Original black cloth gilt, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, boards with borders in blind, upper board with central gilt design, top edge gilt, others uncut.Anna Livia Plurabelle. Preface by Padraic Colum. First edition, limited to 50 copies of which this is 6, on light green paper. Slocum and Cahoon note that: "Of these 50 copies [on light green paper] probably 6 were offered for sale by the publisher. These were numbered 1 to 6, with the following notice on p.[iv] in the handwriting of Crosby Gaige: This is one of 6 copies on green paper. Crosby Gaige.' 'The remaining 44 copies were presumably given away by Crosby Gaige, with the exception of a few which were remaindered to the Chaucer Head Book Shop, New York, in 1938 by Random House.’ However, this copy is simply numbered '6', and does not bear the publisher's statement on the limitation page. Very few of the 50 copies were numbered, and none were signed by Joyce. The precise reason Gaige printed a small edition on green paper is unknown. A clear possibility is that he offered the green paper copies as a limited edition to be sold at an inflated price. Joyce would be unaware of the edition as he was not asked to sign them and Gaige could retain all the proceeds for himself. Rare, only one copy is recorded at auction by ABPC since 1975. This fragment forms pages 532-554 of Finnegans Wake.
