^Lot 186 Mexican Ex-Voto “Girl washed away by river” 1881

Mexico, dated 1881. Oil on tin. A dramatic and early ex-voto, wonderfully detailed. Tells the story of A. Figueroa, who fell into the river and was carried by the current but was saved with the help of Saint Anthony. Dated 1881, this is an early ex-voto by a painter whose works we’ve seen dated into the early 20th century. One feature of this painter was the distinctive flourish he used at the bottom ofthe inscriptions. Painted on a recycled metal can with “Devoe • Patents June 28..” stamped in the metal. 7-3/4” x 10-1/2”
