Lot 460376 General William T. Sherman Civil War Letter w/COA 1870
This is an original hand written letter from General William T. Sherman. This letter is a response to a letter from his mother's grandfather, with whom he was friendly. The man, George Devere, was to play a soldier in an upcoming play, and wrote to the general about borrowing a uniform. * The letter and a printed transcript are shown here. * The stationery contains an official military embossing at the upper left corner, and a stamp. It is hand dated Jan. 8, 1870. The paper is 5 x 8 inches folded. The back quarter has pencil writing, and shows stains on the back side. The envelope has some wear and tears. * A certificate of authenticity is included. * General Sherman was known for being one of the toughest leaders of the Union Army, and this rare letter reveals the general's more kind and generous side.
