Lot 144 Martin Van Buren

ALS signed “M. Van Buren,” one page both sides, 5 x 7.75, July 11, 1838. Letter of introduction to Mr. Poinsett. In full: “The bearer of this Mr. Luce a son of Dr Luce of the War Department has asked me to introduce him to you. Mr. Luce belongs to a highly respectable family in N York, & is I believe a young gentleman of much personal worth.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light brushes to a couple words of text. Joel Poinsett served as the Secretary of War under President Van Buren. His name was also given to the Christmas flower Poinsettia.
