Lot 590 Cels of Pinocchio, Geppetto and Figaro with the key watercolor production background from Pinocchio
(Walt Disney Studios, 1940) Original production cels of Pinocchio, Geppetto and Figaro paired with the matching watercolor production background from Pinocchio. The cels were trimmed to image at the studio and placed on the matching production background for presentation. The scene of Geppetto saying goodnight to his wooden puppet is an iconic image from the film. Considered one of the finest feature-length animated films ever made, Pinocchio was heavily influenced by the art of Gustaf Tenggren and used rich detailed watercolor backgrounds by masterful artists such as Claude Coats. The best of these backgrounds were the ones that depicted the interior of Geppetto’s cottage. The entire piece measures 12 ½ in. x 12 ½ in. The total image size of the characters is 7 in. x 8 in. (not counting Pinocchio’s strings).
