Lot 131 William H. Taft

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 9.25, personal letterhead, May 21, 1917. Letter to a woman in Maine. In part: “I enjoyed my visit to your town and to Aroostook very much indeed…Please present my warm regards and grateful acknowledgements to Mr. Powers and say to him I hope that Nick Fessenden is still flourishing like the Green Bay Tree.” In fine condition, with scattered light toning and creasing. Fessenden was the former Secretary of State of Maine. Taft’s mention of a “Green Bay Tree,” is a derogatory term meaning to develop vigorously in a congenial environment, whether or not this is deserved. It is originally derived from Psalm 37:35, which reads ‘I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.’ An uncommon glimpse into Taft’s personality.
