Lot 3131 Civil War U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Type I Percussion Rifle-Musket with Bayonet

This is an example of a Type I Model 1863 Rifle-Musket with barrel bands secured with a screw and three leaf rear sight. The rear of the lock plate is correctly dated "1863" with an "eagle/shield" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" stamped ahead of the hammer. An additional "eagle/shield" is stamped on the bolster. Barrel is also dated 1863 and has "V/P/eagle head" proofs (double stamped). Full length stock stamped "W.M. WEIGLE" along with two cartouches on the left flat and fitted with "US" marked buttplate. Comes with a leather sling and "US/CF" marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Fine. The rifle-musket shows a bright appearance that is beginning to age. The stock is very fine with a number of minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
