Lot 1322 U.S. Department of Indian Affairs Marked Winchester-Hotchkiss Bolt Action Saddle Ring Carbine
Manufactured circa 1882-83. Although in the serial number range of the Second Model, this carbine has the First Model features of a 24 inch barrel, forearm without the iron forend cap, no cleaning rod provisions and has the safety, saddle ring on the left side of the stock and magazine cut-off device on the right side of the stock ahead of the wrist. The left side of the receiver wall has the three line address/patent dates, the left rear of the barrel is marked "CO D" and the stock is stamped "USDIA" (United States Department of Indian Affairs). Blade front sight on a square base and adjustable "ski slope" rear sight. Mounted with a smooth half stock with a carbine buttplate. The top of the stock is stamped "10" just ahead of the buttplate tang.

Condition: Very good. The rifle retains traces of original blue finish mixed with a crisp smooth brown patina. The stock is also very good with a hairline crack extending from the saddle ring base forward an inch and back to the receiver tang and the same on the right side at the safety/cut-off. There are a few overall scattered minor dings and dents present on the remainder of wood. All markings are clear and crisp. The action is excellent.
