Lot 617 Standard Oil Company Specimen,
NJ. 1960. Specimen. Odd shs, purple. Vignette of oil well with 2 allegorial men. Facsimile signature of Monroe J. Rathbone, as CEO of Standard Oil of New Jersey from 1960 to 1965. Rathbone is credited for making Jersey Standard into an international company. Seeing problems with an ever increasing dependence on oil from the Middle East, Rathbone had the foresight to push his company to search for alternative oil resources years before the first oil embargo. In 1882, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey ("Standard") was formed to take advantage of New Jersey laws that allowed corporations to own stock in other corporations. In 1892, due to court action by the State of Ohio, the Standard Oil Trust officially dissolved. Jersey Standard becomes the controlling organization for Standard. ABNC. XF.
