Lot 1572 Auto Racing: Pikes Peak

Also known as the Race to the Clouds, this race is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, a distance of 12.42 mi over 156 turns, climbing 4721 feet. Collection of seven Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb Association Inc. checks, each measuring 8.25 x 3, all dated July 4, 1962, filled out and signed in an unknown hand, and each endorsed on the reverse by the check’s recipient, with a notation on the front for the respective payment. Checks are payable to, and endorsed on the reverse by: Curtis Turner ($100 for New Record Stock), Curtis Turner ($1500 for First Place Stock), Nick Sanborn, Jr. ($1000 for Second Place Stock), Bobby Unser ($2500 1st Place Championship), Akton Miller ($500 1st Place 2001 C.C. & Over Sports), Robert Donner, Jr. ($500 1st Place 0–2000 C.C. Sports), and Parnell Jones ($500 Third Place Stock). Each check is encapsulated in an individual plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder. Vertical folds to a couple of checks, a bank stamp to the body of each, a few pencil or ink notations, otherwise fine condition.
