"Applications for Military Appointments under the Permanent Government of the Confederate States of America February 22nd 1862 Richmond Virginia" Important Confederate Military Appointment Archives detailing every Confederate officer recommended for appointment or promotion from February 1862 to June 30th 1863. Inside cover of the book is inscribed in pencil "Left at Greensborough N.C. by Jefferson Davis on his way South from Richmond Va. after the surrender of Lee & Johnson. The R.R. being out, he was obliged to leave the archives at Greensborough." The ledger details each person recommended for appointment or promotion, who recommended them & their state. This important archive would have been Top Secret in its day. Includes many famous Confederates Including Nathan Bedford Forrest's promotion from Colonel to Brigadier General. Fitzhugh Lee (Robert E Lee's nephew & recommended for promotion by JEB Stuart) & many others. Recommendations from Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson, JEB Stuart & others. Famous Texans include Sul Ross who led a group of Texas Rangers in The Battle of Pease River where Cynthia Parker was rescued from Comanche Indians in 1860, He would later go on to be Governor of Texas & President of Texas A & M University. Texas Ranger John S. Ford, O.M. Roberts & others. This important archives details the appointment & promotion structure of the Confederacy during the early years of the Civil War. Book retains original tag on inside cover marked "James Woodhouse & Co. Wholesale Retailers in Books, Stationary. Piano Fortes, & Music. No. 139 Main Street, Richmond, Va." 1248 entries. 478 pages (with pages 363-474 missing from the back). Measures 12" x 17-1/2".

Provenance: Comes with a September 23, 1931 Marlin Texas newspaper article about the book. In the article, it describes how the book was given to Mrs. E.C. Smith of Marlin Texas in 1930 by James Fry who's relative, Samuel Cordell Fry of Crawford County Ohio, had acquired & preserved the book at the end of the Civil War. Article details a tobacco leaf that was pressed into the book that is still present.
