Lot 185 The Warner & Swasey Company Proof.

Cleveland, OH. 1890-1910. Proof. Odd shs, Preferred shares, brown. Vignette of 36 inch Lick Telescope. The company was founded by Worcester Reed Warner and Ambrose Swasey in 1880 to manufacture high-grade special machinery and machine tools. They set new standards for the manufacture of astronomical telescopes and other observatory equipment. They constructed, among others, the telescope for the Lick Observatory (1883). Kenwood Observatory, the U.S. Naval Observatory (1893), Yerkes Observatory (1897), Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Canada (1916), Argentina National Observatory (1926) and the Case Institute Observatory (1941). The Warner & Swasey Company continued until 1980, when it was acquired by Bendix Corporation. Rare telescope designer and manufacturers. Only example found in archives and possibly the only stock certificate to have a telescope of it. SBNC. VG with handling, archival production notations and bends and folds.
