Lot 3445 General Ulysses S. Grant Bronze by Frederick Volck
Volck executed of Grant in the same imagery of General Lee which he had done previously in 1863. This bronze was done in 1869 when then President Grant took office. Lee, the State of Virginia, or Volck were grateful on how General Lee was treated by General Grant at Appomattox when General Lee and his soldiers signed a peace treaty with the USA. It is recorded in Grant's diary of the visit with Lee to the President's office in Washington, DC. where this sculpture was presented to President Grant. Measures 20 inches tall x 11 inches wide x 11 inches deep and weighs 50 pounds. The bronze is signed & dated on the backside by Frederick Volck, 1869, Richmond. VA. The bronze has been restored to its original condition. (German-Conf. Am. 1833-1891)
