Lot 396 ABBASID: al-Hadi, 785-786, AR dirham (2.83g), Qasr al-Salam, AH169

ABBASID: al-Hadi, 785-786, AR dirham (2.83g), Qasr al-Salam, AH169, A-217.2, some very light porosity, otherwise lovely, bold Very Fine, RRR, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. Qasr al-Salam was a temporary location of the Baghdad mint under al-Mahdi, AH167-169, brought back to Madinat al-Salam before the death of al-Mahdi in AH169. Some dirhams of al-Mahdi dated 169 exist. His successor, al-Hadi, struck dirhams at Madinat al-Salam 169-170, probably never at Qasr al-Salam. This coin was probably struck at Madinat al-Salam, but with an obsolete obverse die left over from Qasr al-Salam. Or perhaps the engraver goofed, and cut Qasr instead of Madina. Typos happen!
