^Lot 289 Two Sets of Miners' Scales

Lot of two scales. One is in an orange, oval metal box, measuring 6 1/8" x 3 1/2", with an eagle and decorative border on lid top. Beam measures 5 7/8" long with 2 3/8" pans; except for the 6 DWTS and 4 DWTS, the rest of the weights are missing. Box interior has darkened and shows considerable wear. The other is in an oval, red metal box w/gilt "Miners' Improved Gold Scale / manufactured expressly for California" and eagle design on lid. 2 5/8" pans are suspended by chain from a 7 1/4" beam. Includes several wafers but no larger weights. Gilt printing on top mostly worn away; box shows considerable paint loss. [GS-45, GS-38]
