The casehardened action has semi relief floral and game scene engraving. The locks have the same engraving design with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN. SUHL." marked on each side running in a downward arch behind the hammers. Double triggers (forward trigger adjustable), tang mounted barrel selector and under break lever mounted ahead of the trigger guard. Mounted with a checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a metal grip cap, cheekpiece, 4 bullet compartment with engraved lid, serrated horn buttplate and sling swivel. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches.

Condition: Very good as the barrels retain traces of mostly a smooth refurbished brown patina on the balance. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished and remains very good with a few minor dings and crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. Mechanically fine.
