Original oil painting on board signed lower left WHD Koerner. 28”x40”, illustrated for Saturday Evening Post, February 20th, 1926. For a story entitled “No Thoroughfare”. Caption in article reads “Go Away – Don’tcome any nearer”. The artwork shows a lady armed with a double-barrel shotgun holding an intruder at bay in a western fire-light scene. WHD Koerner was one of the master illustrators of America’s wild west alongwith Remington, Russell, Goodwin, and Dunn. He studied under George Ridgeman, Norman Rockwell’s teacher. He also studied with Howard Pyle. Koerner’s work shared techniques and styles in the company of N. C. Wyeth,Dunn, Schoonover, etc. He worked for the most prominent magazines of the era illustrating over 600 pictures. He was a prolific illustrator for Zane Gray and others prominent authors. He traveled to Montana inthe 1920’s and was forever impressed by the West. Maxfield Parish is also listed as an influence on this noted artist. Provenance. Fenn Galleries, Santa Fe. Approx. 1982.
