Lot 171 A Binji Wood Carved Pipe Bowl
East of the Kuba, Zaire, late 20th century. Prestige pipe used by individuals of high rank, well carved of wood in form of a head of bold geometric form. The head bears expansive forehead with extended horizontal plane behind, high relief nose and mouth, jutting nodes at ear area and surface of head covered with traditional incised geometric patterns. Above hollowed cylinder is lined with white metal sheet and covered with resinous remains of soot and tobacco. Long tubular pipe extended behind for attachment to a longer pipe now gone. Medium to deep brown well-used patina. 3-5/8”H x 3-3/4”L, age crack along side, repair on stem. Custom base.
