Lot 1496 Tommie Smith
As the national anthem played during their medal ceremony after the 200 meter dash in Mexico City in 1968, Smith and John Carlos raised clenched fists above their heads in support of the Black Power movement and to protest racism in the United States. They were suspended from the Games and expelled from the Olympic Village. Color 20 x 24 poster, signed in gold ink, “Tommie Smith 1968.” Rolled and in fine condition, with a few scattered light creases
