Lot 87 James Monroe
Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 13 x 8, December 18, 1817. President Monroe appoints Gilbert Gardner “a Sailing Master in the Navy of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Monroe and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Benjamin W. Crowninshield. Suede matted and framed with a portrait and a biographical plaque to an overall size of 22 x 24. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, written portions of the document light, but mostly legible, pencil notation under Crowninshield’s signature, paper loss to top right and scattered toning, otherwise very good condition. Oversized.
