High art French double barrel under-hammer shotgun by Gossett of Paris, circa about 1830-1840,in fine to excellent original condition. The gun is approximately 16 gauge smooth bore, 28" barrels, 44" overall, andweighs approximately 7 lbs. The gun shows dual under-hammers, which this French inventor was known for. Gossett was a top maker who worked for a time at the Versailles Arsenal under the direction of Boutet. The gun shows a full signature in fancy gold letters, "Invention Gossett" in a round cartouche, and "a Paris" in matching fancy script letters. The breech and muzzle show gold lines and border decorations. The tangand action are finely engraved, show portrait of stag, wreaths and arrows. The bottom of the frame in front of the hammers is foliate engraved with a large center showing gold initials "A B". The trigger guard is nicelyengraved with portrait of a flamingo, the tang shows Gossett, Brevette . The stock is fine quality burl walnut, and is magnificently carved with the face of Baccus surrounded by florals and grapes. The wrist
