Lot 506 Rare and desirable American spearpoint Bowie knife marked "Chevalier's California Knife JD Chevali

Rare and desirable American spearpoint Bowie knife marked "Chevalier's California Knife JD Chevalier, New York". The knife measures 11-1/2" overall with 7-3/4" blade, the blade is in good condition showing some normal use, minor sharpening and slight reshaping to the point. The second two lines of the marking are light at the ends but visible. The knife is gripped in select hardwood, probably rosewood. The pommel nut is brass and showsa good patina, and this is a good looking original 19th century Chevalier with the highly desirable California mark. Note: If this grip is changed it was done by a knife maker in the 19th century and this catalogerbelieves that the grip is original; however several Bowie knife collectors have dissented, stating that it is a period change at time of knife's use.
