Lot 91 1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5 MS64
1856 N-1 R1 Italic 5 MS64. Lustrous bright mint red fading to light steel brown on the devices, nearly three-fourths of the original red remaining, mostly on the reverse. An eye-catching cent with just a few minor defects. These include a small diagonal nick on the cheek right of the upper lip, a couple microscopic ticks on the throat, and traces of an old fingerprint at star 10. Otherwise this cent is a gem. E-MDS, die state a late. The die lines over UN are weak but remain partially visible and the fields are beginning to display radial die flowlines. In addition there is a very shallow low spot (caused by debris, especially grease, on the die) at NT in CENT reaching up to the E in ONE. Tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
